"Calm down, Nero. I think the healer took it. Trust me, you don't want that thing back."

Suddenly Kain noticed something. Nero seemed to have a desperate, almost feral look on his face. What had the handclaw done to him? And why did so many unsuspicious-looking armories sell cursed weapons?

"Let's get out of here. Once we find that mage, we can leave this town forever. This place haunts me."

Nero and Kain walked out of the :ehsteve: shop and looked for the nearest tavern. "My arm still feels a bit funny..." Nero said. Nero disregarded it, as it were most likely the effects of the stone on his arm taking place. Kain pointed to where he said they should go, and they walked inside.

"So you're finally here..." said A man in the corner. "Yes. I brought the man you told me to. I'd like my pay now." Nero replied as he winked at Kain without the man noticing. The man in the corner stood up and gave Nero a sack of gold coins. "What? But this isn't the amount we agreed on. This is only one tenth of the price!" Nero said. "Yes, well, we've decided we don't need your services anymore." The man said as he unsheathed his blade. He yelled as he swung furiously at Nero, while Nero dodged and jumped each attempted swipe. Nero jumped and kicked the man in the face, and quickly knocked the sword out of his hand and caught it in mid-air. Nero pointed the blade at the man's neck. Nero then stared at Kain as if he didn't even know what happened. Nero dropped the blade in front of the cowering man and ran out of the tavern as fast as he could.

Kain looked at Nero askance. Something was not right. The handclaw had done something to Nero...but Kain was not sure if Nero could be trusted even without the curse.

[s]Had he been trying to deliver Kain to that stranger? Sriz had turned on Nero when he had not delivered Kain and Taol, so why would Nero still think one of the mage's minions could be trusted? [/s]

Kain [s]was not surprised [/s] did not eliminate the possibility that Nero would betray him--he was a thief, after all, and a young one at that, meaning Nero did not follow the ancient code of thieves which older rouges like Kain followed.

[s]But why would Nero still trust the dark mage after it sent golems after him? Or had that all been a ploy?[/s] This would be a strange alliance indeed--two thieves, neither of whom trusted the other, or deserved trust.

"All right, Nero. This dark mage is against both of us. Me, because he wants me working for him, and you, because you were unable to deliver Taol and me to him. He will not stop chasing either of us until we take the fight to him. So we need to work together. But if we're going to work together, we need to lay a few ground rules.
"First of all, no communication with the dark mages or any of his minions. We can assume that anyone chasing us has some connection with him.
"Second, you don't have to tell me about our past, but I need to know what's going on now. No secrets. I know it must be hard to obey rules, being a thief, but there was a time when thieves had an unspoken code--never to betray another thief. This is getting harder as the lines between good and evil fade in the world, but I need to be able to trust you, and you me.
"Do not think you can hide something from me. I am not naive. If you betray me first, I will have no problem whatsoever betraying you. It will be better for both of us if we work together.
"All right. If you can agree to those, we can be on our way."

Kain looked up. The house in front of them bore a picture of a sack of coins between two hands--the hands radiating magical energy. This was the guild sign of mercenary mages. Once again, Kain's luck had led him in the right direction.

"Here. We'll ask this guy. Hopefully he comes cheap."

Kain strode confidently into the small house. Finally they could hire their mage and get out of this city.

<ooc> sorry, I didn't really describe it well....Nero had a plan, but it didn't quite work out. He wasn't betraying Kain, he was just trying to learn more about the mages from a spy for them, but it didn't work. </ooc>

<ooc> okay, I get it now. I cleared things up a little in my previous post. On with the story! </ooc>

Inside the house a tall, lanky young man sat with his feet propped up on a desk. A crystal ball lay on the desk, though it appeared to be only for show. Whoever this mage was, he did not appear to be very successful. His house was run-down, and his clothes were old.

This seemed like the perfect mage for Kain and Nero. Kain did not doubt that the mage had sufficient ability; he was just younger and still getting started in his mercenary career. Thus he would be unconnected with most of the higher-up mages, and more easily trusted. To the degree which one could trust any mage, that is.

"I suppose you need a mage-for-hire?" the mage said with a false display of confidence. "I don't come cheap, you know."

Kain threw a bag of coins on the table. It was half the price of hiring a more well-known mage, but it was more gold than this boy had ever seen in his life.

