Kain shrugged. "Sure." He turned his back to the ruins, watching the forest as Taol entered the clearing. <ooc> did Taol just read Kain's mind???</ooc> |

<ooc>No. But he is very good at reading expressions.</ooc> The ruin loomed up ahead of Taol. HE got out his sword, even though the ruin was supposed to be long abandoned. He steeled himself and entered the ruin. |

Kain shifted uneasily on the balls of his feet. Something wasn't right. "I got it," Taol said behind him. Kain whirled around. "That was fast." Why was Kain so uneasy? Taol seemed to be fine. Kain saw Taol's bird flying towards them. But this time, it did not land on Taol's shoulder. It shrieked angrily at Kain. Of course! Kain whipped out his mirror, and sure enough, the grotesque form of a mud golem stared back at him. Kain brought out his knife and steeled himself. This would not be an easy fight. |

[s]"Wait..." said Taol. "I wonder..." Taol took out his own mirror, and positioned it to catch the reflection of Kain's mirror. A mud golem appeared in Taol's mirror as well. "That bird is real. It's your mirror that's fake!" The bird hid in an open pocket in Taol's backpack.[/s] <ooc>I misunderstood your post.</ooc> With the bird on his shoulder, Taol spotted a huge door leading to the inner area of the temple. Entering, he saw a large pedestal with a box on it. |

The mud golem charged Kain, hardening its fist and swinging at Kain's stomach. Kain tried to dodge, but the creature moved swiftly and fluidly, and Kain was knocked to the ground. Kain threw his knife with perfect aim, but the golem flowed to the side, uninjured. Kain reached desperately for his rucksack. There had to be something he could use. His fingers closed on a small vial just as the golem came at him again. Hoping it contained some powerful liquid, he broke the vial over the golem. Kain was shocked to find the vial full of only water. How could this help him? Suddenly he realized. The golem was more water than dirt now, and was flowing uncontrollably. It melted to the ground in a puddle that vaguely resembled its true form. Kain retrieved his knife and plunged it into the golem's heart-analogue. Once again, his ability had saved him. But, he remembered, the bird saved me as well. |

Taol looked at the pedestal, looking for traps. He noticed that removing the box would release a button, probably activating booby traps. He looked at the bird on his shoulder. Then he picked up a nearby stone. He switched the box and the stone, but wasn't quick enough. A huge nearby door began to open. |

I don't want to get involved in some magical traps. Reason tells me to stay here... Kain groaned and rolled his eyes as he ran towards the temple to help Taol. Why must I always do stupid things? |

Before Taol's eyes appeared a monstrous wood-golem. Taol quickly hatched a plan. He ran over to it and slashed it. The golem was reduced to sawdust. Taol knew it would be back, unless he did something. He scooped the sawdust into his new box. |

Before Taol's eyes appeared a monstrous wood-golem. Taol quickly hatched a plan. He ran over to it and slashed it. The golem was reduced to sawdust. Taol knew it would be back, unless he did something. He scooped the sawdust into his new box. Kain slid across the stone floor of the temple until he reached the inner sanctum, just in time to see Taol thwart the golem. Guess he doesn't need my help. I guess I can help him contain the dust, though. Wordlessly Kain knelt to help Taol clean up the dangerous mess. |

Kain nodded. Taol had been acting strange recently, but then again, so had Kain. He wished life could go back to before this golem mess started--or before he ever even discovered his ability. But that time was past. Better to focus on the present. He reached into his sack and brought out a small metal puzzle to tinker with until Taol returned. |

Kain fiddled with his puzzle awhile, but couldn't seem to concentrate. He wasn't comfortable inside this temple. It reminded him too much of a time long ago--when his battalion had been summoned to the Mage Commander's palace to see how dissadents were punished... He shook his head. He did not want to think about that. The past was long gone--and the present had troubles of its own. He stood and went outside. |

Taol walked back to Kain. "Okay, let's move on." I should buy a shield when we get there... I have a feeling I'll need one.. Kain nodded. The two contiued to travel until they reached the gates of Magmius. The walls of the city ringed the volcano and the city itself was built up the slopes. A guard held watch atop the gates. "Who goes there? What token have you to allow entrance into Magmius? Kain reached into his rucksack and pulled out a small medallion with the sigil of Magmius. He had stolen this from a mage long ago during the Wars. He showed it to the guard. "Very well, you may pass." Taol and Kain entered the city, where Kain first noticed a large map engraved on a stone sign just inside the city. It was the first comprehensive map of the entire continent Kain had seen. Such were rare--and Kain did not need his ability to tell him this was important. <ooc> i've got the map made, but it only lines up right in a certain font- Lucidia Console (notepad font) Is there any way to keep this font in my post, or insert the text as an image? I don't have an image hosting site. </ooc> "I'll work on copying the map," Kain told Taol. "You can go buy that shield." |

