Taol got up. "So you can tell when you'll need something? Hmm. I once knew someone like that." He headed back towards the village. "I'm going to see if I can find an unbroken mirror in this mess."

Blood and ale! Kain cursed. Taol missed nothing. Kain had revealed too much already. I'm getting sloppy, he thought to himself. The mage problem was grating on him, making him make clumsy mistakes.
I'll just have to be more careful from now on, he told himself.
Kain turned around. Where had that young thief got off to? No matter. Once Taol equipped himself with a mirror, they could find this mage Taol seemed to think they need.
I guess you have to fight fire with fire, Kain thought, but I wish we didn't have to keep involving magic. I guess I'll just have to get over my difficulties with magic. But once this threat is over, if I never see another mage again, it'll be too soon. There's got to be some country somewhere without magic. But for now, I'll have to put up with it.

Taol looked around the wreckage. Suddenly, he spotted a flash of light. He walked to the spot and kneeled down to examine it. He reached down and grabbed the object. He pulled up a glass plate shaped like a teardrop. On it was an engraving of a candle. Taol put it in his pack and continued to look for a mirror.

Kain remembered something Taol had said.
I once knew someone like that
Kain had, too. His father had been a thief like he was now, but had cautioned Kain not to follow the same path.
"I pray you have not been given the same gift as I, my son," his father had told him long, long ago. "It seems like a blessing, but it is a curse. I am unable not to take something I will need later, even if it does not belong to me. Because of this I have become a thief. Never think the occupation of thief is something to be desired, son. Whatever you do, do not follow in my footsteps."
Kain had tried to obey--he had joined the army and fought for his country in the Mage Wars. But as a soldier, especially in as horrific a war as that, he had often been in danger of his life, and soon he discovered he had inherited the same gift. He had begun to steal to get the things he needed--and because of that he was thrown out of the army and had learned to live in the woods."
Too late to go back now, though. It's interesting to wonder what might have been, though, if only I had been born a normal man...

Taol kept looking at the ground for a mirror. Instead, he saw a perfectly round rock. He picked it up and put it in his pocket. I wonder how it got like that? he thought. He then saw a dull, ordinary mirror lying on the ground. He put in his pack and started to head back to Kain.

Kain saw Taol coming towards him.
"Ready to find that mage? Where were you planning to find him, anyway, and to what end?"

"I have no particular mage in mind," said Taol. "I just think we ought to have a mage with us."

"Good point. Perhaps we should check out Magimus City in the north. It's a gathering-spot for mages, to trade information and study new spells. If we can find any willing mage-for-hire, we'll find him there."

"Well, let's go." He started walking North. As he walked, he pulled out the candle engraving and began to examine it.

"We should stick to the river as much as we can. I'd prefer we stayed more in the forest, for cover. Besides, I can defend myself better in the forest. It may be a good idea to steer clear of those ruins..."

Kain looked closer at the map. He remembered everything he knew about Magmius.
Seated under a huge volcano, and surrounded by a river of molten lava, no one could enter the city casually. A treacherous path across lava rock was the only way in. Non-mages occasionally went there, but only to recruit mages-for-hire. The city had a strict code of laws, and any to break them would be punished severely. This code included not threatening or extorting mages when hiring them, and often non-mages had to settle for extravagent prices to avoid breaking these rules. Mages were expensive--especially at Magmius. But it was the only reliable place to find them.Kain just wanted to get in and out of that city of snakes as fast as possible.

Taol entered the bookshop. He walked to the shelves and picked out two—Artifacts and Their Powers and An Adventurer's Guide to Ancient Ruins, Temples, and Dungeons. He paid the old man behind the counter, who did not seem to find it at all unusual for someone to be buying books after the catastophe. Taol left and headed back to Kain.

When Taol returned, the two began walking along the river. Kain kept completely alert, as always when traveling. However, they would not travel entirely unseen, and it would be better to seem casual by making small talk. Then, anyone they encountered would not suspect the gravity of their mission.
"So, what's your history? How does a half-elf end up in this small town, buying a cursed sword? If you don't want to say, you needn't, but I would appreciate knowing a little more about you."

"Well, to tell you the truth, I started travelling for treasure. I found some. There's my sword, of course, and a couple other things. That village was old. I figured there had to be something. I was right."

