Not quite religious/political material, but it could stir up debate all the same...

Let's say you're given a free gift: one million dollars! OK, well, not quite a free gift. There's a catch: if you accept, your best friend, your biggest bestest friend in the whole wide world, must go to prison for six years. He'll know you betrayed him, too, so things will never be the same between you two again. If you decline, your friend will never know of your opportunity (and wouldn't believe you if you told him).

What do you choose?

Even though my heart is saying that I would give up the monry just to keep my friendship, I know I would be tempted to take the money instead. Most if the people posting would probably do the same thing. Unless it was someone you really love.
So I answered this question the way I know I would answer it. No matter what I want to do, I will always be tempted, and this is a good example.

I would rather not harm anyone for money.

I'd take the money, and after he was out of jail, I'd give him at least half of it. After all, he helped me get it.

I would never do that, just because my best friend is so special to me. She's been my best friend for 17 years, and she's had a hard life - her parents divorced when she was very young, and both of them remarried, then her dad got divorced again and moved to Trinidad, her mom lived about 6 hours away and last week she passed away due to cancer. No way I'd force any suffering on that girl, even for a million dollars.

Even though I admire Ikapapa's honesty, I must say that to me there are just some things more important than money. The guilt of something like that would eat me up inside, and to me, that's not worth a million buckazoids.

MHG:

I am truly sorry about your friend. Sounds like she really needs a good friend like you.

Thanks, Didymus. I'm trying to do all I can, but it's tough since she's in her mom's town right now. I wish I could go and be with her, but it's finals time and there's no way I can take any time out to make a long trip. Her fiance, brother and stepdad are with her, though, so at least she's not alone. I also wish I could've gone to the funeral for me, too, since her mom was like a second mom to me. This isn't about me, though, as her loss is obviously much greater.
But all the e-hugs in the world don't make up for a real one.

One million isn't worth it to do something so mean. That would be a terribly selfish act.

Heck yeah I'd do that! Now don't hate me just yet.

When he goes to prison and I get my million dollars, I'd pay for his bail and give him half! Everybody wins!

As far as I know, bail is paid when someone is in jail awaiting trial for a potential prison sentence. So you can't pay bail to get out of prison.

Better rethink your strategy! ;)

I wouldn't do that. No amount of money can be put on friendship.

No way. Friendship is one of the most important things to me, and I'd never hurt the people I care about, even if I was living in a box on the street. Money isn't important to me.

It's only a million. Sure, I'd love to have a million free dollars, but people make stupid decisions with money. I'd buy a mansion and not be able to pay my bills. My friend will not go to jail for a million dollars.

I doubt I could enjoy my million dollars if I had done that.

I couldn't do it. Not for a million. Comparatively, a million dollars isn't that much when you look at someone like Bill Gates.

Now, offer me a billion, that's a whole other ball game...

No, my best friend means way more to me than a million dollars.

Yes. I'd give him half the money, though.

I assume collaboration is not allowed? If so, then definitely no.

Lemme remind everyone that a million doesn't go very far now-a-days, if you raise the stakes and seeing that I am currently at cold war with most of my friends I might consider it.

One word: No. K, maybe 3 words. Maybe 7. Or maybe--ah, who cares.

If you don't think a million dollars goes very far, you can go ahead and give it to me if you like... :P

I'm talking about some of it going to capital gains tax, food, medical and auto and life insurance. If I had a job and 1,000,000 I wouldn't quit it.

For the ones with no friends: what if it included loved ones?

In said situation, I'd turn down the cash. But if I got enough money I'd probably buy (or create and then own) the copyright to the Holy Bible.
