I'm sure most of you live in states enforcing concealed carry laws, since states that do enforce it heavily outnumber those that don't.

My question is this - How do you feel about law abiding and good intentioned citizens carrying around concealed handguns? Is it a good thing in the sense that it deters criminals from committing violent and confrontational crimes out of fear that their victim or those aroud them posses the hardware and skill to injure them; or is it a bad thing for raising the rates of larceny and non - confrontational crimes in areas it's enforced?

Please, by all means, go your own way with this . . .

My roommate has a concealed weapons permit, two handguns, and a rifle. I don't have a problem with it, but I don't really see the benefit. He told me he got the permit because he was bored, but who knows? However, I do believe that citizens having guns in their households discourages criminals from burglary and violent crime in another's home. At least, if I was a criminal I wouldn't want to break into a home where I knew someone in there had a gun and was willing to use it.

Just my thoughts.

A friend of my dad's carries a 9mm around city hall on his belt, we think he's a bit crazy but it's all good.

Background checks should be more extensive when getting a conceled weapons permit but I have no problem with it.

Anyone who's seen Bowling for Columbine can identify me as a stereotypical Canadian (at least in the gun debate). I think guns are bad. Nobody should have them except for law enforcement officers. I'm against hunting too, except for food when necessary - just to clarify my "nobody" statement. That's what I think.

Despite that I'm pro-gun, I agree with you. However, criminals will always have guns and civilians will always outnumber uniformed law enforcement officers. Concealed carry doesn't put guns in the hands of criminals, it puts guns in the hands of law abiding citizens, citizens who are probalby avid hunters and gun enthusiasts (read - trained, self control, handle a gun well). In this place we call the US, the criminals need all the inhibitions their potential victims can provide them. So by letting a few people out of hundreds have concealed guns, the criminals lose out by not knowing who could bring them down. Concealed guns reduce crime - here are some facts . . . .

Between 1977 and 1992, line regression data analysis determines concealed carry of handguns reduced murder rates by 7.65% nationwide, reduced rape rates by 7%, and reduced aggrevated assaults by 5%. However, larceny and auto theft rates climbed . . . I believe ~6% . . . don't quote me on that. Since 1992, crime rates in new areas enacting concealed carry have similar, and sometimes drastically greater, results.

I have a CCDW permit, so I really hope most of you can figure out how I stand on conceal/carry deadly weapons permits for law abiding citizens. I will, however, say that, at least in Kentucky, they are awfully easy to get. I mean, you do have to have a clean background, and demonstrate some knowledge, but it was nothing too serious. I think the background check you go through to buy a gun goes a little deeper in detail, although I'm not really sure how in depth it is, as all the clerk selling the weapon gets is an "approve", "denied", or "delayed".

1. Umm.. how would you conceal a hunting rifle?

2. The goverment doesn't know who is self-controled or not.

In my recent trip to the UK, If you even seen with a gun, you go to prison for five years. Not even most policeman have guns. If the situation demands it, special policemen armed with Mp5's are deployed. I like England's gun laws. I personally believe hunting for sport is a horrid thing to do. Your killing another intelligent animal for fun? That's barbaric.

Must we remember the horror which is The Columbine Shooting?

Must we remember that if there had been a teacher in the building with a weapon a lot of killing may have been averted? The Columbine kids would have gotten guns no matter if they were legal or not. Don't delude yourself into thinking that by making guns illegal suddenly the US would turn into England... there's too much tradition and too many 2nd Amendment wackos out there.

And labeling hunting barbaric is your opinion, not a fact. I don't hunt myself, but I don't have a problem with those who do. And you're going to have to define intelligent for me... because I kill spiders from time to time and consider them to be somewhat intelligent. :)

Whoa - are you suggesting that teachers should have guns? I see no reason to make kids any more afraid than they already are.

Good heavens, no, I'm not saying that guns should be used to intimidate students.

All I'm saying is it would have been nice if someone had had the ability to stop the Columbine tragedy from the inside.
