I'm interested to hear your take on what would happen in one of the following situations -

1) Someone among us claims to be a prophet, seriously and genuinely claims to be one and has a "message" for all of us or claims they speak to God.

2) Someone claims they have spoken to God, and here's what he said for all of us to do, yada yada yada . . .

Who would believe such a person and not pass them off as mentally unstable or mentally ill? Isn't that what we (well, educated doctors at least) do with people like this nowadays, pass them off as a fraud or mentally ill, give `em some medicine and pay for their rehabilitation?

Wouldn't it take a genuine miracle for either of the aforementioned situations to be taken seriously? I guess it's a good thing all of the Prophets and Saints came before modern psychology . . . . Your take?

I had this discussion in my AP world history class.

Honestly, if anyone said that they would be sent to the crazy hospital.

So how many loonies that are locked up are true prophets? Who's to say that these people aren't the next messenger from God? Or, to look at it from a different point of view, who's to say that the previous prophets aren't just crazy?

It's an easy question to answer, that if someone today would claim to be a prophet what would happen? They would be locked up, but it makes you think.

--edit--
Wow, so i technically just repeated what you said. Sorry.

Or stoned to death, or hung on a cross, or beheaded.

On the other hand, if one such person were able to prove their status by healing, predicting the future, raising the dead, or other such miraculous happenings, then you might want to pay attention to them.

P.S. KissMe, since I graduated at the top of my class in college and maintained a 3.35 in my masters program, I consider myself perfectly able to use BOTH my brain and my Bible when I vote. I am, in fact, rather annoyed that you seem to believe that the two are mutually exclusive.

Only way you know if someone claiming to be a prophet or not is if 100% of what they say is true- stuff regarding past, present, and future. And also legitimately answer any sensible questions you throw at them.

The way our society is now, if anyone claims to be a prophet, they'll be either shrugged off or shipped off to a mental hospital. Think of the some of the cult leaders, they thought that they were prophets. If someone claims that they're a prophet, people will think that they are trying to start a cult.

Hey! I believe that there is a prophet in our time. Modern day prophets, apostles, and revelation are an important part of my beliefs.

Oh, I don't doubt it either, it's just that they would be thought of as crazy by people of out times. They would be thrown in a crazy house or just shrugged off.

We have modern day prophets: they'r called crazy hobos

and on Nov. 9th we got more: Truth, Regret, Mercy and Hope (heh Halo 2 funny)

But really I think they would be seen as the crazy street preachers that almost everone has seen if you take any kind of substantial walk down the streets of New York city. I think our scocity is too Jaded to accept a real prophet in this time if indeed there was one.

All right, I'll give my take

We probably would declair them mentally ill. Though I don't think that would try to rehabilitate every single person that makes these claims. After all, several homeless people make these claims, and we don't rehabilitate them.

that's where I disagree. Modern psychology has helped people understand the minds of others a little better. Before modern psycology, we would have killed those who made these claims. Humans have even killed the son of God because we didn't believe him. Even if they did some miracles, we would try to find a scientific reason why they happen. I doubt we would believe anyone who makes these claims, miracle or not.
