I belaive that there's no way that we're alone on this great, big universe. Impossible.

I vote no. There has to be something else out there in this crazy mixed-up universe of ours.

But of course, I could be wrong.

I voted no, but if there was an "undecided" option, I would have voted for it. I think it's likely we're alone, but I think that if the universe if infinite, then there must be some type of at least microscopic life somewhere. I don't think any aliens have ever visited Earth yet.

I think we are alone. There's no such thing as aliens. If there were, they wouldn't be able to survive. No other planet has air, and barely any other planets have water, and even on those planets with water, it's scarce. Oh, and please don't yell at me because I don't believe in life on other planets. I get that enough from my parents.

Other planets might have plenty of air and water, as we don't know all the planets in the universe. Also, maybe other life doesn't need air and water.

Just as I've pointed out on other threads before, one cannot speak resolutely on anything that is simply beyond our experience. While we have not encountered intelligent life in space yet, that does not mean that it cannot or does not exist.

No, definitely not. I think that the idea that we ARE alone in the universe is slightly conceited, to be honest.

But they probably look nothing like we expect them to look.

Oh, its virtually guaranteed that we're not alone.

In fact, if the Universe is infinite, then absolutely anything you can imagine exists somewhere. For example, there could be a galaxy exactly like the Star Wars galaxy somewhere VERY far from here. You never know.

P.S. Modestly Hot Guy, I'm no mod, but seriously: Proofread your posts, man. It's driving me nuts.

If we are alone then that is one big waste of space out there.

I think you mean waste of fat space...

To think that there's no other life in the entire universe is just plain egotistical.

Why do you make threads that are going to turn into flame wars? Theres obviously no conclusive evidence as of yet that there is other forms of live, or that there isn't. Therefore this argument will continue on forever till it goes off topic and somebody says something that shouldn't have been said.

This isn't a flame war...yet. ;)

But seriously, even if only one percent of the stars in our galaxy alone support life, that's one billion stars with life-supporting planets.

Then think of the hundreds of billions of galaxies that we know about, not counting the trillions we haven't found. Assuming only one percent of the stars in those galaxies support life...

You see where I'm going.

The problem, TinyCowboy, is the question of probability. There was only like a 1 in a billion chance that life could have immerged on our world. I'm not saying with any certainty that we are alone, only that the probability question still leaves us with the possibility that we could be alone.

True. But my point was, in such a massive Universe, one in a billion is pretty good odds.

We may find a billion more planets with no life on them, but for each planet we do find, there has to be billions and billions more. We can only observe a small area of the Universe.

Actually, that's a common misconception, and I can prove it with this nice little mathematical insight:

-The set of even numbers is infinite
-Therefore, according to your reasoning, it contains every number that could possibly exist
-However, the set of even numbers does not contain the number 17
-Contradiction!

So if the universe is infinite (and recent studies show that it's not, but is in fact one of an infinite number of universes), that doesn't necessarily mean that there must be a world where your cat didn't get hit by the car.

All right, then let me revise my reasoning a bit.

As you said, ours is just one of an infinite number of Universes. Some scientists have theorized that a new universe is spawned whenever a possible change can occur. For example, there may be a Universe where President Kennedy was never assassinated, and this is the only difference.

So I guess I'll change my statement to "If there are infinite universes, then everything you can imagine exists in one of them."

Really? Have they invented some machine that can transport you to any of those other universes? I'd buy one.

Joking aside, this is precisely the kind of thing that modern science CANNOT prove. Maybe in the year 21X6, but not now.

Well I believe in aliens, or at least SOMETHING else in this universe. And I forget what famous guy said it but

JumbleCaper, that's a fault of every single topic on this board. Debating politics and religion officially gets nowhere. That's why I swore off this board for six months.

EDIT: Make that eight months.

Actually, they do have a plan to prove or disprove this theory. You are right that they don't have the ability to do it yet though. The steps are 1) to build a functioning quantum computer. 2) Make it do a calculation with more steps than there are atoms in this universe. (ie factor a 250 digit number) 3) If it works, then it must have used atoms in alternate universes.

Check out this article from Discover Magazine for more info.

I'm not arguing against the possibility of alien life. In topics like this, I like to keep an open mind. But I am pretty sure that modern science has not yet proven the existence of multiple universes yet. Even that's possible, though, just extremely difficult to prove.

You know, we may be overlooking some types of life where we wouldn't normally think to look. Some scientists have hypothesized that the Earth itself is one big lifeform, others say fire is alive...

Some even say the Universe itself is a huge organism. They theorize that it can reproduce by creating new Universes with the matter pulled into black holes.

These are some of the things I've heard. Just throwing them out there to see what you think.

TOTPD.
