Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the season of Lent. For Christians, it commemorates Jesus' 40 days in the wilderness. For us it is a time of preparation and repentance, often accompanied by fasting.

It is traditional for us to give up something we really enjoy for Lent. I really haven't decided to give anything up yet, but I will share that I am in a very interesting place in my relationship with God. Let's just say I have an internal battle to fight this season.

Anyway, if you are planning on giving anything up, or if you want to share any special devotional practices you plan to employ for Lent, feel free to share them on this thread.

The Lord's blessings to you as you remember him these 40 days.

And also to you.
While I'm not christian, I've decided it's good to live without so much things so I've decided to live without meat for the next 40 days. Hopefully I'll like some of the vegan foods so I can stop eating it altogether as it's been giving me health problems (No I'm not morbidly obese, just digestion problems related to red meat.)

For me, it begins a month and some days of working long, hard weeks. I work at a fish fry place, so that means that in Fridays I'll be going in at 10am and be getting out at around...oh 11 pm. Sucks. don't it? This lenten season I'm not really fasting, but more of reflecting on my life, in the past and on what's to come. Almost like a spiritual enlightenment.

I'm giving up moderation. Bring on the excesses!

Okay, bad joke.

I'm giving up frivolous, needless spending....I'm a shop-a-holic! (If it's something I REALLY need, like food, obviously, I won't deprive myself of that...but I'm going to cut back on buying clothes and needless things I get tricked into buying by the little voices in my head.)

I'm an Ex-Xian, who grew up Lutheran. On my campus there were flyers for Ash Wednesday mass. The free confessions afterward were tempting, but I had class. I saw some people with tell-tale crosses on their foreheads. I heard one girl say she was Jewish but she went anyway. Well, even if you don't get behind Ash Wednesday, you can get behind Fat Tuesday. Hooray for medieval release!

I gave up pop about four months ago, and it wasn't so hard. But then I got sick last week and I had a couple of sips of 7UP to feel better. Then the next day I was craving Mountain Dew badly, but I survived. So don't give up. I guess. I've never given up anything for lent before. How about punctuation That s a good idea None of those crazy symbols for me I mean they re really tiny and don t do much anyway

Last year I gave up cigarettes. Of course, I've never smoked in my life...

I want to give up all my bad habits (ie. nail biteing) for lent but I don't think I'm going to make it :(.

Didymus, is there any sort of penalty for breaking your lent promise? (other than guilt)

I think that's entirely up to you. But I like the 12-step approach: take one day at a time, don't beat yourself up when you do fall, and just pick yourself back up and start over again.

Also, you might want to concentrate your efforts on just one annoying habit at a time, and save the rest of them for future Lents.

Wow, this thread hasn't been touched for a while. The last time some one posted in here, I was StrongZysk

Toastpaint

Considering that Lent starts tomorrow, I feel this thread should be brought back.

So what are you going to give up for the next forty days?

I think I am going to try and give up swearing, and if that doesn't work, chocolate.

I'm probably gonna give up soda entirely, diet and otherwise.

You can help give up soda with fruit juice and seltzer water. it's really good, and much healthier (as long as it's 100%). In fact, I may go get some right now.

I'm not christian, so really this doesn't mean anything for me. I don't think there needs to be a specific day (or in this case, about a month) to improvge yoruself, it should be a life-long process.

I'm giving up a few things this year. But I usually don't like to go and tell everyone what I'm giving up.

I'm not Catholic, so I don't actually do lent, but I'm going to try and "give up" being mean to people. Not that I am in the first place, but I mean more along the lines of being more encouraging to others, and staying away from gossipy topics.

Lent is just for Catholics, I know Lutherans and Episcopalians also celebrate Lent.

I'm guessing you meant "Lent isn't just for Catholics"... I also know a Lutheran that "celebrates" Lent... I heart her.

You're right, lent is a Catholic (and maybe a few others, appatently) thing, and being Baptist, I don't do that. However, it came to mind that maybe it wouldn't be such a bad thing to try and look at myself a bit over this time period anyway, you know, as a sort of self-evaluation dealio.

I'm going to only listen to clean songs. And I will try to pray more.

I'm thinking either nail biting or smoking...

There wer school wide locker searches today, so I was all freaked that they were going to find my lighter, luckily though, I convinced the teacher to let me go to the washroom and I was able to grab it. Things like that are good motivation.

I am giving up posting at my favorite sports board for Lent.

I have over 9,000 posts there in less than two years.

Wow, a conservative estimate would put you at at least 12 posts a day. But that's assuming you only had 9000 posts over exactly 2 years.

I really should be giving something up for lent. I mean, I go to a Catholic school. I'll try to decide on something soon.

Unfortunately, today my mom packed me a roast beef sandwich. Ooops!

Latly, I have found myself making some rude remarks, so I desided to give up sarcasum for lent. Today was real hard, as was going to school with my ashes on. Lets just say that boys can be jerks.[/i]
