Calling for Crusades? Last time I checked, that hasn't happened in a couple of hundred years. I don't think it's fair to hold modern day church people responsible for something that happened several centuries ago. It's like trying to put me in jail because my great grandfather stole a horse.

Now as far as more contemporary things...well, that's a different matter. But I would also say that it is a good opportunity to call for reform. If you don't like one of the church's policies, speak out against it. A 16th century monk named Martin Luther did just that. It wasn't easy for him, but he stood his ground and made a difference.

Interesting religious affiliation you got there, Jesty.

Messianic Jewish. Originally just a plain ol' Protestant, but it bugs me how most fundamental Christian churches focus only on the New Testament, and pretend like the Old Testament is just a storybook that didn't affect happenings in the New Testament.

(Oh, whatever. You know I'm just greedy enough to want Christmas AND Chanukkah presents.)

Aren't we all? My mom is Catholic, dad is Jewish, so I get the best of both worlds!

Yikes, I guess you're not referring to the circumcisions then (I hope not anyway)

Where I was trained, we are taught to read the Tanak in the original Hebrew and the New Testament in Greek. We take both pretty seriously.

I'm a Frisbeetarian. I believe that when you die, your soul gets flung upon the roof, never to be retrieved.

That's all the Christian denominations that I can think of at the moment. But it doesn't matter what Christian denomination you belong to. What matters is a personal relationship with Christ and recognizing that we can only be saved by Grace not works.

A list of denominations can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Christian_denominations though the list is quite imposing. I tried to count them and ended up with a number around 640.

Essentially, Christians believe the following:

Nicea wrote:
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic* and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come.

* catholic here means "universal," as in all Christians everywhere, regardless of denomination. Some translations substitute "Christian" for "catholic" to denote the same basic idea, that all Christians are united in Christ.

I'm Chistian Reformed. Tintin didn't have it on his list, but here in west Michigan it's pretty common.

My church takes both seriously. Much of the old testament leads up to the New. "...didn't affect happenings in the New Testament..." is like the exact opposite.

I'm a non-denominational Protestant, but my mom was raised Episcopalian & my dad used to go to the Church of Golf on Sundays for years, but he now works on Sundays. My brother doesn't seem to really like church; just the hanging-out-itude of the youth ministry & the donation-based coffee bar.
