In case you haven't heard, Pat Robertson recently made some rather idiotic comments on Ariel Sharon's recent medical crisis. In a nutshell, Robertson is claiming Sharon's health problems are God's punishment for "dividing the land of Israel."

In answer to Robertson, there's a well-written and insightful open letter popping up on several of the Evangelical blogs I read. The letter wasn't written in direct response to Robertson's recent statement -- in fact, it was written in 2002 -- but it's contents are surprisingly relevant. I've read it a few times and agree with it whole-heartedly.

It should go without saying that Robertson doesn't speak for all Christians when he makes these kind of comments, but this letter really explains what the position of Christians should be with regard to events in Israel. It also states clearly why Robertson and those who agree with him are wrong in their thinking and stand in oposition to the clear statements of the Bible with regard to this issue.

Hat tip to Between Two Worlds and Theologica.

All right Pat Robertson needs to die, who's with me?

I don't know about you but I think God would like seeing peace in the Holy Land. So if anything he would reward Sharon for doing this.

I wouldn't go that far.. We need to keep him around, purely for entertainment value.

I think the fact that Christian leaders, AND THE WHITE HOUSE, are distancing themselves from him are proof of how Christians really feel about him.

I hate the fact that The 700 Club is on right after Whose Line is it Anyway?

Anyway, yeah, this guy is kinda not right in the head. If he were any more right wing, he'd fall off the plane. But he's not any right wing, he's that odd insane right wing.

My thoughts on Robertson and his comments, expressed the way that only a YTMND could do so..

I'm just glad there haven't been any "see, all Christians are stupid bigots" people responding to the thread...

Pat Robertson scares me. I mean, I totally support his rights to say his crazy stuff, even though I think he's full of crap.

Pat Robertson: Proof that free speech doesn't have to be intelligent speech.

This last thing probably erased most of the credibility he has left.

Wait, he still had credibility?

I thought it had been confirmed in like the 80's that he was a money-hungry lunatic with a TV show.

I got an idea.

How about pull a commando raid, capture Pat Robertson, sedate him, and take him to a tatoo shop to get a warning label put on his forehead saying this:

"IMPORTANT NOTICE--READ BEFORE VIEWING

THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THIS PERSON DO NOT REFLECT THOSE OF OTHER CHRISTIANS
"

Preferrably with a day-glo orange bordering that also glows in the dark.

Seriously. Between his comments about the town of Dover, Sharon, the whole assassination bit ... it's sad how this guy is thought of as the voice of Christianity, or at least American Christianity (judging from what What's Her Face said some time ago).

The cynic in me says that the views he expresses also don't represent his own actual viewpoints and he just knows what to say to get attention, fame, and money.

Actually, I don't even know if that's the cynic in me. It could just be the optimist that believes that nobody could actually be that stupid.

Pat Robertson is an idiotic fool who doesn't know when to shut his mouth. He needs to realize that he basically is an extremist and know real christian agrees with his views.

OK, when doesn't he make idiotic comments? He seems to gain more enemies each time he says something.

Whatever happened to Falwell? Seriously, I remember him saying some outrageous things, but I don't ever remember him being a magnet for controversy like Robertson has become.

That's because Falwell isn't quite as senile as Ol' Pat, and knows, for the most part, when to keep his mouth shut, unless he's off blaming 9/11 on feminists.

But he's a whole other enchilada.

If Robertson wants to get mad about that land being cut up, he shoulda taken it up with the UN General Assembly in 1947.

Robertson is a prime example why people think Americans, and especially
Christian Americans are nuts, someone needs to thwomp that guy some sense.

This seems to be a new tactic of Ol' Pat's. He'll say something so amazingly moronic that people can't believe he actually said it, then recant it two days later.

The thing is, we all know that none of his opinions have changed. He says things to get his twisted message out, then apologizes and thinks it'll make everything better.

Someone needs to tell Mr. Pat that sometimes sorry doesn't cut it. He needs to retire.

If you know what I mean.

Pat Robertson is just so stupid, callous, and out of touch with reality that it's really more pathetic than anything else...I almost pity him. Almost. As I already stated in another thread, I think mostly people like Mr. Robertson are just out to self-aggrandize themselves to fill some sort of innate urge to be "better" than others. It's funny how a man so old has yet to grow up.

I've always thought of the man as more of an entertainer. He represents his own views that started from the Good Book and went through his own crazy filter and out forth from his mouth.

I would buy a Pat Robertson Crazy Filter.

"God is mad at America. He's sending hurricane after hurricane after hurricane." -N.O. Mayor Ray Nagin...
Dear God, Robertson's dementia is spreading...

Combine that with the whole "chocolate New Orleans" thing, and I think Pat Robertson my have some competition at the door of the nut house..

I agree with you whole heartedly on both counts. Pat Robertson never has any idea what he is talking about. He just wants money.

Wasn't that supposed to be one of the things the antichrist is going to do, to bring peace to the holy land, then to the entire world?

No, I'm not saying Sharon is the antichrist (nor do I even think he's close)..

He is supposed to do that, but a little thing I like to call Armeggedon breaks out.
