Eruantian was clearly at a disadvantage when it came to intel. "By Torm's valor" Eruantian thought to himself "Is there some sort of book written about my ring thing that I haven't read?"

"Well, Mr. Chezzo" he addressed the bird "Let's see if THAT is true." Eruantian held his hand up, though had no idea what he was supposed to do. He decided to just try asking the ring. "Uh, Narluin?" he questioned as if being on a first-name bases with the ring might help "Is he telling the truth about your abilities?"

"Okay. This is it. I'm about to get in fight with some really strange creatures." thought Coren.

"Do not let excitement control you young one." said a voice. It was the voice of Master Roshi. His long dead druid master. "You have many things to learn to liberate our people, and bring back the Balance to our land."

"Listen to him. He is wise you know!" said a warm voice. The voice of Father Amos, a priest he met on his journeys. "Do not ask how we converse with you, but control your instincts. We will be here to guide you.All things will be revealed in time."

"But how do I have control? Where are you?" whisper Coren to the voices, but there was no answer. Coren sat silently. Waiting for his chance to strike, if needed.

<Your guy is with the main group, marching towards where Coren, Marcus and Drek are. In fact, they're just about to catch up with them.>

Captain Sealem saw Drek's signal and barked out: "Company, HALT! Mage, end astral watch. We've got Bugbears up ahead, and I want you to put some fire on them. Literally."

Micheal came back to his body, and Maria put him down. "No can do, commander. Don't have a fireball spell. But I can blow them up real good. How's that sound?"

Captain Sealem said: "No explosions. We can't risk collapsing the cave. How about lightning? Can you zap them one?"

Micheal smiled and said: "Lighting it is, then. Just get me close enough so I can see one."

Sealem nodded: "Right. Company, form a SINGLE LINE! Eyes FRONT! Shields UP! Weapons UP! Forward MARCH!"

Meanwhile, back in the mine shaft:

The ring responded by lighting up green and making a "Bing bing bing" sound. A voice came from it, saying: "Yes." It then returned to it's usual soft blue glow.

The ring answered in the same deep, whispering voice of the fire that Tem spoke to in Eruantian's trance.
"Whoa!" Eruantian exclaimed "It can talk too!" The rate at which Eruantian was learning new powers was quite reassuring to him. "Very well, Chezzo" Eruantian continued "Is Chezzo telling the truth about Aclabar having Aurieul?"

"Bugbears?" Marcus asked as he drew his sword. "What the heck are those? Whatever they are, I'mma get them!"

The Lizzardman charged forward with a reptilian roar...

Auriel had now been removed from her cage. She was unchained, untied, and then picked up by a Bugbear. "Mmmm not much meat. Too thin. Huh. Fatten up first. Master not mind. Taste better more fat. Yum. Humm hu!" It then started saying something in Gobliniod, the gist of which Auriel didn't catch. She was rudely shoved into a holding pen with a goat, two pigs, a pair of rabbits, and a turtle. Then, the bugbear got into an argument with a female bugbear. This quickly degenerated into a brawl, and soon a crowd had formed to watch the fight. In short order, nobody was watching Auriel. Luckily for her, they hadn't searched her very well, and they had missed her lockpicks and her thieves tools... If she could just pick the lock and get out without releasing the farm animals....

Meanwhile, Eruntian was having a conversation with his ring about Chezzo, the talking bird.

The ring again glowed green, pinged three times, and said: "No lie detected. No independent confirmation available, but no deceptive intent apparent either."

CHezzo said: "Yes, yes! See, I'm on your side. Please, use the ring to free Chezzo, then I can help you better! Tell ring to use anti-magic on me and end my slavery. That will make me human again! Please! Have pity on poor Chezzo."

Captain Sealem saw this and said: "So much for tactical planing. ::Sigh:: Ah well... lets give them a hand. COMPANY, CHARGE! YAAAAAAA!!!!!"

Micheal cast his Call Lightning spell and blasted about five Bugbears into tiny fragments of chared flesh and bone, but that still left a whole lot of them to fight. He then got up his Shield Of Wind to protect himself. Farnham, Maxwell, Maria, Captain Sealem, Horin, Quinn, Andrew, Prosper, the three Elven Swordsmen, <and anyone else I'm forgetting> charged forward in a line to assist Marcus. Goldwing dived down to attack as well. Acedia was up in the air, and the thought occured to her that if she timed it right, she could transfor from a bird to a bear and carry the momentum with her as she landed on an enemy.