"You've got yourself a new mage," the boy said eagerly.

<ooc> I'd rather this mage not be an NPC--anyone can feel free to take this character!</ooc>

Nero walked out of the tavern and leaned against the wall. He then sighed and walked back to Kain and the Mage. "So, now where do we go? Wait, whatever happened to the other guy? I'm starting to get worried, what if the other mages got him? How are we going to find him?"

Nero walked back outside.

"Got yourself a little trouble, eh?" Someone said to him. Nero looked behind him, as thats where the voice sounded like it came from. Nobody was there. Almost nobody was on the street, and Nero was utterly confused.

"Down Here!" The voice said. Nero looked down, but saw nothing but the cobblestone street. "Your arm, kid!" Nero looked at his arm.

"...Okay....looking at my arm....is this some sort of trick? Okay...you got me, now show yourself."

"No, this isn't a trick! Okay, you want me to show myself? Fine." Nero still stared at his arm. It started bulging, as if something were under the skin. He didn't feel anything, but he still yelled.

"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" Nero yelled. A diamond sat on top of his arm. It appeared stuck, as if it were part of his skin. "What? You're the diamond? A talking diamond? Oh boy, I must be hallucinating, I need some rest.

"Darn it, kid, you're not hallucinating! I AM the diamond."

"Great, I'm going crazy." Nero said.

"Remember the handclaw?"

"The evil one? Yeah, the lady took it off using that stone."

"She didn't take it off, Nero."

"What?!"

"That handclaw you got was cursed. My spirit was trapped inside the diamond on the handclaw. The stone only removed the curse, and the handclaw was lost, but the diamond wasn't. So now, we're kinda sharing bodies."

"What?! Who are or were you? Who trapped you in that diamond?"

"My name is not important."

"Why were you in the claw?"

"That weapon used to be mine. I was an assassin, and my story is a long one. I will tell you later."

The mage was standing behind Nero. "Uhhh...so.....who were you talking to?" The mage asked.

"Just talking to myself..."Nero lied. Nero held his right arm behind his back."

"What are you hiding?" The mage asked. He grabbed Nero's right arm and looked at it. The diamond was gone, luckily for Nero.

Nero knew the mage wouldn't believe him. As for Kain, he might, but Nero didn't know how to tell him. Nero walked back to Kain as the mage followed. "So, are you ready?"

<ooc> info- in case you are confused

When Nero Passed out on Page 7, it was because the diamond was feeding on Nero's energy to restore the spirit's strength. The stone that Kain gave the woman was a rare spirit stone, which helped the spirit in the diamond regain his strength and fight off the curse in the handclaw, which destroyed it. When Nero regained consciousness, The handclaw appeared to be gone while the diamond was still inside. When nero fought the cloaked man, the assassin temporarily took over and thats why Nero had no idea what happened. </ooc>

<ooc> sorry I haven't been on for a while--I haven't been able to get on hsr much and won't in the future. so...<ooc>

Kain knew something was wrong with Nero, but he also knew he had to find Taol. He was uncomfortable with the band scattered about, and was eager to be on his way.
Kain turned to the mage. "Is there any way you can find someone for us in this city?"

"I'm afraid you've already been found."

Kain, Nero, and the mage whirled around to see the cloaked she-mage, Sriz, standing in the doorway.

"Quick!" Kain instructed the mage. Is this a shape-shifter or coerced human?"

"It's not a shapeshifter," the young mage said, strain showing on his face. "But to know whether she is being controlled, I'd have to probe her mind..."

Suddenly the young mage flew backward into the wall. His eyes were wide open, but his face blank.

"Foolish boy," Sriz chided. "He thought he could probe a mind as great as mine? I did not even have to expend any energy--he injured himself trying to examine me. It seems I have caught you at a weak point. Your swordsman was easy enough to catch--we are still trying to discover his power. You see, every few generations, certain abilities unexplainable even by magic manifest themselves. Yet almost never do more than one of these abilities show up at once. To appear in the four of you...the swordsman, whom we only know has a power, yet not what it is; the half-elf, with his amazing memory enabling him to possess great knowledge; the rouge, with his ability to sense objects useful later on; and of course, the young thief, whose power is only just now showing itself. You will be very useful to my master."

"We won't be puppets like you," Kain protested.

