oi, the devestation there is just orful, ive sent in some moeny to help them out, u guys should to, but really, what can actually be done to save this now lost city? it would really take years to actually rebuild the whole city, and im not sure if its actually worth it. people are looting, and rioting, and robbing people at gun point, its just horrible there. what are your views on this tradgedy, and will you be supporting the disaster relif fund?

That's a good idea. I'm gonna look at some charities right now to help with disaster relief.

I'd have to say that rebuilding New Orleans is worth it, Choco-whatever Hot Guy. Looting always happens in the wake of widespread tragedy.

My heart goes out to the survivors, and I plan on donating some money to a relief fund. I'm sure my church will take a special collection for the victims.

If you'd like to help with the disaster relief, here's the web site of Lutheran World Relief.

Here's the LCMS page, as well.

Also, I'm in the Southern District of the LCMS, and our HQ is in New Orleans. Some of our people have sustained heavy damage, including our district president, whose house was flooded. I also have a cousin who lives south of Lake Pontchartrain and his family is without food right now.

And just on a personal note, here in the Delta, we're experiencing a gas shortage. Most of Greenville's gas comes from the coast, and other neighboring towns are being pumped dry because of our need. Heck, I couldn't even get gas in Cleveland yesterday because all the pumps were jam packed. I've got just enough gas to get me back to Cleveland tomorrow morning, but unless I can get some soon, I'm gonna be dead in the water...er...road. Whatever. I'm sure that NO's needs are far greater. I'm just saying that we're feeling the effects of Katrina, too.

I will support the relief fund for New Orleans. I can guarantee two things. First, this is the cleanest the French Quarter has been in years. Second, New Orleans will have everything cleaned up and repaired by Mardi Gras.

Are you insane? The city is underwater. All of the city is full of mud, there is no electricity, they're talking about demolishing the Superdome, rather than trying to clean it because it's so unsanitary, and thousands of people have died.

Easy Jitka, It's called sarcasm, I specialize in it. I know how bad the situation is down in New Orleans, but I also know that humor is good for times like this because it helps people feel better. A little laughter can go a long way. Remember, laughter is the best medicine.

Not to mention people are swimming in fecal matter.

But, it really does suck that a city that big got hit by a Hurricane this strong.

Yeah, seawater and raw sewage will not give you Evian. The reason that New Orleans is flooded is becase of it's elevation. The City of New Orleans lies on a Delta plane between Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River, and is below sea level. It's not like Miami which lies on sand and is above sea level. That's why Miami is never flooded during after a hurricane.

That, and the fact that New Orleans pretty much survived the storm without a lot of damage... Houses were damaged and such, but, for the most part, it looked a lot better than it should have, given the fact it took a hit from a Category 4 hurricane.. It wasn't until Tuesday morning, when the levees broke (I'm sorry, but everytime I hear that I think of Led Zeppelin), that the REAL problems began.. Shops and bars in the French Quarter were actually open and operating Tuesday morning...

Why do some people think New Orleans diserves it? Is it cause most people there are black? Cause if that's so, then those people are R-A-C-I-S-T. I've noticed the news is probably racist, for example: Black Family "They're looting", White family "They're looking for food". Hmmm... the News is very focused on race. Some news company has to be reading this. I just have a sense of presence on the forum, from someone who's not a member...

I never heard anything about how New Orleans deserved it based on race, but I did hear some extremist Christian site talking about how they deserved it because they were about to hold a gay festival. Yes, I'm sure God chose to punish an entire city, despite the whole "If there are only ten good people, I will spare the city on their behalf," thing.

It seems everybody they interview in white and is on some form of advanced technology, but everyone that they show that is devastated is black. Yeah, something has to be wrong.

I'm not really seein it..
but that's just me.

This post strikes me as flamebait, but I'm not going to say that it is..

On a toastpaint:
Satellite pics from Gloabal Security
and aerial recon from NOAA
The "before" pics on Global Security seem to be visual scans (although they could be classified (sorted and colored, not the top secret kind of "classified") near IR), but the "after" ones all seem to be grayscaled near IR or mid IR...

edit: After looking at the GlobalSecurity ones, some of the before and after are visual range scans..

The thing that should strike you when you see the aerial photos from NASA is how many homes in New Orleans are otherwise intact.. Some are gone, but a lot are still in good shape, minus the flooding, meaning that, without the flooding, the owners might not have lost them.. They're pretty much a 100% loss now, though.

I think that site needs to shut up.

I don't see this hurricane as "divine wrath" or anything of the sort, merely an effect of the weather patterns, nothing more. We live in a cursed world, and as such, natural disasters are going to happen, regardless of morality or lack thereof.

What if Katrina had ended up hitting Georgia or some other state in the heart of the Bible Belt and destroyed a bunch of cities that were predominantly Southern Baptist? Oh, then they'd probably call it a "trial of faith" instead of "divine wrath."

My pastor preached today about Luke 13, and it stood out to me. I'll post a bit of it here:

1 Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2 Jesus answered, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? 3 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. 4 Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish." - Luke 13:1-5

Anyone who says that this hurricane was a deserved punishment for the people in New Orleans need to heed Jesus' words and stop passing judgement on those people and look at their own lives.

Good point, kaemmerite. Not only that, but Mississippi was hit pretty hard, and I think some people would argue that it's part of the "Bible Belt"...so there goes the God-smiting theory. I still haven't heard from a friend of mine who lives there...

Whoever said New O. "deserved" this because of "debauchery" shouldn't call themselves Christian. Even if God had decided to do this out of wrath, it's HIS judgement call to make, and NOT ours. (Though, I'm pretty sure this was just a horrible unfortunate disaster, and not God going on a rampage.) Or maybe this is even a test of OTHER Christians to see who will help their brothers and sisters in their time of need.
