Well, that's about it. Do you think that the military in America takes up way too much of the national budget, or should we give more for a more secure feeling? Amount of military spending Some things we spent money on recently (read bottom) (Whoa 300th post) |

I am in favor of maintaining a strong, ready military force. As a veteran myself, I can see the importance of being well armed and ready in case an enemy rises and we must defend either ourselves or our allies. However, I am in favor of an all-volunteer force, too. Only people with the courage to put their lives on the line should be allowed to serve. A draft or any other unfair measure that forces unwilling participants in the military presents a disciplinary problem, and, imho, is simply unjust. I also believe that the predominant amount of funding should go toward weapons technology that would prevent direct threat to our troops. Stealth technology and smart bomb technology I think are the best resources. Why waste the lives of troops, when you can use technology to do the job? I am not, nor have I ever been, in favor of the current situation in Iraq. With our technology, even if Saddam had weapons, we could have avoided a war with just a few well-placed missiles. Just bomb the suspected facilities, and then withdrew and let the old Crazy Man fume about how he doesn't have the resources to strike back at us. A full-scale war was never necessary. And now, since it turns out that the alleged WDM's were a complete fabrication anyway. Needless to say, none of the current White House staff will receive my vote in 2008. So, in short, I am all for a strong military force, but managed and used wisely. |
