<several days pass, now Kain's timetable lines up with Taol and Jeor> Kain watched from a hill above the small town at the action below. He had traveled for days across the countryside, determined to retrieve the sword. He had been doggedly pursued by golems, but had managed to avoid them thus far. He had hoped it would not be too difficult to find the sword again--and it was not. However, he was unsure how he would get it now. He had to destroy the sword completely to rid himself of the mark--he did not trust the priests. They would only use more magic to try and remove the mark and uncurse the sword--and no magic could be trusted. It was now only a question of how he would get at the sword, with the warrior, priest, and half-elf watching... <ooc> so, the golem sword is now stuck in the ground. are we done with Taol's sword, the one he thought was from a legend? if not, we should probably start naming our weapons, i'm getting confused...<ooc> |

Jeor, displaying a bit of frustration, turned around. "I'll go get it," he mumbled. Jeor made his way to the place where the sword had become stuck in the earth. He once again attempted to pull the sword out; once again, it was to no avail. Jeor went back to the temple, where Juyl was waiting for him. "It's no use," said Jeor. "The sword won't come out. Do you know anything about swords that do that sort of thing?" Jeor remembered a man he saw, searching the forest for something or other. He saved the information for later. |

<Nah, it's not over. We'll get to it once the golem-killing sword is uncursed, one way or another.<ooc> |

Kain seized his opportunity. He ran to the warrior and seized him around the neck, placing his dagger under the swordsman's chin. "You put the sword in there. Get it out and bring it to me now." |

Jeor, despite his usual warrior-like stoicness, was utterly terrified. "What... wha... I didn't... I dropped it." Now Jeor recalled that this was the man that he had seen in the forest. "No, I didn't drop it.. it jumped... It jumped out. I had no control over it. Then it just stayed there, like it was held by some magical force." |

Kain turned on the old man. "Whatever magic you did, remove it. I simply want to live my life, and I don't want to kill anyone. But that sword has to be destroyed." |

Taol watched the scene unfold from atop the hill. He was unsure whether or not to interfere. He picked up a rock and tossed it up and caught it again. He then threw the rock into a nearby pond and descended the hill, heading towards the fight. |

"I knew it was cursed," said Jeor, trembling. "Towel... Taol told me. What does Juyl have to do with this? What do you want from us? It can't be that dangerous.. can it?" |

"It's magic, what do you think? After prolonged use it turns the weilder into a mindless golem. If that's not dangerous enough, a single touch will brand you as a hunter of golems. Golems will know you bore the sword, and seek you kill you before you kill them. Satisfied?" |

"I didn't use it in a prolonged way, though. So I'm not a mindless golem. But I did touch the blade... to inspect it..." Jeor paused, petrified. He heard something in the distance. |

Kain was torn. He loathed magic, but it seemed it may be the only way out of this mess. Kain had rarely been truly afraid before, but when magic came into the equation... He turned again to the priest. "What do you know of this?" |

Juyl sighed; he had hoped to be forgotten by this madman. "I know that its cursed. And from what you've said, it's a sword specifically designed for killing wood-golems. But the magic on it has a side-effect. Rather crude magic, really. It'd be simple enough to take away the side-effect while leaving its golem-killing powers intact. But you don't want me to do that, do you, Mr. Anti-magic?" |

"Just reverse that side effect. Reverse the side effect, before this guy takes a knife to my throat," said Jeor. The sound grew louder. |

Kain took a deep breath. Magic could not be trusted--it was too volatile. But when magic was the problem, perhaps it was the only solution. He glanced towards the woods, where he heard a rustling. An experienced tracker, he knew exactly what it was. "Do what you have to. But nothing more. I don't want any magic left over in me." |

Juyl sighed. "It's not that easy. I have to be able to see the whole sword. And I can't, because it's stuck in the ground. You'll have to figure out how to get it out. If I were you, I'd find Taol. He knows about swords." |

Jeor saw Taol descending the hill. "He's coming right now. Not to mention, so is that golem." |

"How did I get myself into this?" Kain muttered. "Dealing with a priest!" He dropped his knife arm, but kept his hand clenched tight. "Alright, warrior, you've seen this half-elf. Help me find him. I'm not going to harm you. If we work together, maybe we can solve this problem and go our separate ways." Somehow, Kain knew their destinies were more intertwined than that. Once again, he knew something he should not have. <edit--switch this post with the above one> |

Taol was already right behind Kain. "Looking for me?" |

Kain groaned. "I'll take care of this." He grabbed his knife and threw it expertly at the golem's forehead. The golem shrieked and turned to a pile of sawdust. "He'll be back. It only takes a few hours for a wood golem to reassemble himself." |

"Taol. That sword you suggested that I have is cursed. It has to do with golems... well, you would know more than me about this, wouldn't you. The sword went right out of my hand, stuck itself into the ground, and I can't get it out." Jeor looked at Taol. "Would you know how to get it out?" |

"Mmm. Well, I'd say this is as good a test as any," said Taol cryptically. He took out the sword of legends. "All right. This sword {not the one in the ground} might be the Trisword, of legends." He swung the sword at the ground. After a blinding flash of light, the cursed sword was out of the ground. |

"Fine. Good job." Kain looked at his hand. The mark was still there. "But i'm still marked, and the golems are still coming. Got any more fancy swords?" |

Taol swung the sword again, shattering the cursed sword into tiny shards. "I could've fixed it," said Juyl. "No," said Taol, "this sword is too dangerous." |

"Thank you! Finally someone agrees with me. I'm not crazy, you know. If you experienced what I've experienced, you'd distrust magic too. But now that the sword's gone, I suppose I can be on my way." |

"The golems are still coming, though. They've spotted us, and now we don't have quite as many swords to kill them with." |

"Golems don't kill indiscriminantly. Either they think you are a threat, or they want something from you. Or...well, we don't really want to think about the third option." Kain shuddered. There had not been a mage capable of controlling golems for years. If another had been born.... |

"So says your experience," said Jeor. "The golems have always had some strange attraction to me. That's why so many of my swords are worn out." Jeor was actually referring to a skewed version of his own experience. Only once had a golem attempted to kill him. |

Kain shook his head. That was not an option. He took a small coin from his pocket. He had seen it at a shop weeks ago. Though it appeared to be a worthless trinket, he had known he would need it. Now it seemed he could use it. "Golems like shiny things. We'll offer them this." |

While the golems were distracted by the coin, Taol swung his sword. It appeared to multiply, and each copy flew into the heart of a Golem before dissappearing, leaving only the one in Taol's hand. "By the way, I intend to pay you for the sword, seeing as I destroyed it," he said to Jeor. He turned to Kain. "I think I have something for you." He opened his pack, and pulled out a small dagger. "This kills wood-golems dead. No magic involved," he said in response to Kain's worried face, "it just takes advantage of the fact that wood-goblins, being made of wood, don't like beavers. That dagger's made of beaver tooth." |

Kain nodded. Here was a man of sense. Well, maybe not completely a man. He had no particular dislike of elves, and many seemed more sensable than humans. Perhaps this man could be an ally, despite his use of magic. |
