<OOC> Yeah, I wonder what abilities the Hasty Monk and Hand-marked Mage in the next level up, though considering how overpowered Andrew already is he probably shouldn't get much.<.OOC>

And then Aurieul popped out of the sky with the Deluxe Poking StickPatent Pending and poked everyone but Eruantian and the NPCs.

If I actually had more time I'd come back just because you seem to have lost some people. Sadly I only have enough time to stop in and keep up with the story.

On a completely unrelated note, I just realized that not only did I manage to miss my birthday again, but I missed my forumday too. Sadness.

Meanwhile, not far away (or very far away, depending on where you are):

An army was on the march. An army lead by one of the sons of the King of Skarae Brae. It was marching past the town of Targos, on it's way to Squiddy Man Mountain to meet the Drow threat there. Led by Prince Gordon, third in line to the throne, it was mainly composed of professional soldiers from The King's Own Regiment Of Foot ("The Royal Red").

This was the King's own personal regiment, a corps paid from his own coffers and ready at any time to defend the realm. Although numbering only 902 men total, they were all professional full-time soldiers: Well-discipled, well-trained, and all skilled in their particular craft: Together, they were the pride of the nation. 350 Macemen formed the core of this march, backed up by 250 Longbow Archers, 200 Pikemen, and a core of 75 Siege Engineers carrying Shovels, (for digging under enemy walls), Ladders (for getting troops over enemy walls) pulling Catapults (For battering down stone walls) and pushing Battering Rams (for battering down gates). In addition, 25 Supply Clerks and one Chief Clerk were employed to keep the army supplied with food, water, and medicine (such as it was), look after the baggage, maintain the supply lines, and to do all the mundane bureaucratic work that an army of this size inevitably requires. Last but not least the regiment was commanded by a General Of Foot, one Sir William Spence; He was a career officer who was a veteran of the Northlands War and was well-respected by both commoner and nobleman alike.

In addition to The Royal Red, the army was spearheaded by Prince Gordon's own personal corps of 150 Heavy Horse. Not Knights in the strict sense of the word (because they had not been knighted by the king), these men were nevertheless kitted out as though they were Knights: Full suits of Plate Mail, Heavy Plate Barding, Long Lances, Kite Shields and Longswords made them a fearsome sight indeed.

As well as the "Regular-Army" soldiers, this march was augmented by two companies of Lizardmen Mercenaries. These two companies were both outfitted as Light Infantry and were armed with spears or swords of varying lengths and carried round leather shields, but they wore little or no armor. They numbered 468 warriors all told.

As well, a group of some 700 Millitiamen had been levied into service. These were mainly peasants armed with spears and outfitted with little more than leather helms, leather torso armor, and large round wooden shields.

Oh, and somewhere along the way a group of bards had joined the march. They intended to chronicle the events of the army and then sell copies their notes to other bards. A very lucrative endevour, providing they survived the adventure. Meanwhile, they sold their services as drummers and singers.

Eruantian's intelligent ring said: "Analysis of the magics of your Ring Of Teleportation yields the following positive conclusion: It is definately capable of teleporting it's wearer, whatever it's wearer is directly touching, and anything contained within those. This is why User Eruantian's clothes and the other items on your person go with him when he uses that ring to teleport, even if they're in his pockets or in his backpack. Hypothesis: There is a high degree of probability that you were to hold onto another person or persons while teleporting, you could take that person or persons with you. On two previous occasions, some small flying insects had become attached to some items of User Eruantian's clothing prior to an instance of his use of the Ring Of Teleportation. Said insects arrived with him at his destination, with no perceivable ill effects to either the insects or to User Eruantian. Conclusion: User Eruantian, while you have not previously teleported while actually holding a living creature in your hand, the available evidence supports the conclusion that doing so should be safe. The limit of this power is as-yet unknown. Further evidence will serve to clarify the question. Suggestion: Find perhaps a small living mammal or rodent and then attempt to teleport while holding it."

Farnham said: "One of these days I gotta get me, you, and your ring to sit down together for a few weeks. We could make a fortune selling it's information to scholars and mages."

