Marcus was hurt from the shadow thing pouncing on him. He painfully picked himself up and starting hurling dirt in the vampire's general direction. "Take THAT, shadow boy!" |

Coren picked up some dirt and threw it, unfortunately it hit the back of Marcus's head. "Sorry!" he said as he picked up another wad of dirt, and threw it at the air. |

Without hearing the word "sorry", Marcus drew his sword and almost slashed off part of Coren's ear before stopping himself. "Close one!" Marcus inhaled. He made sure that his tail didn't hit the cat man either. Marcus then took a rock the side of his head and hurled it at the shadow guy. "Look out, Taryn!" |

Taryn ducked just in time, seeming to move fluidly out of the way of the rock. "Hold your fire," she called. "We're not even certain our target is still in this little clearing." { Good idea. o-o } |

None of the dirt-clumps found their mark, but a few of the earlier melee attacks had found their mark. Though the vampire wasn't really hurt by the attacks, his clothing now had a few holes in it. Whenever he moved into sunlight, little trails of white smoke and ash appeared. Knowing he couldn't protect his sunlight protection forever, the Vampire took the offensive. Dumping Auriel to the ground to free up both arms, the Vampire attacked Taryn, attempting to drain her life force. However, this turned out to be a fatal error, as it immediately made him visible. Taryn felt two hands grasp her shoulders... and knew it must be the Vampire. |

Taryn swore colorfully under her breath again, and probably also uttered some kind of lame one-liner involving playing with fire and thus getting burned. "Take Aurieul back to the others," she ordered, nodding toward the now-visible(?) female half-elf on the ground. "And then someone come back for me." Her tone was less authoritative and more resigned now. Unless she could, say, pin the vampire to the ground in open sunlight long enough for him to turn to ash, she would likely have to resort to a lot of fancy magic that she simply wasn't sure she could use anymore without severely draining her energy. Lacking the ability to sleep, she would have to be kept in some kind of dark, quiet cell for a few days to recharge. At any rate, she felt the hands on her shoulders and immediately set herself ablaze. Well, really, it was less "setting herself ablaze" and more "becoming a humanoid-shaped column of fire." (I'm assuming the vamp is behind her here...) She spun halfway around, ducked, and moved backward in one fluid motion, to try and free herself from the vampire's grip, in the process drawing one of her knives, more for show than for protection. "What are you trying to do?" she demanded. "You know what I am, and you know my kind provide no nourishment, in blood or life-force." { And really, they don't. o_o } |

Although the Vampire was now fully engulfed in flame, it did not hurt him... and he did not let go of Taryn. He said: "Oh, I know what you are, Specter, but It's not nourishment I seek. Your shroud of flame shall prove an excellent shield against the sunlight, and against your friends. For, at heart, you are a creature of evil, and all evil is mine to command. Your soul is mine! Yaaaaaaaaaaa!" Trayn felt agony in her mind, agony like she'd never felt before. The Vampire was ripping at her very being and trying to control her mind. She resisted with all her strength, but the Vampire's power was immense. She didn't know how long she could resist it's control. |

"I have no soul," Taryn spat through clenched teeth. Her humanoid shape then re-formed into a large arc, slipping out from beneath the vampire's hands and then reverting to humanoid shape again a few feet away. And then the flames were extinguished. Being fire of a magical nature, the flames on the Vampire's body also dissipated. Thinking quickly, she stepped into a patch of direct sunlight, just waiting for the vampire to follow her, at which point...well, she didn't have that part worked out yet, but it probably involved some creative tackling. |