"You won't have much choice." For a moment a look of sadness flashed over Sriz's face. "My master has many ways of convincing one to follow his will...But never mind about that. I only need to apprehend you. You will be given the choice to follow him willingly."

"You know we have great powers," Kain stated. "What makes you think it will be so easy to capture us? We do outnumber you." Kain pulled his knife from its sheath.

Nero looked down at his arm, while walking slowly backwards against the wall. "Let me fight!" the boy shouted. "I have to help him!" A pause. "I don't care if I get injured, even if it does hurt you as well! I have to fight!"

Kain did not try to figure out Nero's strange actions. The boy was pinned against the wall by his arm, probably the actions of the she-mage. Kain was on his own.

My thievery skills won't help me here, he thought to himself. I've got to use what I have... Kain opened his haversack and was horrified to see only one item inside. How could he only have this one object left? He picked up the small crystal, knowing it would save his life but hoping it would save the young mage and Nero as well.

"I'll try not to hurt you," said Sriz, "for both our sakes. It will go better if you do not resist."

Kain did not wait as Sriz summoned an orb of energy to throw at him. He leapt forward and drove the sharpest end of the crsytal into Sriz's heart. He leapt back.

"You think a single puncture can kill me?" Sriz said with a grin, though she seemed to be weakened by the crystal in her heart. "My master has given me great powers."

Suddenly Kain realized what had happened. The crystal had saved his life, for Sriz was weakened enough for him to escape. But the crystal could not save Nero and the mage, unless...Somehow Kain knew it needed some kind of energy to work. He made his decision quickly.

Kain leapt forward again and placed both hands on te crystal. The life force from his body flowed into the crystal, burning through the dark mage. Sriz screamed as energy coursed through her, rattling her bones. At last she and Kain fell to the floor together.

Nero and the mage looked on in shock. Sriz was dead, but by Kain's own choice the crystal had not saved his life. For once, an object Kain had found saved the lives of others, because he was willing to forfiet his own life.

"This isn't over," said the mage. "Her master is still out there. But I suppose Kain will always be remembered in our band."

"Our band?" said Nero.

"Yes. I will join you--and you needn't pay me. This journey means more than saving the lives of a few people. The very world is at stake. One man has already died--let us make sure no more fall."

<ooc> yes, Kain just died. now you can continue the story without waiting for me to post. goodbye, homestarwiki forum, it's been nice knowing you. <ooc>

[ooc] Hey, why not? 'Choo got against necromancy?[/ooc]

Taol wandered around looking for somewhere to find a shield, but there seemed to be a paucity of good armories. Most likely this was because he was in mage country. They didn't need shields.

He kept getting strange looks, and eventually people started pointing and whispering. He figured it was because he wasn't a mage, but it still unsettled him.

[ooc]This is my characters intro thing. My character likes swordplay, but he steals from people and places a lot[/ooc]

Ithrid ran out of a store holding a bag of stolen goods.
"Get back here!" Said a guard.
Ithrid pulled out his sword and got ready to fight the guard. He swung his sword and it came out wet, and blood red. He wiped off the blood, and kept going with his life.

"Thats Him!" said a guard. He had a whole troop of about 10 guards.
He slashed at them with fury, he killed about 1 until he got punched in the face and was knocked out.

Taol saw the whole spectacle unfold. Some lizard ran out of a store carrying stolen things. But the store guards ganged up on him, and knocked him out. One guard was being treated for wounds.

A crowd had formed around the unconcious reptilian thief. Taol elbowed his way to the lizard. He figured the lizard was an amateur; no good burglar would steal during the daytime, not in Magmius.

Taol quickly grabbed the lizard away while the guards weren't looking. He was afraid that the bystanders would alert the guards, and he would be arrested.

They didn't. Taol dragged the lizard into an alley. Normally he wouldn't help a criminal, but he figured he could be an ally. He sat down on a crate and waited for the lizard to regain conciousness.

As Ithrid awoke there was an elf with him. This startled Ithrid he jumped back and pulled out his sword.
"Speak, Elf or this will be your last breath!" Said Ithrid
The elf did nothing.
"Well then! Ready for a battle that you shan't soon forget! But if you wish not to fight speak up!"

[ooc]Don't worry I just did that because I knew I couldn't speak for your character. Besides Ithrid couldn't kill Taol even if he tried[/ooc]
