Okay, we all know that theyre have been several school shootings in the past month/week. Many of the shooters have been over 18 and shot at a school they never went to. But none the less, theyre have been too many shootings. I think that Kimreever Gil sort of made a kind of "Call to Arms" and now people have begun to act on it. More gun laws and banning violent video games are not going to solve anything, theyll just put more pressure onto students.

I belive that most of the reasons that kids decide to shoot up their school is because of the Jock Culture and bullying. I suffer bullying all the time in my school, even though its not as harsh as it must have been to make some of the students who shot up their schools. Ive often felt like pulling out a gun and killing my peers, but ive thought about how good my life is and never acted upon it.

Anyways, what are your thoughts on the recent shootings at school accross the country?

I think bullying far overshadows the "jock" issue at schools, but I completely agree with you, COLA. I also have been a victim of bullying for many years.

So what do we do? I hate to use a cliché, but can't we all just get along? Seriously...find a new friend from a "different" circle than you are. It might just help end bullying at your school, at least.

The thing is with some of the recent shootings, they weren't cliq related. The one in Penn was a random spree, possibly brought on by a long surpressed sexual tension, along with a severe depression. We're talking about this now in all of my Crininal Justice classes.

There was a shot fired at a school nearby here, and they had a lockdown (that's all I heard). I was wondering if there have been more in the past month or something.

Well, unforunately, you're mind is playing tricks on you. Many noises that you wouldn't think twice before now scare you, because you think about what it might be.

On the bullying issue, I used to be bullied a lot. Now I wasn't physically assulted, but I had alot of verbal harrasment. It caused pretty bad insecurity problems, but eventually I learned to ignore it and treat it like the bullhonky that it is. Thats the way to deal with verbal bullies, for the physical ones I'd say you need to go to a teacher or adult of somekind.

But as far as school shootings go, I have no idea why they do it, exept that they are probably very sad individuals.

It's terrible, all of it.

Just the other day, we had a lockdown drill at my school--something I've never participated in before. (We spent most of it hiding under the tables and talking about how Michael Jackson was probably the offender, we had the facilities to last us a while, and how if we ran out of food we'd have to resort to cannibalism.) It was, of course, related to the rash of school shootings.

Hopefully this won't lead to more profiling, either. For example, my friend Robynne always wears a black trenchcoat--and due to Columbine and other shootings, those are irreversibly linked with school shootings. But she's not the type to shoot up a school--she's this complete and utter geek (in a good way) who enjoys musicals and the works of Joss Whedon. Definitely not someone who'd do something like that. But people do stereotype, and as unlikely as it is, I sometimes worry that people will get suspicious of her. Or me, for that matter--the girl with the huge platform boots and cynical disposition who doesn't like her peers. You all know that I'd never shoot up a school, but rumors fly about me all the time...I can only hope there won't be a rumor about this.

End rant.

Pssh. We had 3 lockdowns last year. One was the day before the lockdown drill (some old guy was walking around the neighborhood with a knife or something), the second was the actual drill, and the 3rd was the day after the drill; there were gunshots fired at the Qdoba restaurant just down the block.

And we've had 2 lockdowns so far this year, too.

Wow. Just...wow.

It's sorta funny, considering that Santa Cruz was once called the Serial Killer Capital of the World, that we've never had any incidents like that at any of my schools...

I know I have said this before but it is worth saying now.

My school was so stupid with their Lockdown procedure. They made one in response to the 9/11 attacks. They were doing this to try and prevent any terrorist from hurting us. (Yeah right, what pathetic excuse for a terrorist is going to attack a small Catholic School in a minor city?) For the school to go in to Lockdown mode we had a secret password(shh! It's a secret) for it. That password was "The pep rally has been cancelled." (Well let's hope the terrorist isn't a fan of pep rallies, or we would be screwed  ) The last thing we had was were to wear picture ID cards. If we forgot out ID card we had to go down to the office and get a little slip that we had to write our name on. This was alos for the faculty too. On the substitute name tag, it said whether we were a student or a teacher. I wrote under student, terrorist. So this is how my replacement name tag went

Bishop Ludden Jr./Sr. High School

Name
Chris Zysk

STUDENT
Terrorist

My schools lockdown procedures are bull also. Whenever theyres a bomb threat, they come on the intercom and say "Code Yellow, go to the Football field".
So everyone is dragged out of class and has to walk to the football field while the teachers and security guards go and search every room, bathroom, and desk and table. The first bomb threat of each year is always the longest because they take the time to check every locker and crevice, and the roof, and even locked places.
Now, the way i see it, if a shooter wanted to shoot up the school, what they would do is position themselves on one of the radio towers on the football field, call in a Code yellow, and start firing as the kids came out.
This is flawed, however because Cops roll up in squad cars and wait at the ends of each football field as soon as the call is made. Eitherway, our school needs a better lockdown and code yellow procedure.