His attempt to control Taryn having failed, and with his cloak of protection burned off, the Vampire was vulnerable, and he knew it. Deflecting blows from the combatants in the melee, he turned to Prosper and said: "This isn't over" before transforming into smoke and fleeing just as Captain Sealem and his group arrived to enter the fray. The Captain sighed and said: "It's getting away, and we can't stop it. Just like the other one. I doubt we've seen the last of them. Is everyone alright?" Meanwhile, Horin was working his healing magic on Tem. "Just lie still, flayer-man. I done mended ye ribs back together and your lungs should work again, but ye best take it easy and lie still for a while yet. That was an incredible blow to the chest you sustained... I'm surprised you're still in one piece. If he'd put little much again behind it, I'd wager the Vampire would have punched a hole straight through you." Maxwell, who was just finishing getting the chains and such off Eruantian, said: "Can't clerics turn undead, Horin?" Horin responded: "Aye, ye can indeed. The more we grow in our faith the more powerful undead we can turn. Alas, my faith isn't strong enough to turn Vampires yet, else I would have done so straight away. But I'll tell you, there are a few tricks In know we can use to fight them if they return. You've seen how they're vulnerable to sunlight. Vampires also have an aversion to Garlic. They can't stand to come near the stuff, or so I'm told. Sorry, it's my first Vampire. I really don't know what Garlic will do to them, but it's a safe bet they won't like it." Maxwell said: "Great. Where the heck are we gonna get Garlic from? We're in the middle of nowhere!" Horin relplied "Nay, laddie. We're in the middle of a land where things grow wild. Well, guess what grows wild and smells bad, eh? Garlic grows wild! Grows like a weed, it does. We just have to keep an eye out for it. Why, I bet there's some growing on those hills over there, or in the grasslands we're standing in. All we have to do is find some and harvest it, and wear the bulbs around our necks." Farnham said: "Um, as it happens, I have a small jar of powdered Garlic. Brought it along for cooking." Horing shook his head: "That's no good, it has to be cloves, and it's got to be fresh, not dried. Come on, help me look." |

Prosper had felt his spear connect and was about to plunge it in again when he heard the struggle behind him. He turned and saw the vampire, visible now, gripping Taryn, he ran for them, and just as he was raising his spear the undead hissed a threat and turned to smoke. Captain Sealem and his crew came then. Upon realizing that the vampire had escaped he asked how everyone was. "I'm fine," said the boy. The white aroura of armor the amulet provided was fading, soon to be nonexistant. And I still don't even know the full extent of what it does!, the young adventurer thought with amazement as he walked over to Auriel and pulled the bag off of her head. What did they wan't with them anyway? he thought. What do they wan't with me? The vampires parting hiss still rang in his ears. As he loosened the bonds he asked; "Auriel? Are you all right?" |

Taryn glared after the retreating vampire...and then immediately collapsed onto her knees. Her head still hurt, her shoulders hurt, and the energy expended for that brief display of pyrotechnics had to come from somewhere. "A cell. My cell. I need my cell. Where is my cell?" she mumbled frantically, digging into her pouch. Through the violent beatings of several fundamental laws of physics, the tall spectre shortly enough managed to climb all the way into the minuscule purse, reaching out to pull the flap closed behind her. Acedia, shortly after escaping from the confines of Eruantian's pocket, had taken off the nearly-spent rat medallion and had gone off after Sealem et al to go and see what they were after. She saw Taryn's bag lying inertly on the ground and picked it up, tapping on it a few times. "What?" came a slightly muffled, but familiar, voice from inside it. "Oh, good. I didn't know where you were," Acedia explained, having an idea of why her friend had crawled into this pouch. "I need to recharge. Would you mind terribly carrying me around until then?" "Not at all, Taryn." With that, Acedia slung the pouch over her right shoulder, the strap going across her chest and resting at her left hip. It seemed to hang a little more loosely on her than it did on Taryn, likely because Acedia had a considerably slighter build and a shorter torso. |

Eruantian, having just been rescued and untied, pulled the gag out of his mouth, stumbled to his feet and questioned "where am I" then fell flat on his face. "Agh" he groaned "I don't know what just happened, but that was not a pleasant way to travel. Oh, my head." |

Tem coughed up blood, but then got up. "Wow, that was worse than that ogre mage or whatever that hit me a few days ago." He rubbed his ribs. The healing magic tingled, and his head hurt like crazy. "Oh, geez, stupid vampires. I hear mirrors also help against vampires, and any form of sunlight, magical or otherwise works well, obviously." |