The Bugbears had tough skin; it was hard for Marcus to make any deep cuts, but fortunately he was fast enough to protect himself very well. Marcus's flail wasn't much help, since the creatures towered over him.

Suddenly Marcus had an idea: Wrestle them down! He leapt onto a Bugbear whose back was turned, climbed up onto his broad shoulders, and tried with all his might to take down the beast. Marcus was strong, but was he strong enough?

Marcus never got a chance to find out, because other bugbears started hacking at him with their weapons: Maces, swords, axes, scithes and spears came pointy-end first towards Marcus, despite the fact that he was on the back of one of their friends. He had just enough time to backflip out of the way...

"I will free you, Chezzo" Eruantian declared "On one condition: if you promise to help me in any way that gets us out of here; and by that I mean the two of us AND Aurieul. You will take me to Aurieul and tell me anything you know about my ring, the mines, and Aclabar. Do we have an accord?"

Marcus's tail twitched, driving his flail into the eye of a Bugbear behind him. The beast fell to the ground in pain, enabling Marcus to escape and fight the other ones. As Marcus landed, the flail came with him, pulling out the Bugbear's eye and optic nerve. Not a pretty sight.

The Lizzardman's scales were extremely tough; the weapons fired at him were only scratches. He wasn't strong enough to kill any of the Bugbears, but he was certainly putting up a good fight and staying alive. If only he knew any Lizzard magic, he could grow even bigger than the monsters and wipe them out.

Andrew seeing that Marcus's attacks had no effect on the bugbears knew this was a good time to use his chi.

He entered the battlefield and was attacked by a bugbear with an axe, slashing downwards, Andrew sidestepped to the left and with a left foot glowing with chi, roundhouse kicked the bugbear in the ribs but the bugbear could take more than that, he horizontally swinged his axe but Jau ducked and with a fist imbued with chi, did an uppercut on the bugbear, knocking him out.

1 down...so many to go...

... and the ring glowed white...it built up power, getting brighter and brighter until Eruantian had to close his eyes because it was too bright to see. When he opened them, a naked young human male was standing there, covering his groin with his hands and smiling sheepishly. "Hi... uh... I'm Chezzo. You wouldn't happen to have a pair of shorts in that backpack of yours, would you?"

<GM's Note: As previously established in this continuity, being shapeshifted usually means you loose your clothing. Chezzo looks to be about 15, with tanned skin and short dark hair.>

<OOC> Since when does Eruantian have a back pack? All of his stuff was eaten by umberhulks.

Eruantian tried to look into the light but couldn't. He thought to himself "Don't see it! Don't see it! Don't see it!..." and when he could finally see he thought to himself "DON'T WANNA SEE IT!"

When asked about clothing in his backpack, Eruantian inquired "Backpack? What backpack?" Eruantian checked his back...

As Eruantian looked around, he noticed that there was a backpack, but not on his back. Crumpled up against the side of the old mining cart was a canvas backpack. However, it was empty.

Meanwhile, the main party had now fully engaged the Bugbears.
Captain Sealem called out: "They're vulnerable at the neck or in the groin. Hack their heads off. Hit them in the nadds! Yaaa!"

For the most part, the Bugbears were slow (and not very graceful) fighters, but they were brutally effective if they managed to connect. Even though the party was outnumbered, their odds steadily improved as one by one the Bugbears fell to the superior skill and courage of the party members.

{ Actually, Acedia doesn't have a bear form. |: The closest form in size would be a panther. Let's try that! }

"Except I don't have a bear form...Perhaps the panther would work." With little more planning, the falcon took off past the battle to build up speed, banked and started a dive, shifting into a considerably large and solidly-built black panther just mere feet from the fray. She tackled one bugbear, dealt a savage slash to the neck, and sprung away again, proceeding in this fashion through the horde of bugbears.

Meanwhile, Acedia had also conveniently dropped Taryn's bag as she shifted. The spectre emerged from her recovery room, rubbed her luminescent eyes, slung the bag over her shoulder and also joined the fight, using the same "stilken" form that she'd used on those bandits in the stable back in Targos. Long, spindly arms with vicious hooks and a giant mouth full of needle teeth - she was hacking off heads with startling efficiency.

"Oh, that's not my backpack" Eruantian responded "However, if we can find a way to cut some leg-holes in it, you can at least cover yourself up with that."

