I saw something on the news about a kid who's started a petition to ban attack ads from TV. Makes sense. I'm just as sick as he is of seeing negative campaign ads all the time. Candidates and committees should worry about their own agendas before going after their opponents.

Elections would be so much more interesting if commercials listed everything good and bad about the candidates so people don't get mixed up between attack ads, counterattack ads, and ads counterattacking the counterattack ads.

MAKE IT STOP! Either show everything about yourselves, candidates, or don't advertise at all.

I'm IantheGecko, and I approve this message.

I couldn't agree more. To me, if you're telling me all the things your opponent is doing wrong, then you have no clue on how to make things any better.

Don't tell me what the incumbent is doing wrong. I pay attention to the news. I know. Telling me insults my intelligence.
Tell me what you're going to do and how you're going to be better than the incumbent or incumbent party.

Yeah, the problem with attack ads is it's SO EASY to take one little thing the other candidate said or did and make him or her look really bad. It's just too easy to make the other candidate look like an idiot without 'technically' breaking any rules or telling any lies. I wish I could hear more about what the candidate is doing.

...They're funny, though. I'm gonna miss that...

Personally, I too want to see attack ads be taken away. I'd rather hear about your plans and the future of this country rather than what so and so did back in the 70's.

Meh...there's too much attacking going on outside of the ads. It just seems that politics anymore is a big pissing contest, with idiot extremists on both sides trying to do nothing more than shout at the top of their lungs to get their opinions across and validated. I mean, they might as well just say what they're really thinking and feeling, which boils down to "Your opinion is wrong!" or "I'm better than you as a general human being!" and "My morals are better than yours, because I have all the answers to the universe!"

That's what it feels like anymore.

It feels like that because that's what politics is, anymore.
Watch C-Span sometime. Notice how most votes are pretty close to party lines. It's like you can almost hear the thought. "Well, I'm a republican and a democrat came up with that, so I have to vote against it." or "I agree completely with the republican's bill, but since he's a republican and I'm a democrat, I have to vote against it".
It's been that way for some time, but it seems like it's getting worse. That's why I'm not going to vote republican in the next election. It's also why I'm not going to vote democrat in the next election. I will, however, vote for a candidate that will put "politics" aside to do his/her freaking job.

I find it disgusting when the opposing candidate's personal life is brought into the campaign. Seriously, I don't care if Jim Bob cheated on his girlfriend with her entire sorority and his entire fraternity when he was in college. Can he get the job done in (place where his office would be)? If so, then I don't care. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like your average voter is smart enough to see through the attacks.

I generally vote republican, but back when I was living in Colorado, I got some attack junk mail from the republican candidate for something:
Image
I mean, if the worst thing you've got against a candidate is that picture of Howard Dean, then you're really scraping. I ended up voting democratic mostly based on how terrible the republican candidate was.

The worst thing is that millions are spent each year on attack ads that could be spent trying to fulfil their promises

I don't watch TV more then maybe an hour a week (at my Dad's, while we eat, and its usually a commercial-less movie). So I don't really see attack ads.

I do read plenty though. I would say that in general, partisanship turns me off from a person. All criticism isn't partisanship in my opinion though; rather just simplistic blanket statements are.

Honestly, in the end you get used to the noise, and look past it.

Occasionally, a man like Obama comes out, and actually respects and understands his oponents. Then you've got something truly special.

Yeah. As it is, it looks like 2008 is going to be a contest between Hillary and Mcain. Both of them are smart, competant, and principled, and it seems like a win win situation, though neither of them are as good as Obama in my opinion. Hillary lacks charisma and though I don't have context, has made some unmeasured statemnts. Mcain is more conservative then me in someways (being i'm a liberal), and is getting up there in years.

Attacks ads are stupid, but sometimes they are so funny. I just saw one that said, "If Jon Kyl is elected, woman could go to jail." That is the most desperate thing ever, considering it is obvious Jon Kyl will be senator.

He's got my vote. Women are treated waaaaay too gently (compared to men) by our current justice system.

Those ads are one on the small reasons I abandoned the TV for the Interwebs.
So I guess they should be taken off the air.

