Full story.

Basically, a family thought (incorrectly, as far as I know) that a neighborhood girl was saying bad things about their son (as I recall--I could be wrong about that part), and created a fake MySpace profile. The girl, who already suffered from clinical depression, befriended "Josh", but eventually he started treating her improperly, saying some rather cruel things about her (including calling her fat and a slut), and saying he didn't want to be her friend anymore.

The girl, crushed, then killed herself.

Personally, I think the family that created the profile should be prosecuted for what they did. Your thoughts?

I remember hearing something about that. It's horrible. I believe that they'll get something along the lines of manslaughter or wrongful death. At the very least, a huge lawsuit and the fact they they were the cause of this young girls death will haunt them for the rest of their lives.

Someone using Josh's account was sending cruel messages. Then, Megan called her mother, saying electronic bulletins were being posted about her, saying things like, "Megan Meier is a slut. Megan Meier is fat."

Megan's mother, who monitored her daughter's online communications, returned home and said she was shocked at the vulgar language her own daughter was sending. She told her daughter how upset she was about it.

"Oh, your friend is attacking you and ruining your reputation, honey? WELL TOO BAD I DON'T CARE STOP SWEARING"

But in all honesty, you have to be completely sick to be a grown person and hurt a high school girl who has past suicide attempts. How can you do that?

While that's unfortunate, unless I'm mistaken there's nothing illegal about creating a fake MySpace page, whatever the end result or implications may be.

Well, there's nothing illegal about driving a vehicle either, but if you hit someone...

What they did was very cruel, and they ought in some way be held accountable for it. At the very least, it shows that these "adults" have some growing up of their own to do.

That's actually the proper way to say that. The past tense of hang is hanged.

Oh yeah. I'm sure that's wrong in some context, though. You don't say "I hanged that poster on the wall"

They only say "hanged" in reference to the method of death.

As for the topic at hand. I don't think they will be brought up on criminal charge. If they do, it will most likely be Involuntary Manslaughter but I can guarantee that there will be a Wrongful Death Suit.

Proving a criminal case is going to be tough.

The lawsuit, though, is guaranteed. I have some other punishments in mind, but none of them are forum safe. Not remotely close.

Old News is OLLLLD! Knew about this since 2006.

None the less, just goes to show that MySpace is Serious Business.

Jebus(?), adults can be unnecessarily cruel to kid/teens. They will definitely have that lawsuit.

I heard about this. Made me angry. Once they found out that she wasn't saying bad things about their daughter, why did they go on with it, and bully her?

According to another news story I read on this, the last message she received was
Quote:
Everybody in O'Fallon knows how you are. You are a bad person and everybody hates you. Have a [rule 6]y rest of your life. The world would be a better place without you.

I don't know what to day about that.

Bullying is bullying. What does the medium matter? I remember when the internet was my escape from real life and people I respected repeatedly told me what a horrible person I was. I can't imagine what it would be like to have someone you trust do that to you in the same situation.

Also, she was thirteen, and you can have some weird priorities at that age.

Thats why I learned at a very young age to never trust any other adult other than your parents, and most immediate family members.

None the less, butthurt butthurt, drama, butthurt.

An adult who doesn't want their kid to be treated like they were in school, so they help their kid take out the other kid in a way that they wish they could have done to their bullies.

Except this time someone died.

I got a comment similar to that (though far longer) from Jello on my LJ once, and it depressed the crap outta me. I can only imagine what it would do to someone who was already suffering from depression.

What kind of adult insults a 13-year-old, period?

Far too many people over the age of 20-whatever have failed to grow up. They think they're still 16 and in high school.

This trend is growing and it concerns me.

Well, the reassurance from you and my other friends helped a lot. Y'know, that I wasn't a worthless drain on society who did nothing important.

It's almost as if the subtext to this whole issue is that things turn fatal when parents take a hand in their childrens' social lives.

We're all worthless drains on society who do nothing, its those who say "You know what, Screw this way of life" and does something about it that isn't.
