"Savvy. Now, once again. Dwarf?" said Tem, creating several large and sharp items too deadly to write, as reading their mere description makes mortal eyes explode.

"What are you talking about" Eruantian inquired, oblivious to the incident on the Ethereal Plane.

"Look at all the tunnels..." said Coren as he marveled at them, then he cupped his paws around his mouth and almost meowed out into them, but he caught himself, he didn't want to disturb any unfriendly beasts that might be in there...

<This looks fun. Thanks for putting my character here Sargent! ;) >

Eruantian, who did not know much about psionics, was very confused. "... Ethereally approach?" he repeated "Alright, I'll pretend I know what that means. When did this happen?"

Acedia had decided to go with Prosper, just for a change of pace. And although she would never admit to it in public, she had the same urge as Coren to shout, howl, or otherwise vocalize into a few of the branching tunnels, to hear the echo. Years and years of intense training* had given her immense abilities of self-control.

Taryn, however, had decided to follow Maxwell et al, because she wasn't quite tired of killing things yet today.

"When you were still on your own, Chezzo was a bird... and I do believe the dwarf was hiding behind the rock. He even said something to you, though I do believe it's another thing with the ring."

"Wait a minute, you saw Jarec" Eruantian inquired as all the pieces came together "So I'm NOT losing my mind."

"Of course you aren't losing your mind" a voice from one of the tunnels spoke. An elderly man with a long, white beard and a staff walked towards Eruantian.

Eruantian knew this man very well. "Murdoch?"

"Aye, young master Eruantian" the old man replied "What a fine predicament we've found ourselves in today, eh?

<OOC> Only Eruantian and Tem can see and hear Murdoch. </OOC>

"Hello, sir... I assume you were part of the adventuring party with Eruantian and... Jarec? Seeing as you probably won't let me turn him into a fine red mist or puddle on the floor, you mind telling me what the craps's going on??" asked Tem. All this stuff with the ring... Tem didn't much care for magical artifacts, due to the fact that he'd never met any talismongers who understood psionics.

Eruantian was shocked. "He can..."

"Yes" Murdoch interrupted "He can see me. Regrettable, though hardly avoidable. You would do well to stop putting your nose(or lack thereof) where it doesn't belong, psion. That point has been made more than once: by the ring, by Jarec, and by the two men you murdered on the Gusty Mountains."

Eruantian remembered that day. "You mean he..."

"Aye, it was him."

"Tem, how could you?!"

Tem looked left. Then right. "Okay, look. As you probably guessed, ghostliness causes insanity. I became a murderous psychopath bent on destruction, but now... I see that some things, [s]though not many,[/s] are more important. After seeing the carnage at Squiddly Man mountain, I lost my love of fighting. You see, after the fight with the Dire wolf, I felt so ashamed that my mage teleported us to the mountain. It was a nightmare. It was almost like it was dead. The people had no psychic aura, While normally a civilization that big would have been a riot of telepathic communication. And when I went ethereal, there were bodies everywhere. On the plane of thought. The strongest of us, the heroes, were mercilessly de-minded." Tem teleported over to marcus to avoid any further confrontation. He had a clear enough idea of Eruantian's ring.

<OOC> I imagine that Eruantian and Tem look rather strange talking to thin air. </OOC>

"About time he took a hint" Murdoch ranted "But let's get back to why I am here."

"That would be good" Eruantian said out of want for an explanation.

"The ring summoned me" Murdoch continued "Just as it summoned the others. We are here to give you counsel."

"Counsel" Eruantian inquisitively repeated "Why would I need counseling?"

"We were meant to guide you in your test" the elder answer "The ring had intended that you rescue Aurieul on your own to see how responsibly you could handle its great power. However, the ring's test has been interrupted, much like the ring's previous test was interrupted." Murdoch made certain that Tem heard that last part. "The ring can no longer test you here. Therefore, it chooses to limit the powers at your disposal for the time being."

Eruantian felt a bit disappointed, but he understood the part about responsibility. The power of his ring had burned down two houses because of his foul ups. One thing didn't make sense, though. "Why didn't the ring just tell me this was a test?

"Results are much more accurate when the subject doesn't know he is being tested" Murdoch answered "If subject responds to the situation as if unobserved, then the answers are honest. Keeping the test a secret was in the ring's best interest. However, the flayer forced the ring's hand, so to speak. You would have discovered that the ring was up to something eventually, so it was best that you got the truth from one of us before distrust became an issue."

