I love it. Lahi creates one of his usual "controversial topic" threads hoping to spark a heated debate that goes along racial and ethnic lines and it backfires like an old car.

Would someone at least want to try and play the Devil's Advocate?

I wasn't trolling. It sucks everyone agrees, but I wasn't trying to get people mad at each other or anything.

There's a difference between trying to start a fight/drama, and trying to start a debate. Starting a debate is fine. Usually it leads to more knowledge being presented. If you're posting something just to get people riled up and hope that two or more people are going to be at each others necks, then that's another issue.

Normally I'd be happy to, but I can't imagine any line of argument that isn't just plain boneheaded in my point of view.

Well I for one absolutely detest English and it is a crime against humanity that ANYONE in this country uses it, let alone the whole world. God bless those kind enough to speak their foreign tongue to brighten up the unjust hellhole that is the English language.

That is, if one would refer to playing the Devil's Advocate as trolling..

If that was playing Devil's Advocate, Satan needs a new legal team.

The only thing against learning other langauges I could think of is that it's bothersome. It would be a lot easier if everybody spoke the same langauge. If that was English, Chinese, Esperanto or some langauge never heard of, I don't really care, as long as everybody learned the langauge natively. People could still learn any langauge they wanted, as long as they learned the trade langauge first. I suppose a lot of culture might still be lost that way, but I think it would be worth it if it meant anybody could understand anybody.

But then again, this isn't really what this topic was about...

I agree wholeheartedly with what everyone has said so I'm not gonna say anything new. :/ It really bugs me when I go to Fresh Choice and the people behind the counter don't know what an effing POTATO is.

...This thread would be kinda fun if Rosalie was here...

"ENGLISH IS THE LANGUAGE OF THE WHITE CHRISTIAN MALE OPPRESSORS! SEMPER UBI SUB UBI!"

Somehow I don't think it would tell us to always wear our underwear.

I call Rosalie an "it" because I couldn't tell if it was male or female. In the one pic it posted, Rosalie was dressed like a woman complete with make-up, but had one helluva case of man face.

Somebody just needs to invent the Babel Fish already. Resurrect Douglas Adams if you have to. That's a handy little organism there that really needs to be somehow created.

It's probably the only Latin it knows, despite not technically being real Latin.

Thank you for stating the incredibly obvious, COLA. The merely obvious would have sufficed in this case.

Boring topic is boring. I shall dissagree to make it not suck.

Listen, it's annoying when people don't speak your language, but they shouldn't have to. That's like asking them to give up a part of their heritage. What, "since we let you into our country, you must be like us"? That's retarded. :] And if they aren't going to be communicating with English-speaking people all day (like in a retail job or something) I don't see why it would be necessary. It's not their job to make friends or talk to people, they're just there to make a living. :/ I think they should be allowed to do that without having to learn our language.

WORST ARGUMENT EVER, RIP IT TO SHREDS.
P.S. I am actually just as lame as all of you and I agree.

Answering this is gonna make me feel like I'm arguing with nothing, which is an awkward and kinda depressing feeling, so I'm gonna make this short.

Cool, you don't have to learn English. But if you don't, don't expect other people to learn your language. This is an English country, so people are gonna speak English. There's no obligation to accommodate anyone who doesn't.

Its funny you point that out instead of the suggestion of HAVING HER KILL HERSELF

Merely to provide a slightly different take, and in no way endorsing any views which may be found therein, I direct you here.

It's a good point, but you also have to take into account the realities, which is that almost everyone here speaks English, so people need to learn it just to interact with those around them.

A law which requires one to speak only English seems wholly unnecessary. Why would we need that law?

I don't think anybody's proposing a law to ban the use of other languages. What's being proposed is to require immigrants to learn English. They can continue speaking their native language, but they must be able to communicate with others as well, and for that, they need English.
