I was surprised that I didn't see this thread already, so I started it. Aside from answering the poll, please discuss your personal religious beliefs.

I was born and raised Jewish, but just before my Bar Mitzvah (coming of age ceremony) I decided that I was against organized religion because of its fundamental sameness. I currently beieve in God, but not the afterlife.

I'm Jewish. I've had a Bar Mitzvah but I rarely go to synagogue. I'm not religious at all: I don't keep kosher, I do work on the Sabbath, etcetera. I guess my theological status would be somewhere near agnostic, though leaning atheist at the moment. I don't see any real reason to believe in God, but if someone gives me a good reason, I guess I will :p

It is my belief that "God" is a force; the most logical and only answer I can think of for all of the illogical matter that goes on day by day.

I'm what I call a "tossed salad of idealigologies(sp?)" Here's a rundown of the moral codes I follow:

Christanity - I follow most of the ten commandments (save for the false deity one, and respect thy mother and father, but that story is for another time)

Islam - I don't eat pork (health reasons mainly) or drink alcohol that much.I also follow the five pillars of Islam that do not pertain to it (The Haaj, Ramadan etc.)

Buddhism - I meditate to regain my awareness and try to find my inner self

Hinduism - I love cows and don't eat any hamburger (anymore) and I believe in a system of reincarnation and karma. No, it;s not my flawed "Karamaism" thread thingy.

And then I add in some of my own moral principles: I believe in the right for gays to marry, I believe in no censorship and that sex in all forms, while I may not like them, are not bad or dirty. I don't count pornography as sex becuase, well, I don't want to go there on a PG rated forum.

I don't follow any organized religion, though I was (sort of) raised Catholic. The only time I really went to church, though, was at school. I made my first Communion and my first Confession with the rest of my class, but my family never went to church. Then my Confirmation came around, and I decided I didn't want to do it. So I didn't. Now I like to just live by my own morality, which I think has kept me out of trouble so far. No pregnancies, no abortions, no arrests. I'm sure I inadvertently follow some religious ideas without realizing it, because I will admit that I'm uneducated when it comes to religion - and that's all right with me. A few people in my lifetime have tried to "convert" or "save" me, and it's just not going to happen. I'm happy with the way I live, and with what I believe in (which is mostly "me" these days).

Im A christian plain and simple
basicly all you do is ask for forgiveness and open up your life for some changes (mostly in the way you act) and your saved. A little reading and some public service (like scouting.)

I don't like that word: "saved." If you never do anything wrong, but you don't ask for forgiveness, then you're not "saved." If you live well and do nice things for other people but you don't acknowledge the existence of God, then you're not "saved." Blech...

Be realistic, Evin. Have you EVER in your LIFE known ANYONE who NEVER did anything wrong?

P.S. We already have a thread for this: "Religious Affiliations"

That's true, I just meant I didn't like the concept of being "saved."

I'm not sure exactly what the problem would be. Could you be a little more specific about it?

It's not really the concept, I just think that there should be a different word for it. I don't like to believe that someone who doesn't follow the word of God needs to be "saved" from their life of evils or whatever...

Well, I'm christian

For you atheist out there, it's better to believe in jesus and god, and maybe go to heaven, than it is to not believe in heaven, god, or jesus and risk going to hell.

that's a very good arguement. I can see that you've got all sorts of reasons and explainations there: good job!

My point is, someone who's atheist doesn't worry about going to hell because they don't believe in it! duh :p

I'm not saying I'm atheists, I'm just saying that that's what they [probably] think.

I'm a born, raised, and a practicing Catholic. The thing is though, I disagree with many things that the church says. I'm for gay marriage, pro-choice, not so strict on the sexual beliefs, ect...
What I say is, and I have already stated this before, it's not of what religion you are part of, it's what you do with your life. If you lead, a good, wholesome life, with a few sins (because it's almost impossible to never sin in your life, and we are born with original sin), the you will be eternally rewarded.

Evin. Maybe the word "reconciled"?

Upon what authority do you base that, Ramrod? You might want to take a look at Ephesians 2:8-9 again sometime.

I actually like ramrods interpretation of what God has in store for us better than Ephesians 2:8-9 :p

But regarldess of whether you like it or not, Ramrod doesn't really have any basis for what he says.

Well it's his beliefs. That's his authority. Despite what the bible says, he's allowed to believe in whatever he wants. He doesn't need to believe in Ephesians 2:8-9.

I base it off my own, personal beliefs. It's not what the Bible said, or my priest said, but what my mind says.

Are you claiming that your mind can be infallible? Are you claiming equal authority to speak on behalf of God as St. Paul? Why should I accept your personal opinion over the writings of Sacred Scripture?

He's not saying that you should do anything. You believe the word of the Bible, and that's cool. He believes whatever he wants to believe. (And some people don't believe that the word of the Bible is infallible.)

But in his earlier post, he promised eternal rewards for doing good deeds. I'm challenging his right to make those kinds of promises.

He didn't promise anything.
