My school's GSA did this, and IMHO, it's not necessarily the individual GLBT people doing it, it's the whole group participating that makes a difference. In the group at my school, they gave everyone a piece of paper with a paragraph explanation of the event if they were doing it, so that they didn't just not say anything if someone addressed them.

And a day of silence is powerful because it recognizes that a group is currently being silenced by an over the top gesture. That's the overarching philosophy behind it.

TL;DR: Day of silence is not a bad thing.

Edit: HOLY CRAP TOTPD!! :eekdance: :eekdance: :eekdance: :eekdance: :eekdance:

more like "hay, we can't respond to your attaks on a daily basis, so we're using a hyperbolic gesture to get your attention."

More like "hay, we can't respond to your attacks, and by not saying anything for a whole day to anyone, you can come and continue to beat me up and kick my butt and I can't do or say anything about it"

Ok, this has gone on long enough.
Break it up, fellas. Move along. Paint some more toast or something.
