Hi Everyone,

My new years resolution this year is to slim down a bit and I was wanting the opinion of others on this topic.
Do you think the size of a person (weight) is to do with their behaviour towards food and exercise or their genetics?

Thanks,

Jack

It's obviously both. There are genes which cause more body fat to be stored, and there are genes which limit the control of the desire to eat. But getting to be 300 pounds and calling it genetics is ridiculous. No matter what, if you burn more calories than you consume, you will lose weight.

I think it's mostly genetics, though.

The way some people's bodies are set up, it can be impossible for them to get fat/thin.

Both.

There are some people who are genetically bound to not be a size 2, but I don't think that anyone's genetics sets them up to be morbidly obese.

As was said earlier, more calories burned than eaten = weight loss, more calories in than burned = weight gain.

A person's genetics can control how many calories they burn, though. Some people do have very high metabolism and can eat more than the people who have a slower metabolic rate. Of course, there are ways to vary that, too. Active people have higher metabolic rates than non-active people. This even carries over to when people aren't exercising.

It has already been mentioned, but it is a little of both. Genetics can play a role in the background of your weight, but it mainly has to do with your metabolism, especially if you're of the younger age groups (child - early adult). Exercising by doing aerobic exercises (jogging, jumping, randomly running into things, etc.) is the best way to build up your metabolism, especially if you pair it with a healthy diet and limit down on your calorie, carbohydrate, sugar, and saturated fat intake. However, there is a delicate balance, and if you eat too little, I believe your body will start to store more things as fat.

I'm no diet expert, but ever since I stopped consuming chocolate regularly, started eating snacks such as cereal more, and joined lacrosse, I feel more healthy overall. Weight loss takes a long time though, and your weight may actually start to go up as you develop more muscle.

I voted behavior, but it's both. I just think it's more behavior.

I think that by and large it's your own personal behavior that influences this, with a small amount of genetics thrown in there to decide what you're predisposed to.

The cruelty of fate.

No, but really. Genetics determine what weight you'll PROBABLY have, but you can be skinny or fat or muscular or anything you want to be if you have the resources and you really put your mind to it.

Unless you're big boned.

Big boned? Oh yeah, like people have massive bones hanging over their belts and sticking out of the seats in their pants. ;)

Fat is fat. Some people are born with genetics that make them overweight, while others may have great genetics yet live an unhealthy lifestyle.

Exactly... "Big boned" is a horrible excuse for being overweight.
I'm not saying that people don't have different bone structures, but someone 30 pounds overweight cannot blame that on their bones.

You can blame your bones for keeping you from being a size 4 or 6, however.

I agree with the consensus that it's not one single factor of these two, but a combination of both, that determines weight. That said, it seems to me that anyone should be able to attain a healthy weight for the body type their genetic code gave them by eating right and staying reasonably active. At the same time, it seems to me that the genetic code (and possibly bad health habits?) might make it more difficult for a person to achieve that healthy weight.

This is a bit unclear, or we need a both option and neither option. But I was born 11 pounds. I'm still big. But it wasn't even genetic. (I've got a pretty healthy family). Or a choice behavior. So, neither I guess.

Why is that not genetic?

I'd say both.
I know people who eats really badly and do no exercise, but are really thin because of their fast metabolism.
But I think is had more to do with behaviour.

Well. I mean, there are a lot of people who are big, as in, have big frames, and might look fat, but actually will be underweight if they lose weight. It's just like, you have to know what your healthy weight is.

What am I saying? I dunno.

I feel while even though genetics can affect it, it doesn't determine it.
