Ok, being a loyal true-blue and white Penn State student, I love to watch the sports here, not just football, either. I'm also a huge Philly fan, if you don't know (but not one of those obnoxious ones). But I have noticed a disturbing trend of recent with fans, all across the sports spectrum. Cursing, throwing objects at each other, drunk misconduct...I've seen more of it the past three years or so, while working concessions for the games and meets at PSU. It's always happened (trust me, I've been to more than one Philly sporting event...we aren't too good with that...) but I've never been to a sporting event when it's gotten out of hand. Yet...

This past weekend when PSU played against Purdue, I was selling pretzels when an older (and very drunk)alumnus threatened to strike a couple nearby who was trying to tell him to calm down when he would overreact to the game. He was forced out violently. I was even pushed and punched by the alumni when I got in their way of viewing a play. The thing was...they were sitting down, and I was walking up and down the stairs. Maybe if they were standing to support the team, they wouldn't have that problem! Anywho, that's just the small things that have happened at games...and most of the problems I've encountered have been exclusive to the alumni section. Also, look at the incident this past Sunday when a man rushed the Packers game, or when that middle-aged man punched the umpire two years ago, or when (MHG might remember) a Philly hockey fan got in a fight with a Leaf's player while he was in the box.

The fact is that it isn't younger people causing these problems. Is it just me, or are middle-aged people just going insane when it comes to sports? (Alcohol just might be a problem as well.......)

EDIT: Open to discussion about being good fans as well, and what that means.

Well, that really ought to be past-tense. People have been dangerously fanatical about sports for as long as sports have existed. I don't think it's gotten worse--it's always been shamefully bad--though perhaps it does wax and wane.

I AM NOT GOING INSANE!!

*hits DanBo with FCOT+3*

*hits Jones with FCOT+3 for good measure*

*hits EVERYBODY with FCOT+3*

That'll learn you whippersnappers! Call me insane!

Seriously, I can certainly understand your concern about insane sports fanatics. I've never been that fanatical about sports myself, but I know some guys from Texas, and MAN, you want to talk about insane! This one guy I know named Kris, whenever he was watching a game, you could hear him clear on the other side of campus! And I'm not exaggerating, either.

Irish sports fans now hate the All Blacks, offically. Thsi began when two of their players spearheaded the Irish captian of the Lions team, Brian O'Driscoll. (The Lions are a collection of English, Wales, Scottish and Irish players - had they spearheaded an English player, I don't think there would be as much of a problem.)

O'Driscoll said he's forgiven the players, even though he was out of the game for some months. But some sports fans have said that they will not welcome the All Blacks when they come to Ireland - in whatever form that might take. Even the police have said that they're going to be viligant for fanatical fans when the All Blacks come to Ireland.

The hilarious thing is that rugby isn't particularly popular here. But when it comes to finding a common object of hatred..... tsk......

Don't the Irish know all that is going to do is make the All Blacks play better. :p

You want to talk fanaticism, let's go to high school sports. As some of you know I went to a Catholic school, we had a huge basketball rivalry with another Catholic school that was across the city. We dispise the other school, and they feel the same about us. We have had fights on the court and in the stands. It is a given that somewhere during the course of the game that there will be a fight somewhere in the gymnasium

...and I thought that only happened at the redneck high school I went to..
We had 2 or 3 big rivalries. The biggest one was kinda of strange. It was a basketball only rivalry. The football games were pretty peaceful. Most of the time, there would be Paintsville people at Prestonsburg parties and vice versa. For whatever reason, though, come basketball season, the friendship was gone. The were a couple of games where they only allowed players, coaches, and officials in the gym. At one point we were totally banned from playing each other except when we had to play each other in post season.
It was pretty bad. One year, I think almost everyone in the gym was either in a fight or trying to break up one. It was nuts.

Our other rivalries were usually just a war of words (and one rival, in particular, gave us toooo many chances to make fun of them). Granted, we went overboard, but it got into their heads, and, when you play angry, you don't play as well.

Yep, my high school basketball team was like that. We had a crosstown rivalry with Coatesville High School, home to many NBA players including Rip Hamilton. It was always a close game every contest, and almost every year, vandalism, violence and swearing followed. It was intense, so I never stepped foot in a Downingtown-Coatesville bball game. Is basketball a big source of this type of fanaticism because the people are so close to the players?

I went to the last Penn State game, and I saw some guy punch two Penn State fans after Wisconsin lost. People are taking sports, like celebraties, way too seriously.

Where the heck did you get Sister Didymus from? Didy is a dude.

You want to talk about Fanatical fans, lets talk about Cubs and Red Sox fans. No matter how bad their seasons went, they stood by their team. I have never ever seen a Sox or Cubs game be anything but standing room only.