<ooc> sorry it's been a while, but my computer will finally let me back on to this site. Anyone, feel free to join in to the story--here's a brief summary for anyone who doesn't feel like reading it over. Taol (LordQuackingstick), an elf-human hybrid with the ability to retain great amounts of knowledge, and Kain (me), a human rouge with the ability to sense when he will need any object in the future, are being attacked by golems (elemental constructs) controlled by a sinister mage. One of his lackeys seems to be an old friend of Taol's named Sriz, though this may be a shapeshifting mud golem, or she may be under coercion. Jeor, a human swordsman, disappeared and is nowhere to be found. Taol and Sriz have traveled to the mage city of Magmius to enlist a mage to help them. If you want to join in, here are some characters to try-- The Dark Mage Sriz A mage in Magmius to work for us Any various character to join us in Magmius A new villian, or anti-hero. A golem who resisted the mage's control would shake things up... Anyway, back to the story. </ooc> Kain copied over the large map. Nero was running as fast as he could. The straw golem was fast, but Nero's light legs were much faster. Nero knew he would tire out eventually, and the golem seemed to have a lot of energy. Nero dodged a branch, then avoided a swipe from a golem. As he was running he noticed a bird soaring overhead. It looked familiar, but he couldn't quite tell where he'd seen it before. Then he remembered the man from the city. Towel...Tale...Taol? Yes, that was it, Taol...He always played that instrument and he always had a bird perched on his shoul- THE BIRD! He realized. "maybe the bird can lead me to them...if I can escape this stupid golem...." |

Kain wandered around the town until he a tavern caught his eye. It was one of the few taverns not marked with the symbol of Magmius--meaning it was not reserved for mages alone. This meant few mages would frequent it, not wanting to associate themselves with non-mages. A perfect place for Kain. It had been too long since he had had a good quaff of ale and a good night's sleep. The information that flowed as fast as beer in taverns could be useful as well. Kain had been keeping to the corners of taverns for the most part recently, not wanting to draw attention to himself. But no one knew who he was here, and Kain wanted information. He strode confidently to a center table and nodded to the barmaid. She brought over a flagon of ale and a bowl of thick stew. Kain's stomach grumbled. "Been traveling awhile, m'lord?" the large barmaid asked. "Well don't you worry, we've got plenty of rooms, and mages don't darken our door here. A sort of Safe Haven in Magmius, this is. So you just drink up, and get some rest." Kain nodded gratefully. He now realized how tired he was after running for so long. He doubted he had slept well more than twice since joining the army--and once he had been thrown out, there was no more sleep for him. The innkeeper saw him slumped over his food and came to his table. "Been a long journey, eh? I know what that's like." Kain looked up. This man seemed strangely familiar. "Kain?" the man asked, and suddenly Kain realized this was Len, one of the men in his squadron from the Mage Wars. "Len? Where have you been all this time?" "Well, as you know, after the Mage Wars, the mages settled in Magmius. I decided this place needed a mage-free area, as it were. So I set up shop here and filled the place with soldiers, so no mages would come here. By Magmius law I couldn't close my doors to mages, so I made sure they wouldn't want to come. How'd you get out of the War, though? I seem to remember you leaving afore it was through." Kain sat stiffly. This was a bad direction the conversation was going. "Wait a minute," Len said warily. "Kain...weren't you the one they--Yes, you deserted, after stealing from a commander! They hunted you for days. As I remember, you stole something from me as well..." "Len," Kain growled. "You really can't run forever, Kain. The mages will find you. They find everyone--and they're too proud to let someone get away. They have a vendetta--and they will not stop until they have you. It'll go much better for you if I turn you in now." Kain did not hesitate. He leapt up and tipped the table onto Len. The former soldier had gotten fat tending his pub and fell under the load, calling for guards. Kain ran from the tavern and into an alleyway. The Magmius Guard pursued him down the back alleys and over the rooftops of the town, but eventually Kain shook them off, finally resting in a tiny street near the edge of town. Suppose I'm not going to get my rest now he thought. He hoped he would be able to find Taol in the morning. But tonight he had to lie low. |

After the sun had fully set and risen again, Kain finally emerged from hiding, hoping the guards had lessened their search. Still, it didn't hurt to be sure... Standing on a crate and reaching up to grab the sill of a second-story window, he pulled himself into a small residence. Inside, he found that he had, as always, made a good choice of windows. This room had a small washbasin and a razor. Quickly he shaved his sideburns, reducing his thick beard to a short goatee, and cut his hair short. He changed into a tunic and breeches he found in the room, throwing his own clothes out the window into the sewage trench running down the side of the street. He shouldered his priceless rucksack and climbed out the window. His appearance was sufficiently changed--no one should recognize him. Maybe not even Taol, he thought with a grin. I could play a good trick on him..but I'd better not. It would be difficult to find Taol again inside the city, and Taol himself would know this. It would be best to wait outside, where Taol would likely come to find him. Who knows? Maybe I'll find something of use out there. Slipping quietly out the gates of the city, Kain began to wait in the nearby woods. Suddenly he heard a sound, like fast footsteps. Out of the forest a boy came running--who Kain recognized as the thief from the village--Nero, I believe? Kain grabbed the frantic boy by the shoulders and pulled him behind a tree. The city guards would find a fleeing thief suspicious--and suspicious guards was the last thing Kain needed. "Hold on now, boy. What are you running from?" |

