Doesn't know diddly squat about Japanese feudal culture. Samurai were the knights of Japan. They wore armor only for combat, but always carried swords as a symbol of their honor. Ninja were just highly trained assassins. Hollywood usually portrayed them wearing black PJ's and masks, but in reality, they usually disguised themselves as ordinary working class citizens (aka, peasants). They usually kept their weapons concealed so as not to identify themselves as dangerous assassins (which would have made it sort of hard to do their jobs). The Kodachi (a long bladed dagger or short sword) was perfect for this. The straight-bladed katanas were another Hollywood creation. |
