This game is kind of a cross-breed between Interactive Fiction (also known as Text Adventures or iF) and Forum Role Playing Games (RPGs). It was inspired by some of the other role-playing games we've had on this forum (Operation: Storyteller, Trapped in a Mall, First One Out, etc.) but it works in a different way. Everyone controlls one character--the nameless protagonist of a text adventure. In your post, you describe the action of the character. The next poster describes the computer response to your action and gives his own action.

Example--

First Poster wrote:
COMPUTER:Ye find yeself in yon dungeon. Ye see a FLASK. Obvious Exits are North.

PLAYER:Get Ye Flask.

Second Poster wrote:
COMPUTER:Ye can't get ye flask.

PLAYER: Go North.

Etc. etc. Feel free to be bizarre, but remember, we're all playing the same guy. (Hint: respond to actions of GO NORTH, etc, by describing the room in that direction, or saying "You can't go there", or some event that happens when going that way (like falling off the edge of a cliff or something. When giving player actions, use words that a normal parser would understand--GET, GO, LOOK...) I'll start us of with the obligatory desription of the first room.

DARK ROOM:
As you open the forum window, you find yourself transported to a strange world. You are in a dark room, lit dimly by a LAMP chained to a tiny DESK. On the DESK is a SCROLL. Obvious exits are NORTH and SOUTH.

PLAYER: Get scroll.

COMPUTER: The SCROLL, like the LAMP, is chained to the DESK.

PLAYER: Examine DESK.

COMPUTER: It's quite a simple desk, strangely not having any DRAWERS. It has a LAMP and SCROLL chained onto it. There appears to be a tiny KNOB in the wood on the underside of the desk.

PLAYER: Examine LAMP

COMPUTER: LAMP is quite firmly chained to DESK. The LIGHTBULB is dying a slow and agonizing death, barely putting forth enough light by which ye may see. The dim light illuminates a SCROLL.

PLAYER: Examine SCROLL

COMPUTER: Ye manage to unroll the chained scroll enough to read it, seemingly making the chains useless, since a scroll is only needed for reading. Ye make out--

This desk is rigged with a secret drawer and a defense mechanism. If the secret knobs are pressed in the wrong way, poison will be released into your fingers, killing you. The only way to open the drawer is...

POP! The LIGHTBULB (an odd fixture in a medieval dungeon) has burnt out, leaving thee in complete darkness. Light emanates from the SOUTH, and you think you should leave before you are eaten by a grue. This scroll is useless to you now.

PLAYER: Go south.

COMPUTER: As ye walk south, ye crash into a previously unseen glass WALL. Who puts glass walls in a dungeon, anyways? Past the glass wall ye can see a LIGHT hanging from ye celling. A TABLE is under ye light, holding PLAYING CARDS. On ye ground there lays a small CAT and a DISH. Obvious exits are NORTH.

PLAYER: Examine wall

COMPUTER: Ye look over the glass wall. It it glossy and well-polished. Ye wonder if this dungeon has some sort of janitorial unit. Ye spot a small FRACTURE in the upper-right hand corner of the wall and an ENGRAVING in the bottom-left.

Player: Read ENGRAVING.

COMPUTER: You enter into the pitch dark room. Slowly your eyes adjust to the darkness. You see a faint outline of a burnt out LAMP and SCROLL chained to a DESK. Obvious exits are NORTH and SOUTH.

PLAYER: Smash glass to the south.

COMPUTER: Ye smoosh your hand into a fist and let loose on the glass. The final result is you have a sore and aching hand. Ye swear heartily. If only you had a TOWEL to wrap your hand in to break the window, or some sort of CLUB.

PLAYER: Go back NORTH.

<time out for a second. I'm trying to get a map of this place...when the player enters a room, be sure to name the room.

Code:
---locked door---DEAD END---unlocked door
                    |
             DARK ROOM (START)
                    |
TELEPORTER ROOM-CAT ROOM-BRIGHT CAVE-IMPASSIBLE CLIFF
                               |
                              MAZE
>

COMPUTER: DARK ROOM (START)
You are beginning to grow wary of the dark. Ye dare not go back north.

PLAYER: break glass at fracture.

COMPUTER: The cat is slender and sleek, with orange-yellow fur and black polka-dots. Ye think the cat looks rather foolish. The cat's dish is engraved with the word "SCAMPERS".

PLAYER: Go back NORTH.

COMPUTER: Ye must stay in DARK ROOM (START) until ye can find a new light source, for the room to the north is too dark.

PLAYER: call SCAMPERS

COMPUTER: Ye send a light and lofty call of "SCAMPERS!" down the hall. The cat jumps onto the desk, and through the small hole. Cats can jump high, ye know. He walks up to you and nuzzles up to your leg. Tied to his neck with some WIRE, is a BELL.

PLAYER: Break LAMP.

COMPUTER: The lamp shatters, spreading pieces all over the floor. In the dim light you can't see where they are very well, and you don't want to step on one. You can reach the glass fine, but any other movement and you might injure yourself...Inside the lamp is a tiny HAMMER, like the kind used to ring bells.

PLAYER: hit BELL with HAMMER

There was a simulpost - Mike didn't see Hoemschool's and my post, so he was responding to the "Go North". SO no one ever went into the unlocked door.

COMPUTER: The BELL, when hit, sends out an ear-piercing shriek that brings ye to your knees and causes some blood to fill your ears. Down the hall, you hear the GLASS WALL shatter.

PLAYER: Go SOUTH.

PLAYER: Examine playing cards

(I don't think there is an empty room north of the start, just the dead end)

COMPUTER: It smells of oatmeal and magic. Ye wonder if this Scampers is a werecat. Either way, ye think it would be a bad idea to take it, as the cat is watching you impatiently, ready to flay you to pieces if you touch it.

PLAYER: Examine LIGHT

MANUFACTURED BY THE DWARVES OF DRAGON MT., THE 9TH KINGDOM

It appears to be magic, and will stay lit for a long time. Ye will never hunger for light again!