"Hey, Marcus! I think I smell something! With my nose! It smells quite odd!" said Tem, also loudly enough for them to hear. "So, seriously, Marcus, I think you'd like my friend Reaver..."

<I think Somm was talking about the guys you killed when you wen't into Eruantian's head, not when you became a psyco. Second, I'd like to know where you guys are.>
Prosper heard footsteps behind him, and looked back. Apperently they had finnished the battle. He let them catch up, then continued forward, letting Sealem, as the ranking officer, take the lead.

<I'll let Sarge decide when we reach Aurieul.>

The Lizzardman took them all on single-handedly, long story short. Claws + (much bigger) muscles + sword + tail flail = One tough Marcus. Thankfully he decided NOT to eat their hearts.

<OOC>Before I start, let me just say that this is not aimed at you alone netzen. I think a few of you have made this mistake at one point or another.

I'm Aurieul. I'm the one you're looking for. It gets a little annoying when I'm constantly confused with Acedia just because she's the only other girl. She's human, I'm a half-elf. She turns into animals, I pick locks. Yes, our names both start with A, but that's about where the similarities end. Please pay attention as it hurts my feelings when it seems like you can't remember who I am. Oh yeah, and it's spelled AURIEUL<OOC>

Sarge wrote:
Aurieul heard some noise coming from the way she had come... the sound of battle, with much yelling and such. The guard she had bonked over the head didn't wake up, and her armor fit Aurieul very nicely.

Aurieul had no way of knowing who was coming up from behind (and had no reason to believe rescue had already arrived as she was traveling much faster than she knew the whole group could - she forgot about the treewalking) so she did the only sensible thing. She started walking faster as quietly as she could.

<OOC>Yeah, what is it with us half-elves and people misspelling our names? </OOC>

"Time is short, Eruantian" Murdoch continued "And you still have a lady to find even if the test is over."

"Very well, professor" the half-elf replied "Now which way did... Aw, confound it all."

Eruantian looked around to find that he had been left behind. He knew the general direction that the party had gone, but he didn't remember who went in which tunnel.

"I don't suppose you can help me find..." Eruantian turned towards Murdoch to find that no one was there. "I do suppose I should have seen that coming."

Eruantian picked a tunnel at random and walked through it.

<OOC: Talking about names, I do think it is a bit wierd that Andrew's name is Andrew, consdering he's a monk...although he is a western monk, maybe if I post his monastery's backstory later it will make him seem a bit more full...>

Was shocked at how well Marcus handled the battle, despite his terrific preformance against the Boss Bugbear earlier and glad this time he avoided cannibalism.

He is like the Grim Reaper with a sword...

After the shock Andrew said "Well I guess we better progress, who knows what Aurieul is going through..."

<GM's note: If we can have a Mage named Micheal, we can have a Western Monk named Andrew. They're both Christian names (St. Micheal being an Archangel and St. Andrew being an Apostle), but It's still possible that these names could be common in-universe without Christianity, since they were both common names in the near-and-middle east from about the 3rd Century BC, well before the events of the New Testament. (Well, sort of... they're both anglicized versions of names; One comes from the Greeks, the other from Hebrew.) One might even imagine that these names had completely different origins than what we might expect from Earth history.>

Marcus found that these Bugbears didn't put up much of a fight compared to the one's he'd fought outside. Aparantly, they hadn't been expecting trouble or something. He also found a pig of some sort roasting over an open fire. It was on a big metal stick suspended by two big "Y" shaped metal prongs, with an apple in it's mouth. It had been gutted (It's stomach and intestines were removed).*
Auriel's scent led to a cage. The lock on the cage wasn't locked, but it had been placed such that it looked locked until one tried to test it. Aparantly, it had been picked. There was nothing in the cage except some farm animals and some straw.

Meanwhile, Prosper was following Captain Sealem. Prosper, being Human, was having a difficult time seeing in the dark, but there was just enough light to see by. Suddenly, he ground rumbled, and Prosper's Amulet glowed brightly. Captain Sealem said: "What was that?" and then the ground shook some more. Then, a steady "Thump ThUmp THUMP !!THUMP!!!" could be heard. It was quickly getting lounder. Captain Sealem said, grimly "Everyone, take cover!" just as something large burst up from the ground below their feet, tossing the party around like bowling pins that had just been hit by a bowling ball. Prosper's Amulet kept him safe, and he didn't even get knocked down, but with all the dust and dirt flying around and the ever-present darkness he couldn't see a thing.

