everything in this country is starting to get to politically correct. i mean, now on sesame street, due to a ongowing PC battle, Cookie monster is giving up his cookie habit, and is now turning to HEALTHY MEANS!(Probably the Atkins Diet......) fairy tails like Snow white or Cinderella are now being turned into storries that have a Legal View to them, and insted of saying dwarves, they say "Tall Staturaly Challenged", or something like that. its getting pathetic, think of our kids, man!

I've never heard of any of these things happening. They might just be rumors.

The Cookie Monster thing is factual. But honestly, I'm all for children's shows teaching children healthy habits and outlooks, unlike Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings.

However, I'm opposed to revisionism, a la Spielberg removing the guns from E.T. If they went back and removed the cookies from all of the Cookie Monster scenes in old Sesame Street episodes, I'd be upset.

I'm not too sure about the Cookie Monster's new leaf. That's like Homer Simpson slimming down, working hard, paying attention to his kids and reviving his marriage. (Well, for longer than the duration of one episode, anyway.)

It's a funny thing, actually - the conventional tales we know as common fairy tales have already been censored to Queensland and back. Take Cinderella: the original version (well, an early version - the original might have been gorier) involves the evil stepmother cutting off parts of the ugly sisters' feet to try and make their shoes fit the glass slipper. (One loses her toes, the other her heel.) And at the end, birds come and peck their eyes out.

So if you're not in favour of tales being changed, you should probably feed your kids that version.

I hope the Cookie Monster thing doesn't last long these kids are going to be deprived of the "C is For Cookie" song

Except that The Simpsons isn't a children's show.

PvP has a very astute strip on the subject which I could agree with more.

This PC thing just kinda confuses me. About a week ago, in the Lexington Herald Leader, pretty much the main newspaper for Eastern and Central Kentucky, there was a letter saying that the paper needed to learn "People-First Language", whatever that is... I really don't know how to describe it, so I'll just let you read the letter and decide for yourself. The letter is titled, "Put the People First" and really confuses me.

To me an autistic person and a person with autism are the same thing. It's all semantics to me.
I know of people who are disabled, if you ask them, they say they're disabled. I know handicapped people, if you ask them, they'll tell you they're handicapped. Still, I suppose this is better than disabled people being "differently abled", because, when you think about it, we're all differently abled.

The letter made quite a lot of sense to me.

It just lost me... I don't mean to sound like an insensitive jerk, but to me, the whole issue is little more than a semantic debate. No matter what we call them, these people still have the same condition. We should spend a lot less time debating the name, and focus more on actually helping them..
Why don't we let the people who have conditions decide what to call them (yes, I realize that it isn't possible in all situations)?

i aggree.
what about this thing of having to say "Under God" in the pledge? or getting "in god we trust" off the coins and dollars? or about removing a cross from the court house? to me, its all just stupid. why be concerned of something so small like those four words can make some FULL-FLEDGED-LIBERALS go nuts. i mean, its just a few words or just a small symbol that doesnt really matter that make a whole community to split apart. it doesnt matter, its just a few symbols and words, it doesnt effect you any way that could cause harm, some people think that "OHH noo! remove that from our money or its gonna effect our children to beleive that there is a god in the afterlife!" i mean, thats just so stupid, it doesnt matter, its just a few words and symbols. im out

I agree with you, MHG. (For once ;) )

If one tiny thing happens to offend one person, why change it? I mean, I understand where PC people are coming from, but the extent it's been taken to is radiculous.

I think that rather than have Cookie Monster change his diet, they should just bring back Captain Vegetable.

You should ask a FULL-FLEDGED-CONSERVATIVE some day how they would feel if our currency said "In Allah We Trust".

I consider myself a full fledged conservative. I would probably just be confused as to why we're using the Arabic word for God in a sentence that is otherwise english...

Of course it is. Anyone can talk about it at any age, as long as they know what they're talking about.

As for the healthy Cookie Monster, that's just wrong. It shatters my childhood.

Wouldn't it be hilarious if Cookie Monster's digestive system was unable to metabolize vegetables and the poor guy died of gastro-intestinal failure?

HEHEHEHEHEHE!(peter griffin laugh) that'd be freakin sweet, i mean, right there infront of the children, his stomach starts to buldge up and down, and he begans to moan and suddenly a little vegitable monster blasts through his stomach, covering the children sitting in a little circle with his inards blowing on them, and the vegitable monster hisses like that one in the movie alien, and then jumps on a counter, puts on a little top hat and cane, and begins to sing that song "Hello My Baby" from that old cartoon with the frog from the WB like in spaceballs. heheheh! that'd be freaking hilariouse!

There's some reason for political correctness, but yeah, some of it has gone a little out there.

True, true. On the other hand, not all children's shows have to contain moral messages. I doubt that any kids see Cookie Monster as a role model any more than adults see Homer as one.

Notwithstanding that it completely goes against the principle of a secular nation?

I think you're mistaken. Firstly, kids don't see anyone as a role model -- they don't even know what the term "role model" means. But they do take their cues from the world around them, and with kids watching hours and hours of TV every day, that's where they're learning behavior.

And even if the show doesn't contain moral messages, kids will still learn from it, for better or worse.

I grew up on Sesame Street, The Simpsons, Beavis and Butthead, and South Park, where do you think my morals are.

..and anyway, when did we start talking about morals? The Cookie Monster thing is about good dietary habits, not morals.

it doesnt matter jones, ive made several cartton characters, i know what its like to have people change my work because "Its To PI, Theres too much violence, That little girl in that strip shouldnt be a satanist./...yaddayaddayadda", it feels bad, i know, ive had to change it several times. insted of the main character being a smoking twelve year old, to a Mischievious little brat, and that little satanic girl in the strip was orrigionally going to be a Nazi,(Dont Coment on that, and dont ask), but they said it'd wouldnt attract an audience. i know... those sound like stupid ideas......ya know what? forget the whole comic strip thing, forget it. ya know what? im gonna open a topic about How Much Is Censorship. oi.... maybee i shouldnt have opend this post?? nevermind, keep it open, and disscuss amongst urselves, im out of here for Doom3 for about a week or six, see ya.

Good point. However, I will fall back on the cliché of bad parenting being at fault. If a child is taught by their parents that cookies are a sometimes food, it removes the need for TV to tell them.

Yeah, but I always refer to "lessons to be learnt" from children's media as "the moral". Even if it has nothing to do with morality.
