Decompiling a game to make a parody version of it is definitely not illegal.

Actually, it'd probably be copyright infringement (not the act of decompiling, but the act of copying from the decompiled game), but benign enough that I'm sure the TBC and anybody else involved really wouldn't care.

But what about the custom levels? You know that users make.

Actionscript is a programming language; it's not something you "get", it's something you learn. It's part of Flash and as such, to the best of my knowledge, you need Flash to be able to code in it.

How about the one suggested two posts down from the start of the thread?

Yes, I know that, and I have flash 8 pro, but I was wondering if anybody has a decompiler to get me the stinkoman fla file. I know the games mostly xml, but, If I combine the .fla with the Stinkoman Level Editor, *POW* new game...and plus, my website (devonm.com) is a parody of Homestar already, and I've always wanted to make a Stinkoman 20X6 Parody.

C'mon, ANYBODY HAVE A DECOMPILER????!!!!!?????
Dude, that's illegal, OK? If you really want to do it, you'll have to get permission from The Brother Chaps and possible from Jonathan.

I'm sorry about my attitude in my previous post. I was just peeved at something else.

I'm supposing if you gave credit to TBC, it might not be too bad but...I'm not too sure. But does your site have the actual characters or just references?

It uses the real characters, but the site evolves around characters based on my family and me...H*R characters come in once and a while, and, most of the backgrounds are from HomestarRunner.com...check it out to learn more.

I can't say if it's illegal or not. But I'll check it out sometime.

Blah, blah, blah, fair use, blah blah, blah. I haven't checked out the website, but as best I know (not very well, I assure you) there's no explicit legality regarding parody as fair use, and in this case I think the likelihood of TBC caring is low.

Yeah...but, if you go to the site, I specifically say on the legal page that I, in no way, legally own or create any of the Homestar characters, places, etc. And I'm not the only site that's ever done something like this.

You say there are other sites out there that have decompiled homestarrunner games and remade them into their own? Expand on that, please.

Some guys i knew tried to do this years ago with decompiled flashes to make a parody toon called "strong-bad matrix". we were all contacted by TBC to stop as we weren't just parodying them, but parodying the matrix, and it was sort of a complex double-whammy that, if Warner saw it, they might go after them instead of us. We agreed and took it down.

If that's true then making a parody game is illegal. Sorry Devon

I honestly wouldn't worry about any possible legal issues with whatever you plan on using the Stinkoman assets for. There are thousands upon thousands of fangames made for some of the most popular video game series out there, and no legal action has ever been taken on 99.9% of them.

Stinkoman is also a free game, and I'm sure that you're not planning on turning over a profit for your parody version of it. If TBC contacts you about it, you can simply end the project. However, with proper credit and the clear statement that it is a parody, you should be 100% fine.

You could also make your own version of the Stinkoman engine; I doubt that it'd be too hard to whip up with a bit of Actionscript knowledge.

Yeah I agree. Really not a good idea to try and ask for something with questionable legality. I did that when I first came on here and I heard it from everyone.

^ You didn't have to mention all of that. You wouldn't get in trouble for anything related to your website or project.

Okay since I'm currently redesigning my website, I don't have any urge to make a parody game any more. But, if anyone actually has the .fla, and for some weird reason that I don't know of, didn't already post, can you give a link? Because I've also been "drawing" plans (haha, its a play on words! :p) to make a side-scrolling game, that's NOT a Stinkoman parody. I'm not actually sure if this post is relevant here, in that case. But, I just think it'd be a really good springboard for Actionscript and all.