Just as Eruantian was entering a tunnel with Chezzo and Tem, he heard Captain Sealem cry out and a massive explosion echo throughout the mine. And then, something very loud and very inhuman let out a blood-curdling roar that send shivers down the spine of everyone who heard it. What evil stalks the mine? Stay tuned! All will be revealed in the next chapter: Operation Storyteller: Decent Into The Underdark!

++++++++++++END CHAPTER THREE+++++++++++++

<GM's Note: Yep, it's the end of a Chapter and the beginning of a new one. We're going to The Underdark, folks, and we're gonna battle a lot of underdark-ish stuff along the way, like Drow, Duregar, Gelatinous Ooze, Troglodytes, Mole-Men, etc.

+++++++++++++ BEGIN CHAPTER FOUR +++++++++++++++
Captain Sealem awoke with his face in puddle of cold water. He could barley see; even with his Elven vision, it was too dark to see much of anything. He could see that he was laying on a hard, rocky ground, and the place smelled old and musty. He looked around, and he saw the broken body of Serletar, one of his Swordsmen, inches from his left boot. Serletar wasn't moving, and his eyes were close. Sealem tried to stand up, but as he did so he felt a sharp pain in his thigh and a warm liquid oozing down his pants. He knew this feeling from long, battle-hardened, experience: It was the pain of a wound, and he knew that he must bind the wound quickly before he looses too much blood lest he die that way. Reaching for his emergency first aid kit, he found that it was gone... as was his sword... lost in the fall...so he started taking off his chain-mail coat so he could rip off a piece of his undershirt to use to staunch the bleeding.
As he did so, he heard a moaning coming from nearby. "Good", he though; "someone else is alive around here." His fingers were cold, and he knew he must have lost a lot of blood. His head was starting to spin a bit, and he could barley get the Chain-Mail off before he broke out in a cold sweat. His thoughts fell back to the moment just before the floor had caved in. He'd turned to see Prosper's Amulet glowing, and then he fell into a pit while the boy did not. And then... and then... no use, he couldn't remember. He must have blacked out. What had assailed them? Something from below, something terrible. But what of his companions?
Sealem finaly managed to tie a bandage on his wound, and then to crawl over to check on Serletar. He felt for a pulse, and was gladdened at what he found. Serletar was alive, if just barely. His pulse was week, and he had a nasty head wound. He said: "Hang on, Serletar... Hang on, old friend. You are not allowed to die without permission, now, and that's an order. An order, I say... Now, let's see if you've got your first aid kit... ah yes, good. Here we are. One large triangle bandage, one tube of numbing paste, one tin of distilled water, one penknife, one jar of epson salts, and a vial of Master Greson's Special Healing Potion (Pattent Pending). Kit and proper as always, Corporal. Kit and propper... kIt and... Oh, my, the room is spining... that's not good. I'd better get that to stop. I think I'll just lay down a bit..." and with that, Captain Sealem passed out again.

"Okay, I am almost positive something very bad and not human caused that rumble. I am completely sure that that scream was a Mind Flayer's NOT a High Flayer. Ours are more human." said Tem. He dashed off back the way they came, turned around to the other corner, and ran down that hall.<And Somm, do you really think it's a good idea to have a hitler avatar?>

Eruantian took his first few steps into the tunnel when a moment of loud, startling, and disturbing noises stopped him dead in his tracks. To him, it sounded like something large had busted through the earth to maul the party in the most gory way possible, and evidently succeeded. He rushed through the tunnel as fast as his legs could carry him to find out what had happened.

"MREEEEOOOWWWW!!!" Coren yelped in pain as awoke. He was clutching his ear, it had a slit in it and was bleeding profusely. He just can't stand pain. "This is about great. We are underground, and we're being attacked by monsters!" He sat down and started grooming himself tediously. Since cat's are naturally independent creatures he doesn't really think of helping others, but he would if asked.

Thoughts started racing his head as he was grooming. Soon he slowed down and even stopped as memories flooded his mind...

