Because of the ruckus Prince Henry has caused, the EU is considering banning the swastika altogether. Franco Frattini, the EU's justice comisoner, said that he's open to the idea of Europe wide ban and may discuss it at the upcoming Jan. 27th meeting of . . . EU justice commisoners. Personally I don't think, at least in modern terms, that governments should ban symbols of any nature. My (very daring) take on the situation is at my website ---- http://www.danwormek.blogspot.com ----- I don't like hate crimes and I don't agree with genocide, but it seems to me that it's the misunderstanding of the common folk that make it a big deal, not the supposed misunderstanding of the Prince. Prudence demands you take into consideration the probable reaction of people when you choose something as daring as a Third Reich Officer's uniform to wear to a costume ball. |

Though I think all nazis should go [omitted] themselves, I think it should be allowed as the swastika is also used in sanscript and in hindu writings as a meaning of peace. Just because some [omitted] caused a spread of misinformation doesn't mean we should ban it all together. Let free speech reign. [Edit by InterruptorJones: That sort of language isn't allowed here, even if you're talking about fascists and even if you cleverly disguise it. Sorry.] |

I really think the EU shouldn't ban it, because it is a hindu symbol and is too often associated with Nazis. |

Exactly what I thought. Even if it is the symbol of mainly oppression and death. Though it meant something else before, and it just symbolized the Nazi country of Germany during the 40's, today it does mean and symbolize Neo-Nazism in the world. Regardless of all of this, I believe that it would be just the same as some country banning the British flag or the American flag, because we were the enemies in WWII. |

The reason they're banning it is to try to calm down all the ruckus the Prince has caused. Just like Janet-Gate last year, people get offended, and people get overboard. Unfortunatley, people over hype something, and action like this is deemed 'neccesary'. Now, I personally find what happened in in 1930' and 40's Germany horrendous, doesn't make it right to try to 'erase' a part of history. Really, it's they're trying to ban it so that the public won't get outraged again. |

I don't believe that the EU should ban it. It would be too much trouble, all from a costume. WWII has been over for aqlmost 60 years now, I haven't seen too many Swastikas around, as it seems to be a historical symbol. A similar event happened not too long ago in Georgia. There was a controversy with the Confederate flag on the state flag. The controversy was that the symbol was rascist against the African American community of Georgia. The flag in question was ratified in 1956 as a protest against the civil rights movement that was just beginning. Well, in 2001, Georgia ratified a new flag that featured all of it's previous state flags - even the one with the Confederate symbol - in a gold strip toward the bottom of the flag. This angered many folks who liked the old flag for various reasons. In fact, Georgia elected it's first Republican governor in 130 years in 2002 mainly because of the flag controversy. In 2003, Georgia voters got to vote on a new flag. However, the flag that many in the state wanted was not on the ballot. Instead, the voters had a choise between the 2001 flag or the pre-1956 flag. The pre-1956 flag won the vote. However, many people are still complaining to the GA gov't about the 1956 flag not being on the ballot. Many protested the 2001 flag with bumper stickers like "Heratige, Not Hate", and other that I can't post here. Many Confederate and old GA flags have appeared in yards everywhere in the state. It's clear that many Georgians want their old flag back. I said all of that to show what happens when a government bans a symbol. Though the circumstances are different, the state flag contorversy could serve as a model for the EU banning the Swastika. |

I agree with the post on your site. And, correct me if I'm wrong, but the ancient Greeks used a symbol that was almost a swastika... it went the other-way around, and it symbolized order (if my memory serves). So, would the EU ban the original forwards stuff along with the backwards one used under Hitler? Would they go into museums and paint over the pottery baring the symbol? I think not. I wonder what they'd say if he'd dressed up as Voldemort. |

