Do we really need the Blue & Green levels? Even with the many times security has been beefed up since 9/11, Guarded & Low have never been used on a national scale. If these terror plots are foiled, wouldn't we theoretically be at a lower risk because we're "safer"? We're almost guaranteed to have a "significant risk of terror attacks" just because we are America.

I do think there is a sensible reason for why there's always a Yellow or higher day. If we lower our threat level, then our "enemy", whoever it is, may think we're letting our guard down, & may proceed for another "threat to national security".

America has been in a perpetual "state of emergency" for years, since about world war 2. That chart is a meaningless and shallow device. Ditch it.

But we've been relatively safer at some times than others, right?

Well, the chart's only for "terrorist" attack, not for nuclear war. If we can project the chart backwards, it would have probably been green or blue for most of the country's history. It would have been green before '93, then blue from '93 to '98, when it should have become clear that bin Laden was gonna keep trying to blow stuff up and changed to yellow. There was a period between 1991 and 2001 that the vast majority of people didn't perceive the US as being in any danger of attack at all.

As for whether it works or not, it's really just a designation the government makes for itself so it can move around money and supplies according to formulas they make up. If this area is at this color it gets X amount of dollars or plan B goes into effect or whatever. It's just a bureaucratic tool that doesn't affect civilians unless something bad happens.

I don't see the point of the system. I hate it when we put our guard up for the 4th of July and anniversaries of 9/11. These dates mean of no signifigance to the terrorists. I hate that system entirley.

I wonder if that new Bush movie, "Death of a President", will keep the level high.

I saw this map on the web. In the key the green areas are where there are definately no terrorists. The orange might have terrorists. The red definately has terrorists. As a joke the whole map was made orange. The terror alert levels are useless in the same way[/url]

I don't think a movie will change the levels. But if something happens, such as an attempt on the President, or a high gov't official, then there would be a raise the level of security, and people will immediately point there finget at the movie. Everyone needs a scapegoat.

Unfortunately it's human nature to ssek something to blame when things go wrong. That's why politicians are blamed for economic problems even though they don't have as great control as we might like to think.

It serves as a good way to keep a portion of the gullible and ignorant public scared, people who don't know enough to make their own choices are likely to believe someone else who they think does, and if your scared for your safety, your alot more likely to vote for someone who seems to have all the answers to keeping you safe.