"Son, after the war return and be the king. Your brothers are dead so I'm counting on you." King Felix said with a sigh.
"But I'm a bastard child, how can I rule?" replied a young Coren.
"With this!" and with those words Felix pulled out a beautiful sword, Coren's diamond studded sword. "It was made from the metal of a star crashed to Earth and by a strange, short man during the war that the Persials took control of the kingdom. It will never need sharpening and some say it has powers, though our shaman say the contrary."Just then a guard came in.
"Sire, the walls of the city have been compromised. The Long Claw are advancing onto the castle sir!"
"Take my son into the wilderness. Don't be spotted."

Tears were running down his face, but he brushed them off and went near the others.

Don't worry Dad, I will be king, I promise.

[OOC]I was wondering if there is a way to find treasure here. Coren is ill equipped (only his sword and some tattered pants). He was trained to use a shield and could go on better with a tunic of some sort.[/OOC]

Eruantian heard a monster roar. Whatever it was that had attacked Captain Sealem's group, it was still here. And it didn't sound happy.

Marcus heard it too.

Meanwhile, Coren found himself in a darkened room, littered with rocks and dust. Being cat-like, he had landed mostly on his feet, but some rocks had landed on his head, bloodying his right ear. Other than, he was more or less uninjured. It seems he had escaped the worst of the fall. His friends weren't so lucky.

Coren could see that most of them were alive. However, two of the elven swordsmen were dead, crushed under large boulders. Captain Sealem trying to help the remaining third Elven Swordsmen, he looked injured himself. The rest of the party looked like they had broken bones and concussions, but all of them were still breathing.

Meanwhile, up in the dead-end tunnels, Auriel could see the monster coming for her. It was a Giant Umber-Hulk, and it was destroying the tunnel as it advanced down it because it's body was too big to fit in the tunnel. Auriel immediately tried to hide, but the thing just kept coming. Before she could do anything about it, the Umber-Hulk was upon her. This looks like the end for Auriel.

<GM's Note: Jone's Girl requested a death-scene for Auriel because she doesn't have time to play this game anymore. Becasue this is a PG-rated forum, it's neither gruesome nor morbid. So long, Jone's Girl. If you decide to come back, I can bring Auriel back to life through creative fiction. It was nice playing with you. Please note that the rest of the characters don't know what happened to Auriel. The passageway to where she was is now collapsed, and there's no way to reach where she was anymore. Also note that Coren's vision in the dark is better even than Elven infravision. Coren's eyes are like a cat's, in effect giving him low-light vision without that annoying green tinge or the clumsy headgear.>

Eruantian and Marcus met up in the larger chamber, and from there they could see a lot of dust billowing from where all the noise had been coming from.

Prosper, meanwhile, had had a front-row seat to all the action. First, the ground beneath their feet had given way, then he found himself suspended in mid-air by the power of his amulet. Then a Giant Umber-Hulk had climbed out of the ground, but it didn't attack him. Apparently, his amulet had made him invisible or something. Next, the Giant Umber-Hulk had stared smashing it's way down a corridor, collapsing it behind itself, and then it was gone. There was a lot of dust, and he could barely see, but all of this had been so close that he'd been able to make it out alright.

Prosper was left suspended in mid air, not sure how to get his feet back on solid ground.

{ Stupid school, swooping in and draining any kind of motivation to write like a giant...swooping...motivation-stealing thingy. D: }

Taryn had managed to survive the fall mostly unscathed. She'd landed on her back, but as she lacked vital organs to damage all she really had to deal with was pain caused by the shock of the impact. She was able to get up, but didn't immediately do so out of dizziness. And although she was not aware of it, the spectre had caught fire in midair, and had extinguished on impact, leaving a largish starburst of charred ground beneath her.

Acedia, however, was not so lucky. She, too, had survived, but managed to black out at some point and was just now coming 'round. Immediately after her eyes fluttered open, she wished she were unconscious again. The pain of at least one broken limb came over her like a tide, and she cried out. Once the initial general hurt wore off, she attempted to divine the location of the wound. Acedia discovered that she had apparently landed on her left side, as her left arm was visibly broken, and she was unable to move her left leg at all without shooting pain. It's her hip that's shattered, but she doesn't know that yet. Finally, she guessed that she had a few cracked ribs, as she was having some difficulty breathing. She turned her head and spit out what was very likely blood and maybe some teeth.
