Maxwell responded: "The day is nearly spent, so we shall set out in the morrow. Whatever supplies of provisions you require, you should gather them now and be prepared to journey upon the break of dawn. Also be aware that Drek, you I introduced earlier, is a ranger and is familiar with these woods. I suggest that the two of you should plan to co-ordinate your efforts whilst ye guide us."

"Yessir!" Marcus went to the Market to sell that old helmet he bought in Glenarbor but never used. He got 2 Dinarii and 5 Pennies for it.

Taryn nodded approvingly. "You obviously know what you're doing. A less experienced traveler would have decided to leave tonight. That gives me comfort - I will not be helping a group of foolhardy boys." A small smile. "Drek and I probably know the same route through those woods anyway, which simplifies things quite a bit. There aren't very many from which one may choose, after all."

<GM's Note: The shops in Targos usually close when the sun goes down. The exception is the Targos Inn & Tavern, which is open until the wee hours, or until all it's ale kegs are dry (whichever comes first). There's a book store, an armorer, a bowyer/fletcher, a florist, a green-grocer, a baker, two butchers, and of course the famed Herbalist. There's also a flour miller and a hide tanner, as well as a livery stable.>

<OOC> Well, I guess I'll just go ahead and act on my idea. I thought it over and it would be better to do it now.</OOC>

The young man chose not to confront the Elves. Maybe if it was just one elf that was passing by, he would ask a few questions out of curiosity, but bothering several Elven soldiers on official business was not good idea at all. When the bartender brought him his drink, he started to gulp it down as fast as he could. He would just take his loaf of bread home and get back to work.

As he finished his drink, he heard something ringing outside. It was the town emergency bell, which was only to be used during an enemy attack, a natural disaster, or house fires. As he got up to see what was going on, someone came through the door screaming "Sam, a house is on fire!"
"What? Who's house, Charlie?!" the Barkeeper asked.
"I think it's the Ice delivery man's house" he replied "And there's something strange about the fire!"
Upon hearing this, the Ice Delivery Man rushed out the door yelling, "Oh, please, not again!"

Disregarding the fact that he didn't know what the Ice man meant by "again", the Barkeeper ran after him. The flame had enveloped the entire house at this point. And just as Charlie ponted out, this was not an ordinary fire. This was a blue fire! The Bartender was shocked when he saw this. What surprised him further was that the flame did not make the air around the house warmer, but cooler.
"What sort of sorcery is this?!" exclaimed the Bartender.

Maxwell and Farnham followed the Bartender outside, and seeing the blue flames, stopped dead in their tracks.

As Tem walked over, fully rejuvenated, he also noticed the fire, and everyone gawking at it. "Don't just stand there!!! Do something! Michael, create water! I'll use some ethereal plane water to hold it off!" he created a splash of water, putting out a fraction of the flames. "The water'll vanish soon, so GET SOME WATER!!" he yelled.

In addition to the Tem's ethereal water, a number of villagers were attemtping to douse the flames as well. However, the water had an odd reaction when it came in contact with the blue fire. It became slush instead of steam.

Taryn and Acedia went outside with everyone else. Acedia's reaction was like to that of nearly everyone else - confusion, shock. Taryn, however, was calmer. She'd seen such flames before. Icy flames - useful if one happened to like making frozen fruit juice in minutes flat (only $19.99, call today!), but it wasn't good for very much else besides a parlor trick. Although it did explain the source of the ice. Taryn had wondered the same thing herself earlier that day, as she had been present for the exchange between the bartender and the delivery man. She felt stupid for a moment - it should have been so obvious! She used to know that spell, too. Ah, well - no use crying over spilled milk.

"Dousing the flames with water won't help anything," she muttered. "It'll just create a cold slurry of a mess and the town is likely to flood."

"Oh. Well then." said Tem,"If it's ice it is then the only solution is for it to... BUUUUUURRRRRRNNNNNNN!!!!!!! Er... should I?"

"Burnination..." said Tem.

"Tem is right, for the most part," Taryn said. "However, by using fire against this ice, we run the risk of burning down the whole building. The flames could also easily spread to the rest of the town. And the coming night will do no service to extinguish the frigid blaze. What we need is a large source of very, very high heat that can warm the air to those temperatures quickly. Such as the sun. Would that this had happened a few hours ago, then this icy inferno would not have stood a chance against its heat."