<GM's Note: Becasue the printing press hasn't been invented yet, for most people the only practical means of putting word to paper is to hire scribe. Most people are illiterate, but if you're privileged enough to to know how to write then write it out yourself. Due to the nature of Thamutology, one needs to be literate before one can study to become a Mage. This means that all Mages, without exception, know how to read and write. However, Sorcerers can cast spells without being litterate, which is why Sorcerers are not necessarily considered Mages. Clerics are usually literate enough to be able to read their holy texts, but they're not always trained in writing. However, all magic users can use various spells (both Thamutological and Divine) to write on paper without actually holding a pen, but this usually doesn't lend itself easily to the mass-production of written works. The only person known to mass-produce writing is the Gnomish Master Talismonger Findley Gnbunaulger of Lantan. How he does this is a closely guarded trade secret, but it's likely that his created some sort of magic item that does it for him.
Maxwell and Farnham, due to their privileged mercantile upbringing, are literate in the common language to the point that they can both read and write well enough to function as merchants. Their writing is not at the level of what you would see from a professional scribe, though. While they can both read and write in Common, they only know a smattering of Gnomish, Elvish, Dwarven, Lizzardspeak, and Merman: Enough to read some of that, but not enough to write much in them. They also have specialized knowledge of the various distinctive trademarks and guildmarks involved with the gemsmithing, goldsmithing and silversmithing trades.
Micheal, a product of the Royal Thamutological Academy, is more well educated in regards to languages and literacy than anyone else in the group. The quality of his handwriting is like that of an experienced scribe, and he can read and write contemporary Elvish writing as well as Common. As well, he is the only one in the group that can read Thamutological language at all.
Captain Sealem and Prince Drek are both fully literate in Elvish and pssibly so in Common. Becasue Drek spent a lot of time living as a Ranger in lands predominately inhabited by Humans, when he speaks Common his accent is of the Sakare Brae variety with only a hint of his Suldeneselarian heritage. Captain Sealem, though, has spent most of his life living and working in Suldeneselar, and so when he speaks Common he has a pronounced Suldeneselarian accent. He is, however, fully fluent in the language.
Maria died in ancient times, only to have been recently resurrected. Because of this, she can read Ancient Elvish although she has only rudimentary writing skills: She was trained to be a warrior, not a scribe. Her ability to speak and understand Common is a gift from Tyr that he granted her when she was resurrected. Tyr is a god of Law and Justice, and it would not have been very just of him to bring someone back into the world without the means to understand it or to communicate in it.>

"I agree" Eruantian replied, giggling under his breath "Let's find a small, innocent, helpless animal to be brought to it's possible mutilation." Eruantian would later think back to this moment and assume that this grim humor might have been a result of spending too much time around Taryn.

Drek said: "I'll see if I can find a rodent then. Goldwing snatched a chipmunk earlier, so there's probably lots of those little guys around."
Maria looked askance at Drek: "There are? I don't see any."
Drek said: "Oh, they're hard to spot, for sure. They're fast, small, and they blend in really well... but if you know where to look...." Drek took a little canvas bag out of his backpack and stared poking around under a pile of leaves. Suddenly there was a high-pitched "Sqeek" Drek stood up, holding the bag up. Something small and squeaking was thrashing around in the bag. Drek finished his thought: "... like under a pile of leaves, you can find one. In this case, a Forest Hamster."

"Well, that was fast" Eruantian said as he watched the prince acquire a hamster as if off a merchant's shelf cart. "I'll take that if you don't mind, um, your majesty." Eruantian was embarrassed when he realized that he had never bothered to learn how he was to address Drek. Drek was, after all, an authority figure of the Elves. Eruantian, being Half Elf, was unsure whether or not Elven authority applied to him.