Just then, Eruantian could hear the faint sound of horses and wheels. A chariot? It was far away, but definitely getting closer.
Chezzo heard it too: "Oh, crap. That'd be the Ogre-mage's war chariot. He's coming for us!" Chezzo picked up the backpack and covered his groin with it.

Meanwhile:

Prosper took Captain Sealem's advice and aimed for the groin. He would have aimed for the neck, but he though his spear would be of more use hitting the nadds than the neck.

Marcus found that he, too could use the groin as a target, and started aiming his flail in between the legs of his opponents in as well as chopping off various heads at the neck.

The sudden appearance of Acedia's panther form apparently scared the dim-witted Bugbears. Two of them panicked and ran, while the rest were wavering... a little unsure what to make of the sight of a feline predator falling from the sky. But, this uncertainty didn't last long, as their battle lust and general stupidity overcame their better sense. Acedia fought savagely, and found that a good solid bite to the neck would incapacitate, if not kill, a bugbear in one swoop. Her cat-like reflexes kept her out of the way of most of the blows sent her way, but she took some minor cuts and bruises here and there.

Taryn was decimating her opponents. They didn't stand a chance against her, but they were too stupid to run away.

Maxwell and Farnham were not having such an easy time. Their rapiers were not suited to fighting creatures like this. They held their own, but they couldn't down any of the bugbears.

Captaain Sealem and his elven swordsmen, however, were doing very well. Captain Sealem's movements were precise and his blows always landed where they needed to.

Drek was putting arrow after arrow in bugbear necks, and Coren was fighting with the same kind of feline grace and ferocity that Acedia's panther form was displaying.

Tem was on the Etherial using his psionics to make Bugbear after Bugbear sleepy. Since bugbears have low resistance to psionic attacks, this was easy pickings for Tem. This slowed down the ranks of Bugbears considerably, and as such they couldn't bring their numbers to bear. Otherwise, they would have been able to overpower the party with sheer numbers.

Micheal said: "Aw, hell... Bad news, commander. They're bringing up reinforcements. They're pouring out of an underground passage. I estimate we have less than ten minutes before we're overrun."

Captaian Sealem said: "Now would be a really good time to blow them up, Mage!"

Micheal said: "But you said..."
Captain Sealem cut him off: "Forget what I said. You got a better idea?"
Micehal said: "Not really, no. Alright I'll see if I can collapse their cave-mouth without bringing the whole complex down. Tem! I need your teleporation, NOW! Get me close enough to the other cave entrance so that I can see it with my physical eyes."

<GM's Note: The Bugbear reinforcements are coming from a different mine-shaft entrance than the one Eruantian found, in case that wasn't clear.>

Tem De-Etherealized, and started eating bugbear brain after bugbear brain. He then created two crossbows, and started shooting them off, laughing manaically. "Ahhhahahahah!!! I haven't had this much fun in years! And all without psionics!!" He knocked out one bugbear, and instead of killing him, he simply consumed all its conscious thought, rendering it into a vegetative state, and also recharging his psychic energy, he did that to three more, but then was soundly, and repeatedly, knocked on the back of the head, then another one kicked him.

Marcus thought of an experiement.

He leapt onto the back of one Bugbear, climbed up onto its shoulders, grabbed its head, and started twisting it. With any luck he would rip the monster's head off. Meanwhile, the Lizzard thrashed his flail around, aiming mostly for the base of the neck, while his sword remained on his back--a vulnerable spot for the monster to simply pluck it off.

<GM's Ruling: You're thinking of the Arbalest. That's a late-medieval weapon, not available in this era. In this era, Crossbows are fairly rare, and they're all hand-cranked single-shot affairs. (That is, you have to re-load, re-prime and re-crank the weapon every time you use it, all all thre stpes are carried out manualy.) The Gnomes have made clockwork crossbows that fire multiple bolts off a single wind, but those are custom-made pieces that cost a mint, and they're not very reliable anyways.
In the part of this planet that is an analog to the Asia of Earth, the Chu-ko-nu (or Chinese repeating crossbow) is a well-developed military weapon, but they are completely unknown here in the "western" world.>

Marcus heard a satisfyingly loud "Snap" and the Bugbear he was on went limp. Seems he broke it's neck.

Meanwhile, Chezzo said to Eruantian: "An axe handle? Better than nothing, I guess."

Micheal called to Tem again: "Tem! Hurry up! I need you to teleport me to the other cave entrance or we're gonna be overrun by thousands of Bugbears! Come on, MOVE!"
