I've heard alot about this religion, but most of what I heard was "OMFG TOM CRUISE AND JOHN TRAVOLTA ARE SCIENTOLOGISTS!!!1" and jokes about tom cruise ie: "SCIENTOLOGY GOOD! PSYCHIATRY BAD! KATIE HOLMES GOOD!"

But now I wanna get serious, what is this "Scientology", how is it different from other religions, why should I convert, why shouldnt I convert, stuff like that.

any info is greatly appreciated :)

It's an inaccurate assumption that all beliefs want you to "convert" as some are actually smart enough to recognise that belief is something in someone's soul and not something that can be bought and sold with potentially empty promsies.

Though I will admit to being pretty ignorant on the specifics of Scientology(though I presume most can guess the basic premise of it being an "applied" religion). I'd like to hear it explained too.

Finally! my chance to explain it!

please note, This is what scientologist really belive!

2 million years ago, an evil leader named Xanu who ruled over a planet lightyears away from earth, though his planet was overpopulated, so he wrote up all of the Useless alien races and froze them and placed them on Space Ships that looked like BC-8's except with rocket jets on them, and he flew all of them accross space to the planet earth where life was just begining to form, he stacked up all of the frozen bodies on the volcanos on Hawaii, and blew them up with Hydrogen bombs. the Souls of the aliens were rising up into the atmosphere where Xanu set up soul catching devices, he cought every soul and took them to the SUPER 3D PICTURE THEATRE that he set up on earth and forced them to watch Movies of Fake Religions for 33 days, then he released the souls back to earth where they found their ways into the unitelegent Neanderthal boddies, and Religion was born.....

Thats exactly what scientologists belive, it has nothing to do with Science. L Ron Hubbard said one day that he could make a Religion Based on total BS, and get rich and famouse for it.

Wikipedia wrote:
The term Scientology is a trademark of the Religious Technology Center, which licenses its use and the copyrighted works of Hubbard to the controversial Church of Scientology. The Church presents itself as a religious non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging development of the human spirit, and providing counseling and rehabilitation programs as an alternative to psychiatry, which Scientologists believe is a barbaric and corrupt profession. Church spokespeople attest that Hubbard's teachings (called "technology" or "tech" in Scientology terminology) have freed them from addictions, depression, learning disabilities, mental illness and other problems.

That's what the wiki has to say about it. Although it is a bit more complicated if you read the whole artical.

Well, I can see how some could go for it, but I doubt scientology is going to take the world by storm any time soon.

Funny you'd say that... I was just trying to figure out what the southpark kids would say in this situation. They always know what the deal is.

All I have to say is that the reason celebs like it is because of its allure and seemingly...explanable...background.

Also it makes them a lot of money if they sponser the religion....and allows for the free use of drugs!

Prooty much, that's it. Oh because and Tom Cruise is insane.

Is Dianetics the "bible" of Scientology?

I may check a copy out of the library and read it, just to see what the whole Scientology is all about.

Is it a completely new religion (by new, I mean is it "original in its beliefs) or is it just a "remix" of an existing religion, like Kaballah?

I think that sums up almost everyone's thoughts on it on here. Alot of the stuff in scientology seems...crazy.

But then again christians worship a 2000 year old carpenter.

That's true, but, not only was Jesus a carpenter, he was a carpenter's son. He kept true to the family business!!!

While, I admit, scientology seems a bit off the deep end, I suppose that, to some, Christianity seems a little off the deep end, as does Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, and the various other religions of the world.

Although I seriously, doubt that reading Dianetics is going to change my views on Christianity, or on life in general, I think I'm gonna give it a read, just to see what this whole Scientology thing is all about. That South Park episode has really peaked my interest. Surely it can't be as wacky as they say it is, can it?

This stuff makes sense. I don't really call it a relegion, because it has no gods or spiritul type things. That episode of southpark potrayed it well.

"Now I'm in the closet!"

wow it kinda seems like a plot of some kind of science-fiction film plot. And whoever mentioned the 2000 year old carpenter I'd like to add that he lived at home and was a virgin, by today's standards Jesus was a lame-ass

It was just a joke man. I think the people on here are smart enough to realize that.

But I'll admit it was a little much.

Even L. Ron Hubbard said not to take Scientology as a religion. Plus, a lot of the technology that was presented in his abstract of Xenu's space plane and such were resemblent to the technology of the era which he wrote it.

I am all for spiritual discovery and varying religions, but Scientology is the biggest crock of BS I've ever seen!

The sad thing is that South Park didn't need to make a joke to present the origin of Scientology...

Scientology is not a religion.

*It was created by L. Ron Hubbard to prove he could create a religious following
*To become saved in the eyes of the Church of Scientology, you must spend thousands of dollars on treatments
*You do not learn about the aliens and Xenu until you have already paid thousands of dollars
*Anyone who rejects the teachings after learning them is considered an enemy and is persecuted by the believers

Scientology, therefore, is a cult. I also recommend you check out http://www.xenu.net for info, much of which comes from ex-Scientologists.

DF - I thought I just said that it wasnt...? But hey, thanks for expanding on it. All that stuff you said is true.

Operation Clambake. I've been to that site before. Very credible and an all around good site. Good thing to link for this subject.

Kaballah isn't a remix of an existing religion; it's the mystical, "hidden" side of the teachings of Judaism. some people have decided to divorce it from the moral teachings of the religion and pass it off as its own thing in a cynical ploy to make a buck, and it's been very successful among dumbass celebrities and desperate people who want to feel good about themselves but don't actually want to have to do anything to become good people. so this thing calling itself Kaballah sells you some red string or a bottle of water for $30, and you can feel spiritual.

like Scientology, it's a scam. the only thing is that it's co-opted the name of something very serious and real, and is dragging it through the mud.

Scientology = Cult - Syanide Punch + Money

It really amazes me that people belive this stuff. Hubbard truly was a comedic genius. Well, in my sick, twisted point of view anyways :p
