OK, this is another one of those hypothetical questions like furrykef's and Simon Zeno's. It's an interesting question.

You and a friend have fallen out of an airplane somehow. You have one parachute between you, and you are currently holding it. Your friend is unconscious. Do you keep the parachute or give it to your friend and pull the ripcord for him? You can't both use it.

Don't hate me, but I'd keep it. There's still a chance, one strangled chance, that my friend could survive. I also would think that giving my friend the parachute could end up in us both dying. What if I missed in the grasp for the rip cord?

To be honest, I haven't voted yet. I really don't think I could make up my mind, although I'm leaning towards keep it, since the friend is unconscious and he'll never know what happened.

I would probably keep the parachute and hold my friend or something like that.

Keep it. We're already falling out of an airplane. I doubt I have time to get the parachute onto the unconscious guy and pull the ripcord for him, so we'd both get killed anyway

Keep it. There's a chance he won't survive anyway, so if I give it to him it could end up with both of us dead.

Give it. If you do theres a chance that you will both survive, if you dont only you will.

Keep it. Your friend's unconsious. Also, I would not have time to put the parachute on the guy, and pull the rip cord. I would use it, and hold onto my friend for dear life.

Oh, well then I might use it. If my friend is unconsious, he'll never know. And If I give it to him, he might never wake up anyway.

Ok: I read this in a extreme situations survival manaual somewhere. I could keep the parachute and wrap some of the straps and ropes around his arms. Itll break both his arms when I pull the cord, but hell probbly live

I would put it on, grab my friend, pull the cord and that way we'd both float down saely.

You can't both use the parachute, you have to choose.

No middle of the road here.

Now this is much harder.....I can't choose, honestly. It's an impossible decision.

Give it to the friend. I couldn't live with myself if I didn't.

I'd feel awful if he or she died, but I'd probably keep it - them being unconsious, there's a greater chance of them dying with the parachute than there is of me dying with it. I'd still grab hold of them, though, if it might give them a chance...

Technically we wouldn't both be using it if I held on to him.

Well, yeah, you would. The parachute would keep you both safe.

As for me I'd totally give him the parachute. I don't want him to die; at least he's still alive if he's unconscious.

I'd give my friend the parachute. I'd live in guilt for the rest of my life knowing that I could have saved my friend. I'd feel like a murderer, and I'd rather die than have that.

I don't know anything about parachuting, but don't you have to be consciouss to land properly and stuff so you don't hurt/kill yourself? It depends on the friend, but I'd probably keep it.

I'm going to assume that the spirit of the question is that the person with the parachute will definitely survive, and the person without it will definitely not. Things like "you can't put the thing on him and pull the ripcord in time" sound to me like they violate the spirit of the question.

Anyway, it depends entirely on the friend in question. I couldn't bear to see my closest friends die. Anybody else, I would have to make an evaluation: are they more likely to get something out of life than I am? Do they have more potential than I do? Of course, it would be impossible to fully reason through it if the scenario were to actually happen, but that's the great thing about hypothetical scenarios... ;)

I'd think it'd be a snap decision. It's impossible to say what I'd decide at the time. Most likely I'd keep it and comfort my conscience with "well, it sure was unfortunate there wasn't two parachutes..." but who knows what might happen. I'd like to think I'd subconsciously take stuff like Kef mentioned into consideration in that snap decision, or things like does the other person have dependents and I don't. But honestly, in that actual situation, I'd probably choose self-preservation.

Depends...Is it a close friend?

Seriously, I would keep it, but in real life, If I was close enough to give him the parachute, I'd grab him while we gently float down.

To be honest.

Though, cant do that in this scenario, so, I'd keep it. If he's unconsious, There's a chance that he's dead already.

I remember this topic. I would probably keep the parachute. I know that if I were the unconscious one, I'd want my friend to keep the parachute. Falling from an airplane and hitting the ground while unconscious is a great way to die. Falling from an airplane and hitting the ground while conscious... not so much.

Lol wut's with the sudden and random topic resurrection?

Also, when I saw Jitka's post, I thought Jitka had returned. Thanks a lot, lemon123, you dirty necromancer. You killed my soul.

Anyways, I'd totally keep the parachute. Like mah momma always said, you snooze, you lose.

I was also quite confused, especially when I saw that I had already posted in the topic.

I'd at least wanna know that I'm dying first. I'd hate to suddenly end up in line for the Pearly Gates without knowing why I got there so soon. :p

Welcome back, BTW.

Yeah, I hate hypothetical moral questions about things that are unlikely ever to happen in my lifetime. And if it did I would be able to hold onto the other person, probably. So screw it.

Okay, let's get to the straight point of this question: If you and your friend were naked, tied up separately in a sound proof room, and your friend was asleep, and there was some guy who said he'd kill one of you and let the other go, would you sacrifice yourself, or let your friend die?
