So, Day of Silence 2008.

I support the cause 100 percent. However, I don't think that keeping your mouth shut all day, instead of saying anything about what you think, is an effective method of getting a point across.

Not gonna do it. I support the cause and all, gay bashing (literal and figurative) is a bad thing, but I don't see how people just being quiet will help. How can they get their point across without speaking?

"Why are you being so quiet today, Waldo?"

"..."

"Waldo?"

"..."

"Waldo, answer me, you jerk!"

"..."

"RAAAAAAARGH! WALDO!!!"

Hee hee. It's true. I think students do it just to get out of class participation. I prefer parades, ralleys, and protests myself...

That's what I'm saying. Organize a protest if you've got something to say. And if you organized an event where all eyes were on you, I think that being silent would be pretty effective.

So am I not supposed to talk or something? Is that it?

edit: Oops, it's April 25th and I talked quite a bit. But I did lecture an idiot on calling somebody a gay cigarette, do I get points?

Yup yup! You're sayin' the right stuff.
Wasn't the event like, today though? And the day is over?

You guys are right. Good cause, I completely agree with it. But sitting in silence will accomplish nothing. And you can't expect a lot of people to do it.

Maybe this explains the gay pride parade that happened at Cornell today, come to think of it. Probably.

So is this just an American thing? Because the 25th of April is already ANZAC day in Australia and New Zealand. Which is a holiday remembering the Australians and New Zealanders who died in World War I, and is important enough to be a public holiday.

Looking it up, I can't find any information on whether or not it's international. The people that made the website apparently just assumed that everyone reading it would be American. I hate that.

Anyway, I heard about Lawrence King. Didn't he get shot for being gay and dressing like a girl sometimes?

Yes. Hense that's why it's probably why the language of the website is American because it's aimed at an American audience. I don't think they were planning to go world-wide, but... hey...

It's not actually a public Holiday, more of just a protest Holiday. We have a lot of those around here. Nobody actually gets any days off or anything...

I did it during the school day. I planned to keep it up all day, but when I was hanging out with my friends after school, I got really bored sitting there in silence.

As far as it getting the message across, it would be way more effective if more people participated. If everyone does it, it makes a statement, but if one or two kids do it, they're just "those kids."