Heh, I can't even imagine how that would look.
Edit:
Okay, there was one ad in '04 that caught my attention on the net.
(Google "Bush anime Yakuza" for some results)
The video was either taken down or I'm just too stupid to find the actual link.
In a part of the Bush attack ad it showed this;
Image
A picture of Karry paired with some type of Nicholas Wolfwood/Yugi Mutou/Tetsuo Shima photoshop mutation(Probably created by your's truly) over some flashy japanese television showesqe background.
It went something like this: "John Kerry says he's 'Author of a strategy to win the war on terror?'...Against the Japanese yakuza."

It leaves me wondering, does The Bush administration watch Cartoon network on their free time?

Edit: Found it.
Oh how I love thee, Youtube.

I voted in the 2004 election, and there was an election for the senate. The two competing senators had engaged in a massive mudslinging campaign: almost every ad would simply attack the other senator. I got sick of it and when election time came, I believe I voted for some third party, knowing nothing of them, just to make the point that I don't want either of those men in office. (Naturally, one of them did win.)

Well, kef--I think that 2004 was just a very nasty election in general.

And someone actually voted YES to this poll? I'd like to hear their reasonings...

This mid-term election is shaping up to be just as nasty. There is a group on facebook called something like "Vote the Child Molesting Warmongers Out of Office!"..
Yeah, I know there are some on the right that are just as stupid.

Oh, for the days when only the intelligent were allowed to vote..

On the other hand, perhaps we should be glad we don't live in Soviet Russia.

In Soviet Russia, ads attack YOU!

I don't know, this election seems more honest. The overly broad voter outrage over Foley, isn't fair, but seems for the most part, to not really be of democrat creation; not really of media creation in some sense either, as granted Foley's got a lot of headlines, but the press has stuck to the facts.

You look back at 2004, and you've got effectual lies coming out Kerry and Bushes mouths every three seconds (check http://www.factcheck.org's archives for proof), and big simplistic and somewhat innacurate slogans conquering the air waves.

In 06, it seems as though that which is driving the election this way and that, is much more real and less embedded in "truthieness".

Illinoian, aren't we?

Well, so am I. ;)

Anyway, I don't know why I never posted in here, since I thought I did. SO, I'll go and say that I generally don't pay attention to attack ads. I just barely notice 'em.

And that was so funny Kef, that's my new signature!

Illinoian, aren't we?

Nope, i'm from Conneticut. And before you ask, i'm white, and I live in a town in which 12,000 on average is paid for per student per year in the high school I attend.

Around when podcasts first came out, I picked up Obama's, and by his 5th or 6th transmission he became my favorite politician.

I bought his book "Dreams of my father" while in a music summer camp in Arizona, and the girl behind the counter at the store said "I hope he runs for president". Another guy I met briefly either in Conn or New York said that "I know he's new, but he should run anyway".

I think he has a much better chance of winning the presidency then Hillary, as he carries no baggage, and has a lot more charisma then she does. The only thing one might be worried about, is he might not be slick enough to weave through a negative ad campain, as politics is not really his thing; this is both good and bad. He is also, not particularly robust in funds right now to my knowledge.

I thought the only way someone could know a Senator is if they lived in the same state. Guess I was wrong.

Tiny l'il self-toastpaint

I've thought about it and realize that some ads do get annoying at times. At least it'll be over (for now) in a few weeks.

Too bad I'll be old enough to vote in the 2008 election. Now I have to actually make decisions based on all this mudslinging! =\

Well, its probably true for most senators, that they aren't very well known outside their own states. However, Obama is a celebrity. Perhaps his name isn't as recognisable as lets say John Kerry's, Bill Frist's, or John Mcains, but his is one that should be recognised by those who read the papers daily (he recieved headlines with his convention speech, his fued with Mcain, and his trip to Africa).

You know, I think I've found something even dumber than attack ads..
I call them the "Vote for my daddy!" ads. The basic ad is a kid playing or something and they say something like vote for my daddy". More often than not, you see these as mailers or billboards.
What's the point? Some 3 year-old kid tells me I should vote for someone. I guess I should listen to them.

this reminds me of 2004.
