Say what? When Church and State intertwine, usually everyone except the Church comes out the losing end. Ask any Iranian moderate. For that matter, ask my 1930's/40's-born parents what kind of unrestrained, destructive meddling the Church got up to in the Ireland of their generation.

Aaaaaand that's why 1973 was the year Ireland finally became a free, modern state.

SR was referring to trends within the US. And in the US, whenever there is any intermingling between religion and politics, religion always gets shafted. Just ask any high school valedictorian who ever wanted to thank God as a part of his speech whether or not his or her religion is respected. Ask any high schooler who ever wanted to discuss his religion with his fellow students, or pray with them before class. Maybe things are different in your country, but then again, religion in the US isn't dominated by gun-toting car-bombing terrorists.

i suppose in order to sort of toastpaint this away from church/state issues, i'll throw in a few cents.

i like what zeno had to say. i think that an overwhelming number of people who argue over gay marriage have nothing to do with it. if homosexuals were allowed to marry, people wouldn't wake up the next morning across america and be like: "holy crap, i think i just heard a gay person get married! to the batcave!" naw, people would probably never notice if it just sort of happened, and it wouldn't change most people's lives.

i've heard a lot of arguments for and against the issue and my position just kind of falls in good old empathy and morals: if i were homosexual, i would not want other people to treat me differently or exclude me over something that i didn't even pick. that and it doesn't hurt me if people of the same sex are allowed to marry.

Sorry to step on your toastpaint, Putin, but I've got to deal with a situation here.....



Um, what? Didymus - you'd better not be talking about the Northern Ireland conflict, or I will start screaming. Because as someone of your age and education should know, the Northern Ireland conflict is a turf war, NOT a religious war. I'll repeat that:

NORTHERN IRELAND CONFLICT = TURF WAR =/= RELIGIOUS WAR

On the other points: If that's what Sree meant, fair enough. Though you and I are working from different definitions of what "Church/State intertwining" is.

I can't tell if he's talking about the Northern Irish troubles or if that was a poorly worded reference to Islamic terrorism. If it was the former that was definitely a flame, and I'll anticipate action from the mods.

As for gay marriage, all for it. At the very least, civil unions granting power of attorney, hospital visitation rights, and so forth.

To clear the air, I wasn't talking about anything in particular. My general opinion (and reason I try to keep the Church and the State seperate) is that, whenever the two intertwine, the Church gets blame.

I wouldn't over-react to this or what Dids said. I seriously doubt he'd try to flame anyone.
