At my home church, our philosophy for giving is that whatever you decide to give in your heart, we ask that you cut that in half & give the other half to another ministry, church, Christian charity, missionary, or just anyone spreading God's love.

So, how does your church encourage you to give?

Straight up 10%... Also an offering once a month to go toward helping those who need it.

Our church mails envelopes to all the parishioners. During the week, you put in as much money as you want, then during the service people walk around with baskets and you drop the envelopes in. That money goes to help the church. After that, there is another collection for charities or missionaries or whatever. It's like that at every Catholic church I've been to. Average donations per person per week are maybe $10.

A tithe is literally 10%, so if you are paying tithing, it is 10%.

^But do you yourself give all of that to your church, or does any of it go to someone else working for God?

The full 10% goes to the church to use for buildings, printing, some activities, etc...

There is also a monthly donation (as seamusz mentioned) that is used to help the needy.

The 10% tithing goes straight to church headquarters, where it is then used for:
# Constructing temples, chapels, and other buildings.
# Providing operating funds for the Church.
# Funding the missionary program.
# Preparing materials used in Church classes and organizations.
# Temple work, family history, and many other important Church functions.
# Education.

The monthly donation (called a Fast Offering) is given to the local leadership to use first within the local neighborhood. What isn't used at that level can be distributed to people in more geographically distant areas.