Horin put his arms out to steady Tem: "Hey, I said to lie still! Didn't anyone ever tell you to do what the doctor says? Well, you're my patient Tem, and I'm telling you to lie still. You've sustained a shock to the system, and I'm not sure if you're OK or not yet. So, I'm gonna give you something for your headache and I want you to just lie here untill it takes effect. It's a really good painkiller for headaches, but it'll also make you lightheaded and you'll feel a bit odd for a few minutes. The painkiller effects last much longer than the intoxicating side-effects do, otherwise I wouldn't use. Now, just lie still until while I prepare the medicine." Horin reached into the large pouch of herbal medicine he kept by his side and pulled out a number of items. "Lets see, three grains of Dreamweed seed, a stick of Caeien Root powder, a dash of salt, handfull of Perincin Grass, a Peppermint Leaf, Bernic Flower stems, and a bit dried of Poppyseed." He started grinding various herbal ingredients around in a mortar & pestle (one of these ) until it was ground into a rough powder, and then he dissolved the powder into a cup of water he poured from his canteen. Into the mixture, he put a drop of Rum from the jug in his wagon and he stirred it up into a liquid that had the consistency of milk (but it was semi-opaque, not milky.) "If I had a fire, I'd serve it mixed in with tea or soup cause it don't taste so good served cold. Nothing for it, though. No time to make a fire. Over the lips, past the gums, look out stomach, here it comes." Horin was right: It did taste bad. But he was also right about it working. In a few seconds, Tem's headache was completely gone and the world felt like it was spinning. His fingertips started tingling a bit, and his arms felt like pins-and-needles. He was having trouble focusing, and he couldn't seem to keep himself upright. But his headache was definately gone. Horin Chedcked out Eruantian next. WHen he had finished he said: "Well, aside from a few brusies and scraps, you're doing alright. Take this pouch and put it between your gums and your cheek. Just suck on it untill the flavor's gone. Not as powerfull as the stuff I gave Tem, but it will help with your head, straight and true. While you recover, be a good lad an' keep an eye on Tem, would you Mister Eruantian? When he's not dizzy anymore, make sure he takes some water and something to eat, aye? I'm taking Marcus and Corin and Drek and we'll gonna see if we can't find some Garlic to fight them Vampires with." "I'll stay here and keep watch, just in case." Said Maxwell. "Good luck." And so, Horin went and found Drek, Corin, Marcus, and the others, and told them all about how Vampires are repelled by Garlic, and how he thought there might be some Garlic growing wild in the nearby grasslands. Seeing as how none of them were seriously injured*, Horin went on to say: "Coren and Marcus are gifted with a keen sense of smell, and Prince Drek can use his Ranger training to help me look. If there be Garlic in this place then we'll scout it out, aye lads? The rest of you should meet back with Mister Maxwell, in the grasslands by that big rock. Tem and Eruantian are resting there, nursing their injuries." *(Auriel's captor had apparently been more gentle with her than Eruantian's had, and since Taryn was in her little box, Horin didn't know that she was in distress.) |

Tem never eally liked healers, but he had to admit, Horin was fine at what he did. "Ohh, geez. The world's spinning fast. But at least my headache's gone. Unfortunately, without it, I can't gauge my energy level. How you doing, Eru?" he said, trying to make conversation.<I shall be in baldeziwurlekistan every day this week till 5> |

"I do have good smell don't I?" said Coren proudly. Cats have senses superior to humans in many ways, except daylight sight, though nocturnal vision is better than human nocturnal vision. Their smell is nearly fourteen times that of the average human. |

Eruantian was not about to start taking drugs of any sort; he didn't care how weak they were. He had already had more than his fill the day before, courtesy of the drow. Besides, the problem wasn't so much the bruising as it was that the constant jumping and landing rattled his head around enough to disorient him on level ground. He put Horin's unnecessary remedy in his rat-scented pocket and eased himself up - this time being sure to get his balance. Eruantian didn't care much for being volunteered to take care of a thing he could barely tolerate looking at. "Yeah, sure, fine, whatever" Eruantian responded to Tem's small talk. "I'll go find a canteen. Call if you think you start seeing grigs or such." Eruantian wasn't being particularly nice to Tem, but quite frankly Eruantian had more than one excuse for being irritable at that moment. Eruantian stumbled in the direction of Horin's wagon, thinking of ways he might return a favor to whomever hit him on the back of the head the day before(nothing gory, mind you). |