"The W-Wo-Woman in...town..." Nero Panted. "She...found out somehow..." "She took me to this temple, I barely managed to escape and she sent a group of straw golems after me. Luckily I was faster, although...one got pretty close to catching me....He might be able to get here any second now by tracking my scent......Wait, where's the other guy? The man with the instrument, and the bird..." "Where'd the bird go, anyways?" Neo looked over Kain's shoulder. "Hey, is that a weapons shop?" I dropped my handclaw in the temple, I'm just gonna go check out what they have..." |

Kain looked behind him. Sure enough, there was a tiny shack in the woods displaying the guild sign of a weapons shop. Now why would the armsdealer set up shop way out here? It must have some goods of which the mages of Magmius would not approve. Non-mage travelers would be directed here to get weapons--including Taol. "I have a feeling we should stick together from now on. I think Taol might have gone to that shop too." The two walked into the discreet weapons shop togetherl |

Nero browsed the handclaw area. "Huh, there's not very much of a selection.." Most of the handclaws were too expensive for Nero. "Never buy handclaws from a city centered around mages..." He found a nice handclaw perched on a shelf. "Huh...looks very durable...Won't wear with magic... effect on golems...only 240 gold coins....." Nero suddenly remembered Kain mention something about a mirror. Maybe he should get one. He walked over where he saw a durable cheap mirror. 10 coins. He got out the 750 coins he got from the cloaked woman in town and put 500 back in the bag. Nero was about to purchase when he got a bad feeling about the handclaws. He had a feeling, as if there were some curse on it. It looked odd, too, a red and black iron spiked handclaw cast with an eerie glow. He figured it was an alright deal anyways and purchased them. He put them on and walked over to Kain. |

Kain looked around. "I'm not sure what happened to Taol," he told Nero. "We'll have to go on without him. I'm going to find a mercenary mage to help protect us from whoever is chasing us. Since you're in the evil mage's sights now too, it would probably be a good idea to stick together. I'm going back into Magmius to look for a mage-for-hire, if you want to come along." |

Nero followed Kain back out to Magmius. The handclaw felt odd on his skin,as if it were holding his hand tighter and tighter at every passing second. He looked at the handclaw and thought it looked different from when he first purchased it. Then he swore he saw the handclaw move. nero stood still, staring at the handclaw. "must've....just been my imagination..." Nero then looked up and ran up to Kain. "So, where do you expect to find a mercenary mage willing to come with us?" |

Nero clenched his teeth. "It just feels kinda tight, maybe I got one too small..." He tried to move it to comfort his hand but it wouldn't even budge. He tried to pull it off, but the handclaw now felt as if it were part of his skin. "Its-It's not coming off!" He yelled. It looked as if the handclaw had grown and it was wrapping around his arm. "I had a bed feeling, yet I ignored my instinct...great, what if we have to cut this friggin' thing off?" The glow on the handclaw seemed to become brighter and more vibrant, and he felt weaker. "Di-did you say a tavern? I wonder if there are any inns, because I really feel I need to re-...re...r....." Nero collapsed on the ground. |

Kain swore. "I can't keep taking care of all these people!" Regardless, he picked up Nero and took him into the city, looking for the nearest healer. At last he spotted the mortar, pestle, and potion bowl of a magic healer. He took the unconscious boy inside. "I need healing, fast!" he announced. "This boy got some kind of cursed weapons, and now I can't get them off!" "Slow down," the (NPC) healer woman said. She appeared from behind a beaded curtain, dressed in exotic clothing, styles from the south end of Aram. "Rushing will get us nowhere. You can pay?" Kain reached into his rucksack and found a colorful stone. "Here." He shoved it toward her. "How much is this worth?" The woman looked at him, amused. "You don't know what this is, do you? No matter. You would have no use for it. Yes, this will be sufficient payment." "So can you heal him?" Kain asked hurriedly. "Yes, but it will take me some time..." "I can wait," Kain declared, and sat down on a stool. |

The woman grabbed the stone and quickly passed it around Nero's body. Soon his breathing turned back to normal, and Kain remained standing in awe. The woman noted his surprise and said, "It's a good thing you don't know what this stone can do." and with that, left him to remain with Nero. Nero opened his eyes, and sat up, and said with a tired look on his face, "What's going on?" He looked around, and after realizing what was missing, he quickly stood up and nearly yelled, "Where's the claw?!" |
