It dawned on me during church service today...I want to start a nightclub-witnessing ministry here in Denver!

Back in October, I had my first club experience; it was at the Hot IQs show at the Larimer Lounge. For most of the night, I was scared and alone. Granted, I was 16 at the time, so I probably shouldn't have gone out in the first place.

But I'd love to get about 10 to 20 people (or more!) together a couple nights per week & have pairs of people go to clubs around downtown, and look for people who are sad, lonely, or just aren't having a good time. We could talk to people, pray for them, arrange rides home. We would be identified by yellow glowstick crosses or E-Lites, so if the ministry got going, some people would know to look for the guys wearing the glowing crosses. Eventually, though, I'd love to get one of those cross E-Shirts, though.

And the name for this ministry?

Glow: God's Love Over the World. To the ravers it means "glowstick", while for churchgoers it means God's light glowing.

I really want to serve Christ here in Denver; please pray for me. I want to see where this could go.

you'd probably get your butt kicked. i would want to kick your butt if you started proselytizing at me at a club. i think you should stick to preaching to the converted. it's not like nobody's heard of Christianity before; they know you're there, if they feel like they're interested. going to clubs to recruit people is just obnoxious.

The idea is not to recruit people; it's just to minister to people in nightclubs. It doesn't even have to be witnessing at all; could be just someone to talk to, or get a ride from if that person's had too much to drink.

that's fine, but if you don't have an ulterior motive you should leave Jesus out of it and just do it to be nice.

My ulterior motive would be making sure people feel safe and not lonely when they go out to clubs at night. Besides, I wanna try to do something meaningful with my faith, instead of going through the motions at church every week.

that's great, just leave the "witnessing" part at home. i know that if i was depressed at a club and i saw someone with a giant glowing cross around their neck, i would run the other way. it would be worse than getting hugged by a raver.

Well, what if I didn't have the glowing cross? Or anything like that? Just someone to be there.

And it's not like I'm a Jehovah's Witness or anything.

someone to be there would be nice and socially conscious, i guess. as long as you're not pushy and not preachy and not trying to convert anyone but just to help people.

and i don't see much difference between the J's Witnesses and any other sort of prosylitizing organization, personally. they're all pretty much the same, and they're all obnoxious. sometimes fun to debate with, if i'm in the mood, but when i'm not, just annoying.

Hey, how come you weren't paying attention to the service? :p Joking.

I like the idea - I heard of a similar project when I was living in Belfast, organised partly by the community and the police. Arranging buses home for women and such, keeping an eye on drug-dealers at clubs.

But I'd very careful - you'd never know when you'd meet a drunk or junkie who'd slash you for looking at them.

actually, Jehovas Witnesses are the Closest Thing to Real Christians and Catholics than Most Christians and Catholics.

As for this idea...err.....its....O.K..... but what if you run into an Athiest, or a Church of Satan Member? or a Jewish Person? or someone of other religions? personally, i think that Clubs are for people to go dancing and have fun, and ya know, buy a chick a drink, Dance with her, and see what comes next. not a place for Christ.

That' a great idea, Ian! I'll definitely be praying for you in this ministry. Just be careful, though, as WHF said. Some people can get kind of rowdy when they've had too much to drink.

Lots of things come next. Rape, murder, assault...That's where Christ comes in.

And thankies, Dougie.

Or just plain morals. Believe it or not, it IS possible to be a moral person without being Christian, or having those morals in the name of Christ or anything. I'm not Christian, but I certainly don't believe that rape, murder, or assault are good ideas, by any means.

The whole idea just seems to be appealing to an incredibly small niche of people (those who can be seen as being miserable in nightclubs, when the vast majority of time they wouldn't be there anyway), and it seems to have an incredible potential for annoyance. I mean, it doesn't seem like you really want to do anything WRONG, but you're relying on some very particular judgements that may be incorrect.

Well, I've been talking about this on a couple other forums, and one guy suggested calling it "Glow" instead:
Quote:
To the raver kiddies, it could mean glowstick...To the church-goers, it could mean God's light glowing. Right there you've caught the interest of a wider variety of people
I think I will call it Glow!

Christians believe in salvation for those who don't follow the word of God...

You disgust me. Don't ever speak again.

Not only that, but you're [being] pretty ignorant-whether or not somewhere is a place for Christ is based on religious beliefs, not a specific location. If you're Christian, you consider everything a place for Christ (which is a huge understatement by Christian standards, right, Ian?), and if you're not Christian, than you don't. You prove yourself terribly ignorant of the beliefs of others by passing them off because you'd like to justify your immorality.

Thank you, Sui. The world is our "Church" and every Christian is a disciple.

Cobalt: You just do not want to be told that you're wrong. I don't think that you realize that though many have heard about Christianity, but not everyone knows what it is really about, which is going to the unsaved, and loving therm unconditionally. Christianity is about a relationship, not do's and don'ts. Some people are looking for answers in all the wrong places, and Christ is that answer to their questions.

what an ignorant, fascist thing to say. if you're disgusted by the idea that people go to clubs to dance and drink and often meet people with whom to have sex, then you should go live on a planet where that's not the case. if you're offended by Choc-O giving you an accurate idea of why people go to clubs, then YOU are the one who should get out of this forum and never speak again. how dare you tell Choc-O to shut up because of your own unwillingness to accept that you live in the real world, where not everyone shares your ideals.

But most of the time, people need to be told that they're wrong. Otherwise, they'll remain wrong.

yeah, fair enough. i definitely tell people that they're wrong when i think that they are. nobody ever likes to hear it, though. and i accept when other people think that i am wrong, but i always have good reasons for believing the things that i believe and it's up to the person who disagrees with me to convince me why their way is better.

Um, but what Choco said was not what the point of this idea was at all.

Why do I always have to play peacekeeper? If you guys want to flame each other, do it through PM's.

Ian what you are talking about may not be a bad idea. The Priest from my old High School used to do what he call "Christ on Tap". What he would do was to go around to different bars and preach the Good News. He liked to do that, but he stopped because teaching Senior religion and Latin took up most of his time.

I was an Un-religious heathen before Christ..

The preacher at my church was a bartender/DJ at a strip club...

Spirituality is like NASCAR... It's not where you start, it's where you finish.

The way you said that sounds like Tim Wilson's "First Baptist Bar and Grill"..

As far as a "house of sin", it seems like those places would need religion more than the house of the lord.. Doesn't it?