"Idea!" said Tem. He ran took his war talons off. "It may take awhile, but these claws are shiny enough to reflect the sun onto it. maybe the concentrated heat will drive off a small area, but we'll need more shiny. Marcus! use your scales to reflect the sun on there! And everyone else, take these." he made some ethereal Magnifying glasses. "concentrate the sun on the fire." he said

"There is not enough light left for that to work," Taryn said, shaking her head a bit. "If it were late morning, high noon, or early afternoon, then there might be a chance of your plan succeeding. But at the moment the sun is too low. The only reason I don't do anything - which I could, easily - is the fact that the only counter to this sort of fire that I ever learned was physically draining and requires at least three days' recovery. The dire wolf and drow problem is only augmented by the passage of time. Someone go and find that ice delivery man - he ought to know how to counter his own spell."

{ I just kind of assumed it was early evening. :| }

<OOC>Whoops, I picked the wrong day to absent. Let's set a few things straight.</OOC>

BUT IT DIDN'T WORK! Despite whatever magic that must have been used to create or summon the blue flame, there was nothing magical about the flames themselves.

Seeing this strange group of people debating how to put out the fire, and failing at every attempt, the Ice Delivery man saw that he needed to get a few things clear, FAST.

"You have to smother it!" he exclaimed "The fire is put out like any other fire. Cut off its supply of air. Destroy the building if you must, but that fire must die!"

Given the fact that he was willing to sacrifise his house, he seemed quite sincere about his statement.

"Bedtime for the flames!" said Tem, and summoned up a ethereal blanket, but the flames consumed the blanket. "askjfgqwekuyfg" said Tem<Flayer swear, AKA me keyboard mashing.>. "Wait..." he saw a orc with a torch with blue flames running away. "there's the perp! Get him!!" and he ran after him.

Maxwell said: "Alright, everyone grab a torch. If these flames are cold, we need to heat them up. Use the torches to keep the blue flames from burning the other buildings, and mabey even saving that one that's burning."
Farnham reached into his pack and started pulling out his supply of torches. Maxwell did the same.

Captain Sealem's men rushed in from various points in the town where they had been keeping watch. One of them said: "Sir, an orcish warband was just sighted north of the town. About twenty of them, mostly armed with falxs and spears. Movement in the tall grass suggests there's more of them. The town watch has gone on full alert. What are your orders, Sir?" Sealem responded: "We'll worry about those orcs later. Right now, I need everybody to get a torch, light it, and use it to keep this cold flame at bay. If it spreads, there'll be no town left to save. Now move!"

Taryn took a torch, and it pretty much ignited as soon as it touched her hand. And that fire spread up her arm and over half of her torso, but that didn't appear to faze her much. Acedia's torch had to be lit in a more conventional manner, and Acedia's primary concern was also not burning or freezing her skirt. o_o

{ and, um, tem, i think you're the only one who hasn't inferred that the fire started /inside/ the house...

it did, didn't it? o.o -hopeful- }

<Yes, I am. *sigh*> "Is Taryn... a fire diety or something?" said Tem. He grabbed a torch, then made 4 more for his other tentacles and his left hand. he lit them with some low-power pyrokenesis.<he only has low-power> "Okay, we've got to use radiant heat, so crowd as close to the not-fire as possible."

Prosper grabed a torch and followed Captain Sealem, who was directing his men to surround the building as much as possible with their torches.

"NO! NO! YOU'VE GOT IT ALL WRONG!" he screamed at the top of his lungs "Do you not realize how much opposing temperature it would take at this point? What we should be doing is grabbing some axes. If we tear the house down inwardly, we can control the flame more effectively."

What he meant by this was to make a bon fire out of the house fire. If the fire was at near ground level, then it would be easier to keep it in a small location by conventional fire-fighting methods.

"Hooray!" said Tem, and threw some molotov coctails at the fire."TROGDORRRR!! TROGDOORRR!!" he sang, "Trogdor was a man! I mean, he was a dragon-man! Er, maybe he was just a dragon. Um... But he was still TROGDOR!!!! TROGDOR!!!! Burninating the countryside! Burninating the peasants! Burninating all the people! In their thatched-roof COTTAGES!!! THATCHED-ROOF COTTAGES!!And the Trogdor comes in the NIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!!!!! Yes, thank you. Yeah."

As Tem was about to light the first incendiary bomb, the Ice Delevery man snatched it away from him and said
"Are you insane?! You'll just give us two fires instead of one! Listen to me!
DON'T FIGHT THE FIRE WITH ANOTHER FIRE!

Forget about the fact that it is cold! Think of it as an ordinary flame!"

He then proceded to tell everyone to resume normal fire fighting procedures instead of trying to think up ways to counter the cold.