Eruantian was embarrassed when he realized that he had never bothered to learn how he was to address Drek. Drek was, after all, an authority figure of the Elves. Drek chuckled, handed the sack to Eruantian and said: "It's a skill. Catching rodents was one of the first things I learned when I became a Ranger. It's amazing how fast you can learn to find them when there's nothing else around to eat. Oh, and you don't have to call me 'your majesty', my friend. Just Drek will do. I gave up the princely formalities when I went off to become a ranger."
Captain Sealem said: "If I may be so bold, may I say that one cannot escape one's heritage, My Prince. As much as you may wish to live as a commoner, the fact remains that you were born a Prince and you will always be a Prince. There is no changing that. My Lord Emperor has deigned to indulge you in your desire to live as a common ranger, and as his sworn servant I must follow him in this. But, I took a solemn vow to serve, honor and protect the Imperial Family in all things. I would dishonor my vows if I denied your royalty."
Drek said: "You serve my father's house well, good captain. And you keep your vows well, too. I choose to live as a man of the forest, but I do not deny my heritage. I just choose to honor it in a different way than what my father would like. I suppose it is true that I can't stop being a prince, but that doesn't mean I have to trumpet it to everyone I meet. So, I'm not going to tell everyone I meet that I'm a prince, and I don't expect you to either."
The Captain looked Drek straight in the eye (in the time-honored Suldeneselarian tradition) and said: "As you will, My Prince."
Drek said: "It's Drek, Sealem. Just call me Drek. Go on, it's alright."
The Captain seemed uneasy at the prospect of addressing royalty in such a fashion: "By my , I fear The Emperor would not approve."
Drek said: "Would it help if I ordered you, as your prince, to only address me by my name and not my title?"
Captain Sealem nodded sheepishly and said: "On my honor, you know I cannot refuse a direct order from a Prince Of Suldeneselar."
Drek said: "Then if that's what I have to do... fine then, I order you to only address my by my given name, Drek, and not by any of my titles unless I explicitly order you to do otherwise."
Captain Sealem saluted and said: "Aye!"
Drek said: "Saaaay it....."
Captain Sealem said: "Yes, Drek."
Drek turned to Eruantian and said: "It's not easy being a prince."

"It's about to be even less easy being small" Eruantian replied, referring to the hamster. "Um, one matter before I risk altering myself; I wish to know my rightful place. When you look at me, do you see an elf or a human?"

Drek said: "You and I are both the sons of Corellon Larethian. It does not matter that one of your parents did not share that heritage. The humans are fine, noble race and I think of the two races as if they are long-lost cousins or something like that. Perhaps this is why Elves and Humans get along so well."

Captain Sealem said: "Perhaps you were not aware of this, Mister Eruantian, but there are half-elves in Suldeneselar. There's even an Knight I know who's racial heritage is Half-Elf; Sir Burgaf of the Emerald Lance. His mother was a scribe in service to the Human embassy and his father is an Elf, a prominent Marble & Onyx merchant. Sir Burgaf retired to the Enshae Isles a few years ago, but in his prime he was quite the warrior. A more courageous and chivalric knight you may never find."

Maria said: "That is most pleasing to hear. In my time, the humans were not quite as civilized as they are now and, sadly, many Elves held... unfortunate... attitudes towards them back then. Some even considered them to be a lesser race of people. Like the Lizzardmen, or the Orcs. It was a shamefull thing, and Tyr did not consider it to be just at all. My order spoke out against it, but alas, during that time intermarriage between Elves and Humans remained forbidden."

Captain Sealem said: "Oh, but that was millennia ago. In modern times, only Clathian The Mad forbid Humans to wed Elves... and he was completely insane."

Drek said: "Clathian The Mad?"

Captain Sealem said: "Clathian Julistian Nemio Vertrian Malkin, Thirteenth and last emperor of the Malkin dynasty. Madman, nutcase, and all-around idiot. Shortest reign in imperial history: Three days."

Drek said: "Oh, right. The three-day Emperor. I could never remember his name."

Captain Sealem said: "He's not what one would call well-remembered. I don't think there's a single statue of him in the entire Imperial Palace."

Drek said: "Is it true that he tried to fly without magic?"

Captain Sealem said: "Aye. On the third day of his reign he got into an augment with the High Mage, insisting that he didn't need magic to fly. He climbed onto the roof of the High-Mage's Tower, forbade the Mages to cast any spells on him, and jumped off... trying to fly. Thus ended the reign of Clathian The Mad. One of the more messy ends of an Imperial reign, I might add."

Drek said: "I always wondered about that. Some people say the Mages threw him off."

Captain Sealem said: "Anything's possible. It was before my time, of course. The official history says he jumped, but since was such a madman, the mages may well have killed him to save the Empire. We'll never know for certain, I suppose."

Coren said: "I could probably climb over the walls, but I don't think any of you could. Not without a ladder."

Maxwell said: "But shouldn't someone alert that High-Flayer Barbarian war party that they should move against the city now?"

Captain Sealem said: "That would be a smart thing to do now, but we don't know where they are camped. I fear it would take too long searching for them on foot for it to be worth the effort. In any case, any general worth his salt is constantly gathering intelligence about his foe. Let us hope that this 'War Chief" is competent enough to recognize signs of upheaval in his foe's city as an opportune time to lay siege."

Thurendel said: "The High-Flayer Barbarians, eh? I know some druids that dwell among the High-Flayer barbarians. Perhaps through them I may be able to relay your word to this war party you speak of.
