ya know, i dont really know why we are caring so much about 1 person, while there are still thousands of missing americans all around the world. so just because she got lost in aruba, makes it a national story? i say lets stop giving money in search of this girl, and spend it wiseley, maybee on alternative fuels, or somthing, not on this girl whos been missing for 88 days and her parents still think she's alive. i mean, last night on CNN this female reporter was making a nucence that all of the police are looking for the body, while the suspect is lounging in his jail cell reading a book. what else is he supposed to do in prison? watch TV? Play X-box? or should he be the one out there looking for the body? jeze, this annoys me really.

That's kind of cold if you ask me. Let me put it to you this way, what you do if it was ine if your loved ones who was missing? If it was my of my family, I would be down there helping in anyway I could, until they were found.

yeah, but this isnt about us, we live in a dog-eat-dog world, "so what if your kids missing? i got problems of my own", thats how i view life, and plus there are more americans lost in europe, and asia, and africa, why arent we searching for them and giving them as much attention as this one girl.and the government is having to pay all theese people looking for the body, and eventually were gonna want to try the suspect here in america. that will cost even more money, money that could be used to a better cause. maybe supporting the war? or going to alternative fuels so we dont end up using all the oil in the world.

When you got the money (or the looks) to get on national tv, then that fits in perfectly with your "dog-eat-dog" world.

I do agree somewhat with the rest of your post. But what if it was your kid that was missing? Wouldn't you want everything possible done?

I think the primary reason this is getting so much attention is the location: Aruba. Aruba is considered by a lot of people to be a peaceful paradise. it is a place that people are supposed to feel safe. Another reason is our government, since 9/11 our government has cared more for the safety of its people more than ever. To the government, people are much more important than alternative energy sources. The last reason is the cost, the cost of this is pocket change for the federal government. oh, one more thing, the government has looked for our other missing Americans. Look at Vietnam. We went back in there after the war was over to rescue American POWs, like John McCain.

yeah, but what about all the other missing americans in other parts of the world? look at the hostages who got killed, and they were just visiting and/or reporting. what about them? what about all of our POW's in iraq? what about every other lost american? huh? what about them? exactaly. "What about them?"

For the non-Americans, here's the story.

I don't think you need worry about people spending too much time on this case, COLA. I'd imagine the media will soon lose interest in this story, and consequencely it will fade from the public's eye, and consequencely to that, the authorities may lose their impetous to find this girl.

But what's important here is this family's pain. Their chances of getting their daughter back safely depends on a whim - the whim of those who took her, the whim of media interest, the whim of those the family relies on to find her or (if it has come to this) bring her killers to justice. It's easy for us to give in to cynicism - but cynicism has its victims.

The United States has a policy about that: Never negotiate with terroritsts. The government doesn't negotiate with terrorists because that would show the terrorists that they are winning. I can tell you for a fact that the government hates this policy, but it is a policy it must have.

We look for them, remember Jessica Lynch? We look very hard for our POWs. I know that the Army Rangers and the Navy Seals specialize in finding American POWs. And like WHF said, eventually the media will lose interest.

The primary reason is that she's a pretty white girl with rich parents.

Missing Pretty Girl syndrome, you mean?

The one thing I've been dismayed with is the behavior of the parents in regards to their missing daughter. The mother especially has acted in ways that don't reflect well on the rest of us Americans ...

A week behind on this one, but I'll chime in since what I've got to say is kinda universal.

Any time someone says that the Natalee situation is ridiculous, someone always chimes in with "well if it was your kid, wouldn't YOU?" Same crops up with the Terri Schiavo debate.

Listen, you are refuting a rational opinion with an emotional response. Quite frankly I want to set the guy's house on fire that broke into my car, but I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be considered a "fair punishment" now would it? In the case of Natalee, you've got police from three countries all working down there, media blitz all over the US and freakin' warplanes from Holland looking for this girl.

I wouldn't even support this kind of a search if it was the president's kid or a movie star. It's one person, let them go through the same system as everyone else in the world. The ONLY reason this kind of a search would be warranted would be if for some reason the kid's safety was a matter of national security.

While I do think things have gone a bit overboard, I can kinda understand the media's interest in the whole thing. After all, this kind of thing rarely happens in Aruba. However, I do think the fact that she's a pretty girl helps. -_-

Unfortunately, I doubt that she's still alive.
