It looks like, as of now the Pope is in his last days. He recieved last rites last night.

Well, techinally, it's called the annointing of the sick. Because you can recieve it actually more than once. But it is really sad. I will be really sad when he does die, he did a lot of things for the Church. I can only hope that our next Pope can lead us into a new age, and possibly modernize some of the teachings.

I would like to see a pope from a third-world country so that he could teach
deeply religious people to care more for the poor not same-sex marriage.

There were reports about an hour ago that he died. The Vatican has denied these reports.

When I saw a retrospective of his life on the morning news I gained a lot of respect for him. I grew up (14 years and all) with him already on his slow decline, not when he did great things for the church or (my personal favorite) told roman catholics to think of the jews as your "elder brothers in faith"

I think that's stupid that they're trying to keep the pope alive! I mean, if someone is old and it's their time to die, you should just let them die. If the pope is ready to die, they shouldn't try to keep him alive.

That's a pretty subjective statement...

Who is to say when it is or isn't time for someone to die? I agree that there are points where a doctor can say "there isn't anything else we can do for him". But I was under the impression that they (being the Pope's docters) were just taking care of an old, sick man.

I've got to agree with Stu here. Again.
From what I know, the Pope has had Parkinson's disease for years, which is debilitating but not ultimately life-threatening. (Michael J Fox has had it for a long time, too, and he isn't dying.) Right now he has a urinary tract infection, which is what he's being treated for. And getting the last rites doesn't necessarily mean anything; he's had them a few times before.
He's an old, sick man, and his doctors are just treating him. I don't think they're going to any extremes to keep him alive. His time will come soon, and there's not a heck of a lot anyone can do about it.

I'm saying that's stupid that they gave the pope a respirator. I mean, he's an old man, and he's pretty much ready to die. I could understand if they gave a 10 year old a respirator, but the pope's time has come and they should just let him die.

Have you been around many hospice care situations? The oxygen is there to keep the patient comfortable, not to keep them alive, per se. Hospice patients are almost always put on oxygen in some way.

Yeah, I worked in a senior living/ rehabilitation place a couple years ago, and almost all of them had one. But in regards to the Pope, I hope that the selection doesn't cause a split in the beliefs. Like between teaching the old school ways, or teaching a modernized way.

Well, it's almost noon, and there was supposed to be a message from the Vatican like two hours ago. They keep pushing it back. I think that the Pope will not last the end of the day. He apperently keeps coming in and out of consciousness.

Although I don't agree with him on a number of subjects, I respect him a lot. He's done a lot of great things.

The thing is, the Pope tried to reach out to others of different beliefs. The Pope has done so many grea things that he has made me proud to be a Catholic.

What happened there? I probably learned this in school and in Church, but forgot. As for John Paul, at least he is one with the Lord now.

The Council of Trent basically declared that anyone who believes in Protestant doctrine and/or are not in communion with the Roman Church are heretics and damned to hell. Now I understand that Vatican II tried to correct some of that error, but it left the original document of the COT in place, meaning that, when you get right down to it, we Protestants are still heretics in the eyes of the Roman Church.

It will be interesting to see how things develop over the next 50 years or so.

I have respect for Pope John Paul II, though. He was always a very conscientious man and respectful of other religions.

No, it's almost impossible that it's going to happen. I was watching the news, and they were talking about that, and they said tht it was amost impossible that it was going to happen
