I have a question.

Do you pray?

And if you do, why do you do it?

I'll add my comment a little later.

Yeah, I try to at least a few times a day... it's very important in being spiritually healthy and all.

There are different ways I pray, depending on my disposition.

Usually, I like to go to church, just sit, and talk to God. I basically tell him what's on my mind, and listen to the silence.

But when I find it difficult to pray, I will sometimes use a prayer liturgy from the hymnal. That usually helps.

One thing I need to do more of is meditative prayer. That's when you take a passage of Scripture, study it, try to extract what God would have me to understand from reading that passage, then pray according to what I think he wants to show me. This, I find, is the most effective but the hardest to do.

But sometimes I just cry out, especially when I feel hurt or alone. I often find myself lashing out at God in anger. As strange as it may sound, I often argue with God. But once I have vented, I usually find I'm just praying, "God, it hurts! Make it better!"

I pray very rarely, and it's only in times when people I love are in great need, and I can't do anything myself to help them.

No, not yet. Maybe soon. I'm still mad I think.

I used to pray...a lot. I prayed because I felt it was a duty and was theoretically the best thing for me to do. But I learned that even though those are true, praying for those reasons is like building your house on sand. It looks like there's only one reason that lasts: you pray because you love God (even if you're mad at him that second).

I pray three prayers every night before I go to bed.
1. Standard Lord's Prayer
2. "Bless all my friends, all my enemies, and everyone who is in need. Amen." and I believe I may have gotten this from someone on the forum..
3."Dear Lord God, I realize I have failed you, but I accept Christ and I ask his forgiveness. Amen."

I'm going to be perfectly honest with you. It kind of irritates me when you do that. Normally when starting a topic, you want to make your opinions and stances on various things known. But with almost every thread you post in R&P, you ask the people a few questions, but refrain from answering them yourself until later.

Can I ask you why you do that? Why would you bother waiting on posting your own thoughts and opinions? If it's a completely personal issue, don't bother answering. I know I'm going to catch flak for saying this anyway.

Now, to (kinda) remain on topic. I will pray, but I don't do it often. If someone is sick, dying, or has died recently, I will pray for them. Sometimes I'll pray just because, as well. However, it's not a "usual" thing for me by any stretch of the imagination.

I was thinking about this just last night. I've only really prayed about 3 or 4 times in my life. I can only remember one of them, it was about a half a year ago when I prayed for my mom to get better. That happened recently.

I don't just pray whenever, and I don't just pray when there's something worrying me. I only pray for help. I'll pray in the most extreme circumstances, when I feel that there's absolutely nothing anyone can do and God's help is needed. Even if it's somebody else's issue, I sometimes feel that way. I NEVER pray for myself, even if it might be considered important- that just makes me feel selfish.

I only pray very, very rarely. I only do it in Thanksgiving and Christmas meals when I'm at one of my mom's relative's house, and I'll usually pray if I feel very sick. Mostly with bronchitis and the like.

I personally see nothing wrong with praying for yourself. If anything, I've learned that God wants us to pray about things we need. After all, in the Lord's Prayer, does he not encourage us to say, "Give us this day our daily bread"?

Sometimes I need time to think out my thoughts. And other times I'm very nervous of making my comments, so I let them out little by little.

When I made this topic, I was nervous of telling everyone how I prayed, so I kept it silent for a bit of time.

Accually, I'm still feeling nervous about this. But...

I suppose it's time to show myself.

I do pray. I once did it almost every night. It was always to God.

I usually pray in private, in my room late at night. But sometimes I do it with my eyes open instead of closed. It's a curious thing when you do it with your eyes open.

Recently I haven't been praying very much. For some reason I feel very nervous when I try to speak to God. And so...

I need to talk to Didymus.

Sometimes you have to do that... closing your eyes helps keep distractions away, but I have to when praying like, say, while driving down the highway. (It's better to pray when there are no distractions, but sometimes you need to ASAP.)

sometimes. i need to do it more often (Jews are required to pray three times a day -- i'm bad). but it's the best way to nurture a relationship with God, that's the main reason for it.

