I never heard anything about how New Orleans deserved it based on race, but I did hear some extremist Christian site talking about how they deserved it because they were about to hold a gay festival. Yes, I'm sure God chose to punish an entire city, despite the whole "If there are only ten good people, I will spare the city on their behalf," thing.
I think that site needs to shut up.
I don't see this hurricane as "divine wrath" or anything of the sort, merely an effect of the weather patterns, nothing more. We live in a cursed world, and as such, natural disasters are going to happen, regardless of morality or lack thereof.
What if Katrina had ended up hitting Georgia or some other state in the heart of the Bible Belt and destroyed a bunch of cities that were predominantly Southern Baptist? Oh, then they'd probably call it a "trial of faith" instead of "divine wrath."
My pastor preached today about Luke 13, and it stood out to me. I'll post a bit of it here:
1 Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2 Jesus answered, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? 3 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. 4 Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish." - Luke 13:1-5
Anyone who says that this hurricane was a deserved punishment for the people in New Orleans need to heed Jesus' words and stop passing judgement on those people and look at their own lives.
