His brother Raul is taking over until Fidel recovers from surgery. Do you think he will step down perminately?

Officially, he "temporarily" stepped down.

And I don't know... what's Raul like? I've never even heard of him until today.

I don't know lots about Cuba
Does it follow Communist philosophy?
What kind of A leader Was Fidel Castro?
I haven't been following closely.
Please clear up.

Yeah, it's the only old-style communist country in the western hemisphere. Fidel Castro's been in charge there for something like 47 years and he's almost 80. He runs your typical communist government: no freedom to leave the country or criticize, extremely controlled economy, lots of poverty, tho I've heard their medical and educational systems might be OK (woohoo, a slightly-gilded cage!) Apparently the CIA's tried to kill him a couple of times.

He almost caused the end of the world when he let Soviet Russia put nuclear weapons in Cuba in 1962. Cuba being 90 miles or something from Florida, Kennedy wasn't too happy. Both sides had their fingers on the button until the Russians finally took the nukes out of Cuba.

And we had to take our nukes out of Turkey as well.

To be honest though, I think the step down will only be temporary, but when he recovers, he'll take back his position. But after that, he'll start looking for a successor.

Ah, the Cuban Missile Crisis! I could go on and on, since I had to do a rather large report on it in school. But I will digress and tend to the issue at hand.

No way Castro will step down permanently. And no way will Cuba change with his brother in charge. I'm sure he's still running it from the shadows.

Apparently Raul runs the Cuban military, and he's even meaner than his brother. So, not great news.

Not only will Castro permanentley step down, he'll die. All I can say to that is, "good riddance."

Raul will step up, and bring change to the Cuban government, and it will be a turn for the better for Cuban society.

I know it sounds mean, but I've been waiting for this guy to die since I was 2. Everyone in my family hates Fidel, and really, they have every right to. They were oppressed by his government, and have every right to be angry with him.

I don't want you to get your hopes up over that happening. I've heard that Raul will just bring more of the same. Hopefully, I'm wrong, though.

Man, tonight's Daily Show should be great. (Why is it that anytime something newsworthy happens, I immediately begin salivating over how the Daily Show is going to handle it?)

He is almost 80, he hasn't got much longer.

No. Either he will never die, or he will live an incredibly long time. Evil communist scumbags like him always live long lives. That is, unless the U.S. comes in and kicks their a**/blows them up, just like how we blew up the terrorist buttwipe Al-Zarqawi into little bits. But, naturally, they usually lead long lives. 'Tis the sad way of the world, BTG. The sad way of the world, I proclaim. The good die young, and the evil lead long lives; God works in mysterious ways in such.

Dude, Castro is on his last legs. I don't know if you have seen recent pictures of him, but he doesn't look well.

Gravy meant that Castro's condition doesn't look good. If he does die soon, I wonder if there's gonna be a revolt of some kind, like a coup. It could happen.

Everything I've heard about Raul says he's been Fidel's right-hand man since Castro took Cuba over in the first place.

I doubt anything will change if Fidel does die.

Actually it is, Raul is just like Fidel. He is just as ruthless as Fidel. The only difference between Raul and Fidel is that Fidel has more charisma than Raul. Nothing will change until Raul dies, but the news of Fidel stepping down did give Little Havana something to celebrate about yesterday.

I was watching Glen Beck last night, and he refered to this as a drehh rehesal. With this, Fidel might know what will happen when he dies. Will the US try to do something, or will the Cubans try to revolt?

Indeed.I heard the government was polling in Havana. Also, If he's trying to see how we react we are not doing well.

If Castro's so "popular", then why are people leaving his country & getting into America sucessfully?

So you mean to tell me cause some people leave a country means that country's leader is unpopular.I don't like Castro or Communism but really he is popular-in Cuba.

Well, you can't convince everyone that Communism is the way. Why do you think we give Cubans amnesty if they can set foot on our shores?

It's actually because we're capitalist & Cuba's communist. Thus another reason why Cubans come to America.

They already have that. The come all the countries that don't have embargoes on Cuban goods. Which is every country in the world besides the US.

yes, but america is just across the water. For me, Cuba is a huge hassle to get to. For those living in Florida it would be easy.
