That's always been in the back of my head.

I doubt it... it was only considered wrong for certain people called 'Nazarenes' or something, like Samson.

When you're a preacher who's off the wagon, you'll go just about anywhere.

You sound like a Baptist, man (I was raised Baptist, we know our own). You're showing a real misunderstanding of Didymus and alcohol. He drinks alcohol, but he's not a drunk. He has a drink or two a week, but he's not a drunk.

Actually, I wouldn't. I'd prefer nobody would go to hell.
I'll leave the whole "excluding people from Heaven" thing to Westboro Baptist.

Oh okay, I think I see where you're going with this. Obscene, meaning actually doing obscene stuff with all of your riches.

Okay then, what about Bill Gates? He doesn't really help anyone, but he doesn't blow his money either. Its not obscene how rich he is, he worked for it, and he doesn't blow it or show it all off. What I'm saying is, he's rich, he doesn't really give it to a whole lot of charity, but he doesn't go around flashing it either. Where does he stand?

Yeah, when your Regional Assistant of Yellow Light Shipping Direction Supervisor is rolling in dough, that's pretty uncalled for. He's not helping anyone except those who ship yellow lights, yet he's blowing money on popsicles and used athletic cups.
That's obscene, wouldn't you think?

That, and when he dies, 90% of his total net worth is going to be divided evenly amongst several charities, leaving only 10% to his wife, children, and family.

Not as much as 9 times that, though. I mean, that's still ridiculously generous. If you're rich, you want to leave your family with a fairly large sum of money, right? He could be donating a whole lot less and no one would question him on it ('cause even something like 20% is still very generous)

I'm not sure if you were exaggerating or not, but 1% of his worth is literally more like... 580 million.

Wikipedia says his current net worth is $58 billion, so yeah, 1% would be $580 million.

Taking drugs is now a sin?

How strict is their definition of 'drug'? Just narcotics? Or does that include, like, medicine? I don't want to go to hell for having a headache.

THOU HAST TAKEN TWO ASPIRIN! YOU ARE NOW CONDEMNED TO THE FIRES OF HELL FOREVER!

Even if they meant Aspirin, I wouldn't worry about it. The Catholics seem to like to make up restrictions. Apparently, you're supposed to feel guilty about your religion or something like that.

Yes, I realize this is highly offensive, but it seems like that's what they're doing.
Thank God I'm protestant.

I'm Catholic, and I believe in the sacraments, praying to the saints, all of that.

but this is just retarded. Sure, the catholic church has been talking about abortion for a while now. But some of the others just make NO SENSE, WHATSOEVER. they can't decide why someone would go to hell, that's up to God.

I always wondered what God thinks of the Catholic Church.
The selling of indulgences.
The baptisms that were not allowed.
The mixing up of religion and state.
I imagine he is not too pleased.

Post subject:  Re: The 7 Deadly Social Sins

I don't think they sell indulgences anymore. If they do, they are good about not abusing them like they used to, but I'm pretty sure indulgences are earned through good works and prayers.
I'm not sure what baptisms you were talking about, but I know the Catholic Church doesn't preach the mixing of religion and state. Jesus actually did seem to say that God and government were different things, but I don't think God would really care if they wanted to start a theocracy or something somewhere. But I know Catholics tend to be liberal-leaning when it comes to politics (at least, for sure compared to protestants), and they definitely don't preach mixing church and state where it shouldn't be.

(I've always thought it was weird that so many liberals were Catholic... it seems like Catholicism is the most 'conservative' denomination of Christianity, but maybe not)

I don't know about your beliefs, but I've always thought that "indulgences" had no purpose. We are saved and forgiven by grace and grace alone. If Christ's death was not enough to save us, then there was no point in Him coming down here and going through that.

Matthew 22:21 ("Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's") is what you're talking about, I think. Of course, it's possible that I'm taking this out of context. He was talking about giving tribute to the State (paying taxes).
Once again, I wish Didymus was here.

Yeah, that's exactly what I believe too. I do think it's great that the Catholics do so many good works, but I think it's for the wrong reason.