I need to be way more diligent in my prayer life. I've slacked off alot. Sometimes though I think the best way to talk to god is to talk to him like he's your best bud. Real casual like. Oh, and Didymus, I'm glad I'm not the only one who lashes out at god sometimes.

Heck, even the Psalmists lashed out at God at times. For that matter, what do you think Jesus meant when he said, "My God, why have you abandoned me?" (that is, aside from quoting Psalm 22)

I pray, and very often at that. God likes it when we talk to him, so often it probably feels like a one-way conversation. I try hard to listen and see what he has to say. One never hears a voice explicity, but there's often a tugg at my heart, or a thought or persuasion that pops into my head that I wouldn't have thought of on my own. God likes to work in subtle, yet powerful ways. Prayer is one of the things that helps me get through my day. if I run into trials, a quick "arrow" prayer for guidance can be just what the doctor ordered, and a group prayer can be one of the best forms of comfort that I've found. Plus, it is always nice to let somebody know that you're praying for them. It lets them know that somebody out there cares for them, and isn't willilng to see them go through difficult times alone.

I think I'm going to pray tonight. For added help with an issue in my life. And I'll thank God for all the love and guidance He has given me.

Yes, it's a very rare event.

I usually pray at night when I'm laying down in bed and before we eat dinner. At night, I say:

1. Ordinary prayer (Now I lay me, down to sleep, I pray the Lord, my soul to keep...)
2. I ask God to bless my family, friends, pets, etc.

Before Dinner:

"God is great, God is good. Now I thank him for this food. By His hands, we all are fed, give us Lord this daily bread. Amen."

I'm going have to agree with Jello and Homeschool - I've never prayed before, and I doubt I ever will.

Ah, yes, I forgot about that. My family and I say graces- or, at least, we used to. For the past month or so we haven't. I'll have to start again tomorrow.

Our graces are "Thank you, Lord, for the food we have before us on this day, and that we're all together as a family for good."

The funny thing about that is that for some reason I always have trouble saying it- I say it too fast, I stutter, and I slur my speech. I don't know why that happens. It's really weird.

It may jsut be me, but i think the reason you're mispeaking that prayer is it's change in formality. The first part seems fairly formal, but the second part seems more casual and modern. The two don't seem to fit exactly, and it's a bit tricky to switch between them

That's just a shot in the dark, though. Just what I seemed to notice while reading it.

Anyways, being an athiest, I have never prayed, and I don't plan to. That doesn't mean I'm not thankful for what I have and that I'm blessed to be here*, I just don't feel the need to express it out loud to someone who I don't believe exists. If I ever were to believe that there is a god, I probably still wouldn't pray aloud, I find I can organize my thoughts and "comminucate" better in my own mind, and if God is all-knowing, he'd hear me anyways.

*Not supernaturally, but more... statistically blessed.

I pray, but I'm bad at it. I forget to pray for something or someone all the time, and I, like, forget to pray and stuff. And I say grace, but I'm really bad at that, too. I just say "Lord, we thank you for this food, amen" because if I try to elaborate I mess up and my whole family looks at me like Dick Cheney is dancing in toe-socks on my head. I should pray for better praying habits. :-|

Well Darth, you don't have to pray like a priest, just something simple, such as "Thank you God, who everything that you have given to us" is just as good as any other prayer. As long as you're serious about praying and not just doing it because you have to, then it's all good.

I do pray. A lot of times, I pray when I'm falling asleep, because that's when my mind is least occupied and I can focus on trying to communicate to God. But sometimes, I'll just talk to God, about things I've done, things that are happening to me, things that are happening to others. Alexander, you mentioned praying with your eyes open, and sometimes I do that too. My most common prayer is for understanding and acceptance of His will.

This might sound strange and it's a bit off topic, but I like to practise Yoga (the exercise, not the religion that can go along with it) and part of the idea behind it is to relax your mind and try not to think too much. Well, that's pretty difficult for me to do - my mind usually runs on about 1000 topics at once - so I often use it as a time for meditation to God. I don't think about anything too heavy, (that would defeat the purpose) just general thoughts of praise and worship.
