Anyone who's ever played Phoenix Wright/Gyakuten Saiban will recognize this.
The rules pretty much follow Phoenix Wright. There are four main players, me (The Judge.), the Prosecution (Whoever wants it.), the Defense (Also whoever wants it.), and the Storyteller (Guess who gets it? Whoever wants it!).
Each of us plays a role. Listen up. This is long.
Me - I'll decide whether something is legitimate (Sustained.) or illegitimate (Overruled.) according to relevancy to the case, how appropriately the suggester has acted so far, what their projected intention is, etc. etc. I also declare whether one person must speak before the other person has a chance. Unless it's really good, that other person cannot speak. I can also adjourn a case, at which point the Storyteller will PM the different lawyers story progressions and things like that.
The Lawyers (Prosecution and Defense.) - These guys get to use the evidence (Reports, clues, objects, etc. etc.) the Storyteller provides them with to support their case. They can call witnesses to the stand, press witnesses ("HOLD IT!"), present evidence ("TAKE THAT!"), and object to their opponent's decision and state a reason why I shouldn't go with the opponent's decision(The infamous "OBJECTION!".). The only things that the Lawyers can use as evidence are things that have been stated, whether in court among posts, or in private PMs.
I'm going to pause right here to explain something about witnesses. Anybody who signs up as a witness might not be used, but the list is still there so one of the Lawyers don't just call someone out of the blue who doesn't even know about this game and/or hasn't visited the forums in a while. The game won't start without the Lawyers and Storyteller, but witnesses can join or leave at any time, although whether they're in the roster or not doesn't change until the "next day"... Lawyers can only call witnesses from the roster, which the Storyteller posts after the court is adjourned for the day. Remember, even if you quit, if you're still called to the stand during that day, you have to stay in. And you can't quit if you've already been called to the stand for that case.
The Storyteller - The most important person, even though they don't actually take part in the actual trial. This person creates the case being tried. When the case starts and as it progresses, they give general evidence either Lawyer can use (Like autopsies and stuff.) in posts, as well as seperate evidence to each Lawyer (Like things they find out during their respective non-case story progressions.) via PM. They also tell the Lawyers what happens during their non-case progressions and presents them with new evidence. Also, when a Witness is called to the stand (And only then!), the Storyteller PMs them the general gist of things that, as a witness, they want the court to believe. After court is adjourned for the day, when the Storyteller posts that both lawyers have been given their progressions and puts up the new witness roster, it will continue again.
The Witnesses - These guys present their stories. After their stories are given to them by the Storyteller, they can tell their stories anyway they want. However, nothing they say is automatically true. The Storyteller may have given them false information on purpose. Regardless of what the Lawyers already know, the Witness must make it at least look like what they're saying is perfectly true. They might not even have to reveal all the information PMed to them all at once. After all, when they're put into the case, they get one PM from the Storyteller, that's it. They should have enough info in that PM to last them the entire case. What they do with it is up to them.
When I think there has been enough info to decide a case, I will rule in favor of either the Prosecution (Guilty.) or the Defense (Innocent.).
Afterwards, the Storyteller posts whether the judgement was correct (Fair Judgement.) or incorrect (Mistrial.). Depending on the outcome, they will post any additional information that might have been missed if it was a Fair Judgement, or what really happened if it was a Mistrial. Then all players (Even me.) retire and new positions are picked.
Okay, we need our main three first, and anybody who wants to be a Witness can also join. The first person to call one of the main three gets it. If you get a position, I suggest you subscribe to this thread and your PM inbox.