"You know, I fought elves in the Mage Wars. Hareth fought the nation of elves on its western front. I fought other humans too, and dwarves. Seems if there was any type of race, I killed it. Even races where the women fought. There's a reason they call them the Mage Wars, you know. Mages weren't just the main fighters--every commander was a mage. The entire war worked under the machinations of mages. If they told us to fight, we fought. If they told us to die, we died. If they told us to kill, we killed. Men, elves, women, children. Anyone who disobeyed had their insides flayed by magic. The mages didn't care who was killed or scarred by killing someone else--they had their ends, and we were means to those ends. So you can see why I dislike magic.
"But enough about me. You were saying?"

I could hate the mage for that... thought Taol. "Well," he said aloud, "like I said, I wanted treasure. Still do. Some of my favorites are the sword, some gemstones, and a magic box." Taol fell silent; he took out the book on ruins and read as he walked.

Taol flipped to the chapter entitled The Ruins of the Southern Continent. He looked up the ruins he saw on the map.

The two companions traveled for several days through the woods. Not surprisingly, they met no one on the path. Since the Mage Wars, most mages kept separate from humans, except the lesser-powered mages who worked as healers, court entertainers, or bounty hunters. The more powerful mages who had once served as advisors to royalty, then seized power during the Wars, now had given up ruling the nations of non-mages. Now they had their own nation in Magmius, where who knows what went on as they schemed together. Kain knew the outcome would not be good.
The evil mage himself may be in Magmius, Kain thought. He could be anywhere, but most certainly in Magmius. I only hope he's working alone though, and not at the sanction of the other mages. It seems like if the entire council of mages was after us, we would have been caught by now. But whoever this mage is, he's very powerful. I am loathe to bring this to the attention of the mage council, lest they see it as a way to gain power. We only need one mage right now--and hopefully we can keep contact to a minimum with the others.

According to the book, the nearby ruins contained a legendary artifact—the seal-box. Taol took out his book on artifacts and looked up the seal-box. According to legend, read the book, the seal-box could contain any power or force indefinetely until the box is opened from the outside. Taol turned to Kain to ask if they could go.

Kain listened to Taol's proposal.
"Sounds useful. And if you say it's not cursed, I believe you. But ruins with magic treasures often are either guarded by some mage or monster, or require some test to get inside. Think we can handle it?"

"Of course!" said Taol. He was looking forward to another treasure, and this one seemed powerful. While he felt a little guilty for sidetracking them from their quest, he reasoned that the box may come in handy. "We can go together or I can go alone; which do you prefer?"

"I think it would be best if we stuck together. You can focus on the treasure that way, while I keep on the lookout for golems or oter unwelcome visitors."

"Okay," said Taol. A small bird landed on Taol's shoulder. He took some sunflower seeds out of his pack and gave them to it.

Kain eyed the bird hungrily, but didn't say anything. This would certainly be easier than laying a snare for conies tonight--but he thought better of suggesting it to Taol.
"So, which way to the ruins?"

Taol saw the hunger in Kain's eyes, and did not approve. "Northeast," he said tersely, "about 2 day walk."

Kain sensed Taol's disapproval.
An ascetic, Kain thought to himself. I guess it takes all kinds. I'd like to see how far that holds up in war, though. But though Kain would not admit it, even to himself, he admired that this elf was still able to appreciate simpler things, with the world how it was. Kain himself was so jaded, it had been many years since he had been able to do so.
"Well, let's get started than," Kain said, trying to distract his mind from this line of thought.
The two traveled on Taol's bearing, until the ruins came in sight. They appeared to be a large ziggaraut, a remnant from the old days of fanatical priest-mages in Hareth.
"You can take it from here," said Kain, already feeling uncomfortable. The barbaric priests of these shrines had sacrificed humans, thinking it would give them more power. In his mind, the mages leading the Mage Wars had been no different. "I'll keep watch from out here."

Taol did ot think of birds and other parts of the natural world as simple. In fact, he thought them extremely complexx. But he did not expect Kain to understand this.
"If a golem comes, don't kill it—use a regular weapon. I think it'll make a good test." Taol, the bird still riding on his shoulder, set off towards the ruin.
