I thought this would be an interesting discussion to have, as it is an interesting topic.

I once saw someone speak in tongues, way back in the summer of 2003. I was on a church mission trip to Bramwell, WV. There, we met up with a few other church groups, including an evangelical group from New York, I believe. Anyway, the group I was in was given the task of stripping and repainting the house of an elderly woman. One day, her grandson arrived, and he had a chat with some of the evangelical Christians. At one point, he mentioned that he had heart disease and liver problems, and two of the girls asked him if he would like to pray with them. So, one of the girls put her hands on his chest and they began praying. After about 15 seconds or so, she began speaking in tongues. What does it sound like? Well, from what I've heard it varies depending on native language, but the closest thing I could aproximate it to was Hebrew, or something like it. Anyway, while the first girl was speaking in tongues, there was another girl next to her speaking in ordinary english. My guess is that she was translating or something.

I mean, um, er...well, not being Christian, I obviously have some doubts as to the validity of this. I assume some people are going to do it just as a show--totally faking it just to impress some people. (And of course, what would be much worse is if anyone falsified it to try to get other people to convert to their religion.) Some of it may be some sort of weird mental disorder that the invididual carries, whether biological or psychological. Could some of it be legitimate? I wouldn't rule it out. I just...don't have enough experience or knowledge on the subject to make any sort of fair or objective opinion.

On one hand, I tend to think that the "speaking in tongues" in biblical days was meant primarily to be a reversal of the curse of Babel (the gift of language confounded, then restored on Pentecost). I note that the text says that the listeners heard them speaking in their own native languages. Somehow, the apostles were gifted with the ability to communicate with people who did not understand Aramaic, the common language of Jerusalem at the time.

From what I've observed, most modern charismatics who employ "speaking in tongues" use it mainly as a sort of prayer language. I'm not sure Scripture really supports that, but who am I to argue with the ways in which God works in their lives? I suspect it works for them the same way actually using Greek or Latin sometimes works for me when I listen to sacred classical music.

Now, when they start talking about "Baptism of the Holy Spirit" as though it were something separate and greater than the sacrament of Holy Baptism, then I have a problem. According to Scripture, the gift of tongues does not make you a holier person than someone without it. If you think that, then it's time for the sackcloth and ashes.

I dunno, I don't think she was faking it, and I don't think my brother (who says he spoke in tongues during the same mission trip) was either. At the end of the trip, my brother spoke with the rest of the group about his experience, and there was an immediate and negative reaction towards him from almost everyone. I don't know all the details, as I didn't hear the entire one-sided discussion, but my brother was pretty mad at them when it was over.

Uh, well, you should really try to find out what language it is. Tongues is a great gift, if you have it. You seem to be able to speak a certain language perfectly, even though you haven't even heard about it. As long as it is in the name of the Lord I think.
