Yeah, really. Who stops in the middle of a debate to basically say "Hey, we're having a debate! I like debates! You're good at this! I like debates! We're debating! Yay!"

Just my two cents...You should listen to Gecko and Didymus, Chocobot.

Choco/MHguy, isn't it possible that because of Solomon's great wisdom, and his influence and other "magical" things he seemed to be able to do, that some people have thought he was performing magic, when he really actually wasn't? Paganini, you're thinking of. That's very well put - it's hard to make any definate conclusions about figures such as Solomon, because so many stories have evolved about him and other Judeo-Christian figures - found both in the Bible and in folklore. It's always wise to have a pinch of salt handy when talking about such things.

Thank you for changing your sig. :)

Normally, I would agree with you about the urban legend thing, except that I PERSONALLY know the woman in the ouija board story - she's not just a friend of a friend of a friend.

I believe you, SC, but without having such an experience of my own, I just have such a hard time being intimidated by something trademarked by Parker Brothers.

If I hadn't had that friend, I'd COMPLETELY agree with you IJ; admittedly nothing that I'm aware of ever happened to me or my best friend. I just figure better safe than sorry - I don't feel I'm missing out on anything by staying away from them, that's for certain.

the first is about this experience, and the otherone is a fictional story with a character named H.P. Lovecraft, i think you can guess it from there, but didymus, im not going against what what you did for me, its just ive been planning this book for so long

howd u get that ian? either way, hes right, but im not sure if i wana make it where H.P saves the world, i was kinda thinking that H.P. should almost save the world, but because of one thing that happend, he becoms the ruler of evil in the world, then in the second book, another man saves the world from the evils of the book and lovecraft.

Sort of an Annikan Skywalker meets Frodo Baggins. Sounds interesting. Well, the best to you in your writing.

Wait. H. P.? Could this possibly refer to another wizard type character exposed to dark magic?

I am, of course, referring to HEWLETT PACKARD!!

It means get back on topic.

P.S. Most of the time the question "what does that mean?" can be answered by referring to the TEF Dictionary.

Looks like somebody needs to work on his music genre flashcards. :)

Rammstein have been accused of a lot, but never (AFAIK) demonic lyrics. But Rammstein isn't Black Metal or Death Metal. And I think it's a big misapprehension too say that their "sounding demonic" is "what makes them cool."

Black Metal certainly has frequent Satanic/occult overtones (whether that makes it "The Occult" itself isn't for me to say), but Death Metal, though it frequently uses death as a motif, usually lacks the Satan/occult aspect.

I usually stay out of music style discussions. I'd say concentrate on the lyrical content instead. If it encourages you to worship dark gods or sign a "Satan Can Have My Soul" contract, then you might want to avoid it.

I never was a huge fan of metal, but I did love Iron Maiden's "Rime of The Ancient Mariner." "Water water everywhere, and all the boards did shrink. Water water everywhere, and not a drop to drink."
And yes, I know it was original to Samuel Taylor Coleridge. That's what makes it ejjycashunal.

Eh, personally, on the magic issue--I don't think all magic is necessarily evil or derived from the devil. I mean stuff like Harry Potter type magic, not glaringly obvious occult stuff.

In fact, I personally don't understand why many believe magic in any sort of form is unerringly derived from the power of Satan, or that it would conflict, offend, or go against God's will. Heck, in a way, you could consider miracles performed by certain saints to be a type of magic, one derived from the power of God.

I know (and have known) quite a few Wiccans, and they're angry that Satanists've co-opted their symbols, which only re-enforce views that they're Satan worshipers (they're not and don't make pacts with demons or other monsters).

Furthermore ... Hmm, here's a mental exercise. In Didymus' recap of the legend of the Golem, replace Golem with "nuclear technology." (I'm not trying to derail the topic, I just want to invoke some thinking on the subject! I have a point! I have a point! *toastpainted out the window*)

The whole shindig with music: I'll just note, it's interesting to see how many Christians are a fan of black metal/death metal (and dress up like Goths, but are out-and-out Christians). A friend of mine thought that kind of thing was hypocritical, or just plain wrong. I suppose it's just a measure of how strong their faith is, I suppose ...

Personally I avoid anything that has lyrics like "WE MUST (extend) the (martian plastic truck) of SATAN." Not that I'm easily influenced, I just don't like music with that kind of message. *shrug*

1. Harry Potter magic is the type that cannot be taken seriously (at least not by sane people). Or for that matter, Bewitched or I Dream Of Genie, either.

2. Actually, we can distinguish between the miraculous power of God and the work of demonic powers. St. John tells us that any spirit (i.e., source of magic) that does not bring glory to Jesus Christ as true God in the flesh, such a spirit is not from God and should not be trusted. So, no, I do not think that a miracle performed by a saint can be classified the same way as the power of magic. Though there certainly were some saints who were accused of witchcraft. For example, Simon Magus thought that St. Peter must have been some kind of warlock, but he learned differently.

3. That's why I prefer people actually look at the content of their music rather than style. Not that style is completely devoid of meaning in and of itself, but lyrical content can be examined, whereas it's much harder to look at chord progressions and rhythms and say resolutely, "This is satanic."

I'm a bit like that. I don't listen to that kind of music (it's just too screamy for my tastes), but I do tend to dress in a manner that could be considered "goth".

And speaking of "Harry Potter-type magic"...I had a dream last night where some people I know (some friends, some not) and I were playing this game where we kept throwing insults and stuff at each other, especially the littler kids. I pointed my finger at one of them and said, "Imperio!". When nothing happened, I said "Avara kedabra!" Once again, nothing happened. I gave up at that point...make of that what you will.
