Anyone who's seen Bowling for Columbine can identify me as a stereotypical Canadian (at least in the gun debate). I think guns are bad. Nobody should have them except for law enforcement officers. I'm against hunting too, except for food when necessary - just to clarify my "nobody" statement. That's what I think.
Despite that I'm pro-gun, I agree with you. However, criminals will always have guns and civilians will always outnumber uniformed law enforcement officers. Concealed carry doesn't put guns in the hands of criminals, it puts guns in the hands of law abiding citizens, citizens who are probalby avid hunters and gun enthusiasts (read - trained, self control, handle a gun well). In this place we call the US, the criminals need all the inhibitions their potential victims can provide them. So by letting a few people out of hundreds have concealed guns, the criminals lose out by not knowing who could bring them down. Concealed guns reduce crime - here are some facts . . . .
Between 1977 and 1992, line regression data analysis determines concealed carry of handguns reduced murder rates by 7.65% nationwide, reduced rape rates by 7%, and reduced aggrevated assaults by 5%. However, larceny and auto theft rates climbed . . . I believe ~6% . . . don't quote me on that. Since 1992, crime rates in new areas enacting concealed carry have similar, and sometimes drastically greater, results.
