I had a phylisophical question for people out there. I was listening to TMBG's Where Your Eyes Don't Go and I heard one part that made me think: They Might Be Giants wrote: Should you worry when the skullhead is in front of you,
Or is it worse because it's always waiting Where your eyes don't go? And I wondered, would you rather know when you're going to die, or have it be a total mystery untill it happens? If anyone else has something they want to duiscuss they can do so here. (sorry if it's ABP'd) |

I'd rather not know. If I knew, I'd probably worry about it and my life would be worse. Death comes when it comes. Oh, and shouldn't this be in Religion and Politics? Ah, whatever. |

I'd rather think,"What HAPPENS to me when i die?" Do I just shut down? Does everything go black? What happens if i don't go to heaven or hell? |

I wouldn't like to know exactly when and how I was going to die and there is nothing I can do about it. However, I would like to know when and how I was going to die unless I did something about it. Example: You know you are going to die by being crushed by an anvil even if you try to move out of the way. OR You know you are going to die by being crushed by an anvil unless you move out of the way. |

So it's almost like,"You have the power to save yourself?" |

Yeah, I would rather have the power to save myself than just know when I was going to die. |

Do I just shut down? Does everything go black? What happens if i don't go to heaven or hell? If you don't go to heaven or hell, you'll probably just wind up in Wisconsin, until George Carlin becomes a cardinal, then... |

Quote: (I was gonna say, if you don't go to heaven or hell, you'll probably just wind up in a pay toilet in Wisconsin, but I felt that certain tingle, and went with it from there.. And you all know where the Wisconsin thing came from, right, kiddies?)
But then you had to go and try to explain it (and yes, we know -- or at least I do). |

Okay, what I'm about to say will give away the ending for Star Wars Episode III, so: Quote: At the begining Anakin has a dream about Padme dying while giving birth. Now, if Anakin didn't have that dream the Jedi might not have had their order destroyed and he may live happily with Padme, Luke and Leia in secret. And if the Empire did come into creation even though Darth Vader never became reality, they would definately be weaker, most likely leaving the Emperor to command the Death Star, and being weaker because the person the destroyed the most Rebellion fighters in A New Hope was Darth Vader. So would the Star Wars universe have been happier if Anakin never had that dream?

This is bizarre, cause I just had a conversation about this very thing during my date last night. (I know, weird conversation topic for a date!) He felt that he'd rather know, so that he could have some time to think about things and set things right. I'd rather not know, personally. I try to do right by people and have few regrets so that when I go, I won't need to worry about that. I'm kind of afraid of death. As a Christian, I shouldn't be, but I always worry about it anyway. *wanders off to happier discussion* |

I think I'd rather know when I'm going to die so I could get things straightened out with people I know, telling them how much I respect everything they've done for me and such, and live life more to the fullest than I maybe would have otherwise. As long as it's not something like being told I'm going to die in something controllable like a car accident, say, 5 years from now, I'd be okay with it. It's not something I or anyone can control anyway, so it's pointless to worry too much about my own death. Heck, in a certain way I'm looking forward to it as just another 'step' in life, though I certainly feel like I'm far, far away from taking that step just yet. Also, some people really seem to know, maybe subconsciously, that they're going to die soon despite their eventual deaths being unexpected and sudden. Case in point - 12 years ago when my grandfather died suddenly of a heart attack after a normal pickup basketball game. He was apparently talking to my mom like he knew it was going to happen a few months before around the time of his birthday, and at 60, it's not like he was that old either. |

It would be pretty cool to say something like "Sorry, I can't go to your party. I'm gonna be dead next week." |

What if you found out you committed suicide? Would that just drive you to do it, or would you keep a mindset not to do it? I'd be pretty freaked out if that happened. |

You really shouldn't be too worried about giving away the end of Episode III... I mean, most of us who would care have seen Episode IV... We talked about this tonight at work. I've decided that I don't want to know when I'm going to go. It would be nice, cus, towards the end, you could do all kinda things you wouldn't normally do. On the other hand, it would keep you from living each day like it is your last, cus you know which day is your last. |

As long as I didn't die in some weird way, like having a giant monkey throw barrels at me, or being attacked by flying turtles, or cornered in a maze full of edible dots by a bunch of surly ghosts, or sworded by a knight while trying to burninate his village (or arrowed by the Arch Deluxe--how embarrassing!). |

Yeah, those deaths wouldn't be any fun. What about dying because you touch someone and you don't have any rings cus you got hit earlier and they all flew away from you? That doesn't seem like it'd be very fun. |

What'd be cool is you think of an awesome way to die (don't tell me there's no "cool or "hip way to die), then see what happens to get to it. Example: You think you die as a rabbit. You wake up, eat breakfast, meet a guy who sells fur coats, buy a rabbit skin coat, wear it to the dry-cleaners, fall into the dryer, the suit shrinks and you die as a rabbit. |

I'd think it would be cool to get blown up in an alien spaceship after pressing the self-destruct button to save the world. |

And then this guy with a bionic eye would set up us the bomb, and all our base are would belong to him. We would have no chance to survive make our time. |

You never fail to make me smile, Didymus. When I go, I want to go peacefully, in my sleep, just like Grandpa.. Not screaming and trying to get out, like the other people in the car with him. |
