"Augh, it'll have to do. Follow me. Oh, and take off that cloak and tie it into a bag. Empty out your backpack, too." Taol made his way back to the inn.

Kain discreetly pulled a small bag from his rucksack, and poured the sack's content into the smaller bag. He handed the rucksack to Taol.

Taol took the rucksack and headed into the inn, going to his room. When he got there, he took his sword and smashed a hole in the wall, revealing a large colony of termites. "I know it seems stupid, but get as many of them as possible!" shouted Taol. He began to put termites into the breadbox and rucksack.

"It's an emergency," Kain said, while stuffing the insects into the bag, "so I'll blindly follow you for now. But I'd like to know what's going on. What was the bell supposed to do? And what are we doing now?"

"Well," said Taol, "if the bell had actually rung, I hoped it would have reverberated the cursed sword's magic and killed the golems. So, having failed that, we're going to sic these termites on these wood-golems—emphasis on wood. Desparate times call for desparate measures. Look at the bright side. No magic involved this way."

"Good thinking," Kain conceded. "Here. I think we got all of them." He handed his bag to Taol. "You can take care of that. I'll hold the golems off while you spread the termites."
Kain clenched his golem knife. "I've been chased by these things for too long. I've got a score to settle. You may be an expert on nonconventional fighting, but there's no creature alive who can best me in a knife fight."
Hefting his knife, he ran for the golems coming through the door.

Taol headed to the town trebuchet. No creature alive...? We'll see when you try to fight me... Well, for now we have to be allies, thought Taol, as he loaded the insects into the trebuchet. He then pulled the lever, spreading termites all over the town.

<ooc> what's this small town doing with a trebuchet, i wonder? <ooc>
Kain drove his knife into his twelfth golem, making sure to hesitate so the golem could see the knife first. He looked over at Taol under the trebuchet. Something about the half-elf's face was not right.
I wonder how long I can trust him? he wondered. Kain bore no particular dislike of elves, any more than any other race. But he disliked being forced to have allies--especially one this clever.
But you can't cheat fate, he thought, and that at least, i have on my side.

Every time a termite ecountered a golem, it quickly began to snack on the monster. Soon, there were noticably fewer golems.

"Are the townsfolk all right?"
Kain surprised himself. Since when had he been concerned with the welfare of others? All this heroics was having an effect, it seemed. He shrugged this idea off and kept fighting.
Taol's termites were doing there work, but Kain still had to fight hard to fend the last golems off. At last, the creatures were all dead, or twitching helplessly under thousands of termites.

Taol walked up to Kain. "Well, it worked. Good job." His lone pointy ear quivvered. "Where's Jeor?"

"Mage's fire! I had forgotten! Last night, just before the golems came, Jeor vanished into thin air! I was going to look for him, but the golems kept us preoccupied. All that was left when he vanished was a puff of dust."

"What did you do with the dust? Did you take it?"

Author:  Revenge of the Burninated [ Sat Mar 31, 2007 9:04 pm ]
Post subject:

"Now why didn't I think of that?" Kain said sarcastically. "Maybe because the road itself is dusty, and even if the dust had any significance, it's mingled with the road itself now."

Post subject:

"No, the dust doesn't have any significance. I was messing with you." Taol didn't laugh, but his quivvering ear showed that he wanted to.

<ooc> Methinks Jeor's disappearance was something of a plot device, because he had to leave...Maybe if we integrate him into the plot he will return. <ooc>

"Why did all those golems attack in the first place? Even with you being marked, there shouldn't have been that many."

<ooc>Methinks so. When The Snork is on again we'll do that.</ooc>

"I have a feeling there's more to this than we know. You seem to have a lot of knowledge, and you said you have some type of ability of memory. I've--I've got some unique traits, and I think Jeor was more than a simple swordsman. Something brought us together, and something sent those golems after us. If a mage wants to make use of us against our will,it can only end badly.
"I'm getting tired of being hunted. I know if there's a mage involved, he'll be dangerous, but he'll only get more dangerous over time. I say we start hunting him. Maybe not to fight him just yet, but we can at least try and spy on him to see what he's after.
"Who knows? There may be no mage at all. Let's just see what happens. I have an idea. We can bait some golems to us in a place where we have the advantage. When they reach us, we can hide until they give up and go away. Then we just have to follow them to whoever's commanding them."

<ooc> anyone reading this who hasn't joined--feel free to take part! We could always use another member of our merry band! Or even join as a villain, if you wish. You know you want to.Also--LordQuakingstick--might we each take another character, this time a villain, to advance the plot a little? it might work...<ooc>

"It might work... only it wouldn't be the golems who would have to get tired, it would have to be the mage." Taol pulled out his sword. "As much as I love nonconventional fighting and clever tactics, I love a good swordfight too. One or the other should be useful against this mage. You seem to be a good fighter too. Now, I'll be right back. I have to check up one someone." Sriz...

Kain swept the last of the termites out of his rucksack. He returned his possessions into the bag, keeping a careful inventory. The items seemed discordant and random, but he knew he would need each one in some way.
This being done, he sat down on a fallen stone from the bell tower to wait for Taol.

The residential area wasa a mess. The golems had effectively demolished the entire temple. I never should have let that sword in that forest... thought Taol.

Kain stood. He was getting restless staying in one place for so long. Where was Taol? The half-elf seemed to be some type of hero, concerned even for the people of this tiny, insignificant town. As for the swordsman, Kain did not know enough of Jeor to see his character--yet no doubt the warrior would have felt concern for the people as well. As for Kain--Kain just wanted to stay alive and maybe make a little profit. If staying alive meant stopping an evil threat and perhaps saving some lives, he was not opposed. Despite his appearance, he was not a blackguard. He had once borne a sword instead of a dagger--but that was another story altogether. His past was behind him.

He began to wander through the town, picking up various odds and ends that he knew he would need. The people of the town had to concern themselves with rebuilding; they would not miss these items. Most were worthless, or at least worth much more to Kain. If Kain knew he needed something, it was because that object would somehow save his life. The townspeople would surely not protest to that.

And after all, Kain was a thief.

Taol could find no trace of life in the temple. This could be good or bad, he thought, good if they got away, bad if they didn't. He looked over the damage in town. This is all my fault... he thought. He headed back to where Kain had been waiting. When he saw he had left, he sat down on a rock, pulled out a small wind instrument, and played while he waited for Kain.

Kain made his rounds of the town, trying to ignore the haunted looks of the populace. Somehow, he could not help feeling that he had brought this disaster on them.
He shook this thought from his head and returned to the center of town, where Taol was waiting.
"Ready to go?"

"I know the woods around here well. There's a place not far from here--an open clearing with a small cave impossible to see from outside. It has a back way out in case we are found, and we can see the clearing from inside. If you can figure out a way to announce our presence in the clearing, we can hide in the cave until the mage gives up looking, and follow his golems to him. Or to whoever is controlling them."
