Okay, let's get to the straight point of this question: If you and your friend were naked, tied up separately in a sound proof room, and your friend was asleep, and there was some guy who said he'd kill one of you and let the other go, would you sacrifice yourself, or let your friend die?

I'd shoot the guy and then use my penknife to get both of us untied.

Then I'd make sweet love to my friend while they were still asleep.

I said both you and your friend are NAKED.

What, homerstarrun70fireboy, ya never heard of people hiding things in body cavities?

I think the whole point of this thread, Einoo, is to show just how altruistic we really would be. Would we be willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for a friend? Does it always depend on the circumstances and the friend involved?

Yes.

Glad we got that settled, then.

A couple of things to think about:

1. It would depend on the friend in some cases. If it was like just a drinking buddy, for example, that might be one thing. But if it was someone I knew who I cared very deeply about, or if I knew that they were needed by people more than me (say, if he/she was married with kids), and things of that nature. If I had a wife and kids, I'd take that into consideration as well (my duty to them).

2. It would also depend on a great deal on your own state of mind at the time. Even though you might hope that you would do what it best, you might find that in the situation, your mind is overcome by fear, such that, even if you know what the right thing to do is, you end up doing the opposite.

Welcome back, BTW.

Thanks. :)

For some reason, I usually find it hard to return to forums after I've been gone for a while. But maybe I'll stay longer this time.

Everyone seems to be either overthinking this, or thinking about it too literally, missing the actual point of the question. Like furrykef said, the question has nothing to do with parachuting, but simply would you sacrifice your life to save the life of your friend if there were absolutely no other options that would allow both of you to live?

I'm sure at least a few of them did it on purpose, because they basically don't want to answer the question.

If only life were always that easy!

It depends on if this is a real friend or a pretend friend. Real friend, most likely yes. Pretend friend no. All my pretend friends are gonna kill themselves when they're 20 anyways/get AIDS.

Yes. It's also much more fun this way.

I'd say quite a few are answering the question in the spirit that it was intended. Like here:

If it were just my friend, as much as I'd like to say that I could give away the 'chute, I really think my instinct for self-preservation would kick in, and I'd keep it. Now, if it were my wife or one of my children, or possibly even one of my brothers, I would definitely try to ensure their survival. I couldn't live with myself otherwise.

I'm not sure if almost one month is considered a bump, and if it is, sorry, but oh well.

I'd keep it. My friend might be dead anyway, and since he's unconsicous or however it is spelled, he'd probably die in the air.