I bet I'd be safer on my own than going anywhere with them. Just then, the call of nature beckoned. Aurieul made sure she was well out of sight of Prosper before lifting her skirt. Unfortunately, being out of sight of Prosper did not mean nobody could see her. While she was still indisposed she again found herself being abducted. Eruantian, having just removed a canteen from Horin's wagon, was about to take it to Tem. However, Eruantian couldn't help but remember that he had not a thing to eat or drink since the day before, so he popped the cork off the canteen and drank it down completely. He was about to grab the first victual he set his eyes on when he remembered Tem was waiting on water. Eruantian refilled the canteen from one of the water barrels and walked back towards Tem. On the walk to and from the wagon, Eruantian noticed Drek's pet eagle returning to the ranger's arm, Marcus on all fours sniffing the ground, Acedia talking to a sack(which oddly enough seemed to be talking back), and Prosper walking around conversing with the others in his usual sunny disposition. Given his conversation the previous dusk, he felt obligated to check on Aurieul, even despite his anti-social tendencies to avoid conversations; however, he did not see Aurieul anywhere. When Eruantian returned to Tem, he pondered what could possibly have been occurring in Horin's mind when he was ordered to help a squid-headed creature rehydrate itself. Eruantian nearly retched at the very thought of the insertion of a perfectly good canteen into Tem's tentacle-concealed beak; and that wasn't even considering the smell of low tide. Eruantian decided that Tem would be just fine for the few minutes Horin stated and figured tying the straps of the canteen around Tem's arm would suffice to give him the right message when he came to; this, of course, being after he marked it to be distinguishable from the other canteens. Having taken care of Tem(sort of), Eruantian immediately carried out his self-imposed obligation and inquired the others of Aurieul's location. The inquisition lead him to Aurieul and Prosper's location of conversation as well as her direction of movement. Eruantian followed Aurieul's path until he reasoned that Aurieul had no reason to be out as far as he had gone, unless it had been for personal and/or private reasons. He had decided that it would be best to *gulp* go back and watch Tem, but then he heard a ruffling among the trees and bushes in a certain direction, so he decided to follow the sound, assuming it was Aurieul and hoping he wasn't intruding on her privacy. However, as he moved so did the sounds. The ruffling had become more rapid as if it were trying to outrun him, so he ran too. He followed the sound as fast as he possibly could, which was an unwise decision, especially considering he knew neither what he was really following nor how to track. Even if he caught up with it, he would likely have trouble finding his way back. <OOC> I tried to be as vague as possible when describing the actions of the other characters in paragraph two using their assumed actions and state of beings(considering Horin's orders, previous situations, ect...) I hope I did not overstep my boundaries of control.</OOC> |

Suddenly, a thrown rock came flying at Eruantian's face. Eruantian instinctively ducked, but he did it awkwardly, which resulted in him having to stop running to regain his balance. As he was about to continue his pursuit, he felt hands grab at his ankles and jerk his legs out from under him. Then something hit his head with a resounding "Clang!"... and it was lights-out for Eruantian. <GM's Note: Nobody else in the party saw or heard this.> |

He nodded in greeting but did no more, the look on the half-elfs face could've killed a bear foolish enough to cross his path. When at Horrins wagon he found Tem sitting on the ground, with, as far as the boy could tell from the Flayer's non-human face, a pained look. "What happened to you?" Prosper asked. In truth he was no more comfortable around Tem than Eruantian, in part because of his looks and in part because of his ability to see into his head. But it would be best to put differences aside, after all, a mind reader was valuble to the party, and Tem had been trustworthy so far. Who knew? Maybe the 'squiddly-man' would grow on him. |