You know what this reminds me of? A long, long time ago( when pokemon was still popular) me and my brother would collect japanese pokemon cards. One day, we found ourselves a pokemon card that had a "swastika" on it. Being a jewish family, my mother got pretty furious. She filed a report on this in "The Jewish times" and it wasn't long until she realized it was the backwards swastika, not the regular one. I think it means somethng in japanese too. BTW: it was a ditto next to one. If you've found a picture of that card, post it please. |

the swastika used to be a symbol of peace but the nazi turned it into a symbol of evil. i don't think it should be banned. i think however that neo-fascists and neo-nazis should be watched. remember history often repeats itself. |

My friends father was on a trip to a remote town in Asia and swastikas were carved into the walls of a Buddhist temple. As was said, it used to be a symbol of piece. |

Thing is, those cards weren't intended to leave Japan, and when something is published in Japan exclusively, they usually take very little care about how the rest of the world will perceive it. |

There was this Japanese movie on MST3K called "The Neptune Men" or some crap like that. The funniest part in the whole movie (to me, anyway), was when the aliens were destroying Tokyo. Well, for some completely random reason, the movie shows a building being blown up, and--get this!--There's A Giant Picture of Hitler on the Side of It! When my brother and I saw that, we were like, "What the Crap?!" We couldn't believe it! "Oh, No! They blew up the Hitler Building! Now where's everybody gonna go for Hitler rides and games? And the Hitler coffee cups and Hitler salt and pepper shakers?" |

I also have that Pokemon card. Currently its gathering value next to an article from some newspaper up near Long Island reporting on it. They didn't bother to ask any kids what exactly Pokemon cards were, instead choosing to translate by word, making the card seem to be some sort of anti-jew satanistic device. Very weird. And no, Europe shouldn't ban the symbol. I hate genocide and racism, but as is the case with the Confederate Flag, I also believe in freedom of expression, as long as it's not expression of a violent means. If Prince Harry had gone further than just wearing the suit, I wouldn't have laughed at him. But, at least he didn't kill anybody. |

Invasion of the Neptune Men, and boy, was that not the best MST3K ever? Men with tin-foil hats and rubber band chicken noses? Brilliant. |

Nothing will trump Manos: Hands of Fate. Not even Joel and the bots could save that one. |

Manos is and always will be strictly in a league of its own. Some MST3Ked films have come close to that level of awfulness to be sure (such as The Creeping Terror, The Touch of Satan, and Red Zone Cuba), but none are just as mindboggling as Manos is. Oh yeah, there's an important discussion going on in here, isn't there? I don't really feel that the swastika should be banned, mostly because it's not really the symbol itself that's the problem, it's more what it represents (well, to most people. I realize that it had its origins as a Hindu symbol). Banning use of the swastika isn't going to change the feelings and minds of those inclined to use it. |

well, though for a short time in my life,(bout one month), i beleived in what the nazis stood for, i do think that the symbol should be banned if it is the way we all know it as, tilted and mirrored. the hindu one is normaly straightend, and it is known as a swastika only in germany. secondly, when ever middle america see's a swastika, they grab there torch and pitchforks and treat whoever put it up/ showed it to them like a satanic cult leader, very, very rudley. and third, my time,(one month), as a neo-nazi soldire was only brought in because of a break-down that happend to me after my parents divorced, and a neo-nazi cult leader treated me good, then, when i said 'im in', they put me through hell. i quit some time later,(one month), and i havent herd anything from them, and thank god. now, im just a metalheand WAIT A MINUTE! IM RAMBLING! nevermind! FORGET IT ALL! BYE! |

Gotta agree with you there, thesgman. When I was on Audio Galaxy (back when they were cool), some KJV guy sent me a link to some web site that allegedly "proved" that the KJV was the only true Bible. I wrote back to him citing the Greek and Hebrew Scriptures places where this web site was wrong. I never heard from him again. TO ALL KJV NAZIS: Study your Greek and Hebrew, ya jerks! |

Off topic: Modestly Hot Guy, are you in love with that cartoon in your sig or something? On Topic: Nazism was all about brainwashing and propoganda. If your exposed to something long enough than your going to thinking "Hey.. maybe they are right." Like some people say, the key to telling a good lie is half beleiving it yourself. |
