I recently got a CD from a friend of mine by TMBG. It had a song on it called Kiss Me Son of God. Here were some of the lyrics

I built a little empire out of some crazy garbage
Called the blood of the exploited working class
But they've overcome their shyness
Now their calling me "Your highness"
And the world screams
"Kiss me son of god!"

Remind you of any president?

Good lord.

Okay, "Kiss Me, Son of God" is a great song with some great lyrics, but I have a hard time believing that it, having been released in 1988, is about Emper-- er, President Bush, or somehow prophesied his reign-- er, reign.

The song could be taken as a reference to any number of megalomaniacal leaders throughout history (one of the folks at TMBW suspects Alexander the Great, though he lived before Jesus), and knowing TMBG is probably someone far more mundane, like the CEO of Nike (to use a contemporary example) or, if you're into Disney musicals, Pulitzer and Hurst. The tone of the song (and the line "I've built a little empire") has always suggested to me that the "and the world screams, 'Kiss me, son of God!' " line is really just the narrator's ego talking; that in fact the whole world doesn't worship him, but rather that, though he is very wealthy and powerful, he has somewhat of a Messiah complex.

At any rate, comparing this song to George W. Bush seems a little like flamebait to me.

Well, I never said it was meant to be about him. I said it reminded me about him. Not to be rude, but there is a difference IJ.

Uh... actually you didn't say it reminded you about him either. You asked all of us if the person described in the lyrics you provided reminded us of any president:

There is a difference.

InterruptorJones simply answered the question that you asked.

I love that song. It's a superb track on Lincoln and has the greatest piano/violin melody I've ever heard.

Considering that many of the kings and emperors in coutries that historically had kings and emperors sought to be worshipped as gods -- e.g. Rome, Japan, China, Egypt -- it's a song that could be taken a thousand different ways. To interpret it meaningfully, it's important to know how the author(s) meant it.

On a related note, please don't seriously group any representative democracy's temporary leader, no matter how meglomaniacal you think he is, with actual, historical dictators. The worst president we've ever had is better than most dictators, and to deny that is to trivialize the plight of billions of people worldwide who still live in relative slavery.
